That was one of the things that really made BM for me. Finding out that Tankor was actually Rhinox was one thing, but when he revealed that he'd become a Vehicon of his own volition... well, that really knocked me for a loop.
The other thing that made BM so great for me was the 'against all odds' aspect. In most of the series, you've either got even sides, or the good guys outnumber the bad, and the bad guys pretty much always lose (Megatron got his tail kicked pretty much on a per-episode basis). That makes the villains seem that much more like losers, and when the good guys win, it... doesn't really mean anything.
In BM, it was pretty much the Maximals vs Cybertron; half a dozen rebels taking on an enormous army. The payoff is that much greater when there's an obstacle worth overcoming.
