An observation and question

There is more to Transformers than movies, cartoons, comics and toys. Discuss anything else Transformers here.

Well, I have one friend from high school that has a collection. Thats it though. Hence me starting this thread. When my friends would come over they would all see the collection and discuss. Most of them were into it. They didn't start collecting toys because of it, but it is great conversation at parties at the house. It is pretty cool that when people come over, instead of congregating in the kitchen a large group ends up in front of "the shelf".

You know, that's true. I don't know anyone of either gender either in real life who collects toys. Unless you count my creepy aunt and her Madame Alexander dolls. I don't even know how y'all display yours.

Mine definitely get played with.

Just had a student in the office and while she was waiting for me to find her paper, she blurted, "Wow! I've never seen so many toys!"

Ha. You should see my kitchen table.

My massive collection was the cause of my first break up. It worked out for the best because I met my current girlfriend who shares a love of collecting.

Your not alone dude, besides my brothers (who don't really count) I don't know anyone who collects TF's. If I met someone who did it would be awesome.

SJ21 wrote:I do not know (personally) any female TF collectors. Other than the ladies on here, I have never come in contact with any. If I were meeting a girl for the first time and she told me she collected Tf's, I think I would be confused. I guess guys just expect girls to collect things that are more "cute".

Do you really mean that, or would you be intimidated if her collection would better and bigger than yours? :D

Confused. My sisters were into My little pony and baby dolls. Also, I wouldn't be surprised if *anyones* collection is bigger than mine. I only got back into it when the movie came out. Better, now that is another story.

Ouch. I have to ask, what size collection causes a break-up? Well, I am glad it worked out for you.

I too got back into it when the movie came out...But I've made up pretty well for lost time...My collection is only about 100 pieces but there are some real gems in there...And I get new ones every week...

I have a set of tiered shelves for my TFs but the collection has long since outgrown them so at them moment, they are just everywhere...In front of all the books on my bookshelves, on the TV, really anywhere with a flat surface and a little bit of space...And my movie figures are all packed up and in my closet...Hopefully in the next couple of weeks I'll be buying so new shelving units to tidy the whole thing up...

My colection wasn't too big seeing I stopped during G2, and started again during Energon, but it keeps growing.. Cheetor, Swindle, Hot Shot, Safeguard, U. Starscream, Stealth Lockdown, Sunstreaker, Sideswipe, Waspinator in the last 2 weeks.

That sounds like my old apartment before I moved last August, If you've covered any spare shelf space in the bathroom with Robot Heroes that it is spot on... Yes sad I know, but they were the right size to fit on the top of the vanity.

My collection has completely taken over the IKEA shelf in the living room. When MP Grimlock got here the other day, I had to rearrange the whole shelf. I took all the boxed G1 guys I have and moved them upstairs until I get back to IKEA. My MP's take up one shelf, the Alt/Binaltech guys take up another shelf, movie has a shelf, animated has one, and the the supreme class guys go on the top. Not a huge collection compared to some of the people on here, but some good stuff.

I was just joking on that, but like you I started buying again when the first movie came out. So my collection is likewise very puny. They mainly fill boxes and take up room at the table at the end of my bed. I try not to spend too much on them (trust me even though I only collect decepticons it's still really hard) and usually only a figure once every 2 weeks or so. But if the movie, classics and animated is going to be out at the same time my wallets gonna go on strike.

Well, my family's pretty much oputright against my collecting of these figures. They think it's stupid, silly, and ridiculous that have such a large collection that I continue to expand on.

About the only thing TF-related that they can tolerate is the 2007 movie, and that only a few of them. The rest of them refuse to even give the movie a chance.

Basically, I'm on my own in this conflict. My collecting against all their bashing (whether it's to my face or behind my back).

I got out of the dating scene, but collecting TF's has nothing to do with me not getting into a relatioship. HK knows the story from another thread.

My collection was about 300 strong before the movie. Since the movie, I'd say it's safe to say I've added about 120 more since I bought almost all the movie figures. I have a small walk-in closet and it's filled with TF boxes and 5 plastic storage bins for figures without boxes. 19 years of collecting will do that to you. You'd also be amazed at the number of awestruck people who see my room. It's also really hard trying to explain to people that City Commander was not available for kids. :P

On top of TF collecting I have a love for building and painting models. I started with Gunpla and expanded into Warhammer from there. Now I've started building anime resin figures. I'm glad my mom allows the figures to be displayed outside of my room because my shelfs are full until I get a place of my own which won't be for a while. She likes the figures more than mechs.

I tend to keep my hobbies private, but my closest friends know about them. I have yet to encounter a situation in which I have to introduce a girl to my insane hobbies. I say insane because of all the models I build on top of TFs. Hopefully everything will go well when that day comes.

I'm not and neither are they, so it still wouldn't work.

And if I did say that, they'd comeback with something like, "No, but you're addicted to them like drugs."

I don't really need an excuse or defense or explanation for why I buy these toys...They make me happy and that's all the reason I need...And it's noone else's concern...

I'm gonna find me one of those mythical girls who gets completely turned on by a guy with as many toys in his room as his son (possibly more :P)...I'll club her with my MP Prime and drag her back to my cave by the hair :P

Two possible things could be going on here:

One: you may be in that awful late teens/early 20s period where your parents think they still control you, and justify hassling you about how you spend your money as some way of showing care/concern that you get off on the right financial foot. This too shall pass. Not fun, but if you stick to your guns, erm, toys, and don't do anything dippy like overdraw your account to buy new ones, they'll eventually leave you alone.

Or

Two: deeper issues are afoot and they see your collection as your goad. As in they know they can get you all spun up merely by mentioning your collection, so they can manipulate you by getting you off-balance and feeling vulnerable. In this case, it's not about the toys, it's about pushing your buttons and making you controllable in other areas. Solution to this is simply deadpanning and refusing to rise to the bait. Also not fun.

HK, who knows 'not fun'.
