900 dollars for a new computer

Postby Moonlight » Mon Nov 17, 2008 4:20 pm

Oy whatever happened to 900 dollars being what would be spent for a top of the line computer instead of a mid line. We really liked one there that had everything we wanted but it was 1300 dollars. I wish I could wait a while longer but as soon as we get our taxes we have to get a new one. My computer shuts itself off then says it suffered a serious error. My computer is so messed up the screen saver even freezes up :?

What're you using? Might just save time and money to wipe it and start over

It is a costom made computer from a computer shop. We went to the shop that built it for us and they did tell us we could do a wipe for about 100 dollars. We have thought about it. The memory on this thing is really small compared to todays standards so wiping will only solve one problem. I did not even realize our memory was so small until we were looking at new computers. When my husband was telling me how big the hardrive was I asked if it was larger then ours. He laughed and said it the new one has 60 gigs and ours has 15

You can buy an insanely good system for $600 tops. That includes 4 GB of memory and possibly a quad core. Learn to build your own. Not only do you save money, but it teaches you how to repair it on your own if something goes bad..... And the fact they want to charge you $100 to format the system is hilarious. You can do that yourself for free if you have your Windows CD.

Um. Wow.

$100.00 for a format? That's highway robbery.
$900.00 for a computer? That's also highway robbery.

...and a 60 gig hard drive is considered spacious? 120 (on the low end) to 320 is the norm these days.

I bought a laptop with a dual core processor, 2 gigs of RAM (which is more than adequate to run most of today's programs. Works fine if you're not a gamer.) DVD burner, and a 120 gig hard drive for $598.00 at Wal-Mart.

Seriously, you're getting robbed. Lied to and robbed.

Hell i'd say 160 for the low end. But yeah, 60? That's just not right.

Oy! I guess I will have to look at wal mart. We thought about looking at the Dell site but I have heard of bad costomer service if anything goes wrong.

Terrible customer service. They told customers to open their cases and push the processor's heatsink and fan back in place because it caused the computer to overheat and shut down.

Here's the thing, that's supposed to be done on the assembly line before the customer buys it. That's part of the excessive price you end up paying. The customer should never have to do that unless they want to, or know what they're doing.

Avoid these brands:

Acer (which also includes eMachines, and Gateway.)
Dell

You'll do well to buy one of these brands:

HP (also includes Compaq)
Sony
Toshiba

I'll warn you now, HP has had a slightly spotty track record recently, in terms of repairs and computers failing, but in the end the computers are repaired, and most of the problems came from the Vista operating system, not the computer itself.

Both Best Buy and Circuit City will tell you that HP and Toshiba are among their top sellers.

Oh, one last thing, Toshibas are laptops only. No desktops.

If it were my choice, I'd either buy a Compaq or HP desktop (if that was the type of computer I was buying.)

Thanks

My computer has fan issues too. It kept smelling hot so I checked and sure enough it was hot. One of our fans does not always work so we have to turn it off and back on to get it to work. We were going to replace the fan until we saw that the fan is incased so we cannot get to it. We are also almost out of memory which this thing really loves to tell us about it. So we are going to go computer shopping as soon as we get our taxes. Jack wants this one so he can keep his itunes on it. He wants to get one of those things that can hook more then one computer up to the DSL.
Can you get a new windows disk easily? Our came with whatever version of windows we have. Perhaps Jack will get more time out of this computer if we wipe it for him especially if he turns it off when the fan is not working right.
My husband hates Vista he refuses to get a computer with Vista on it. I do not know if he has dealt with it at work or just heard about it but he says it is the worst operating system.

I'm assuming you mean hard drive space is almost used up. Not memory. If that's the case, it might be itunes and all of the music that is using it up in the first place. And the other device is called a router. I suggest getting the cheap wireless G Netgear with 4 port switch for $30 or so. You can purchase an OEM copy of Windows XP for $80 off of newegg.com
