Best motorcycle transformer?

Postby DarkEnergon » Wed Jan 18, 2012 11:58 am

Motto: "You can't harm me while Dark Energon flows through my veins!"
Weapon: Dark Saber Sword
So I got my hands on TF Prime Arcee, and also recently RTS Wreck-Gar. I stacked them up next to my other motorcycle transformers to see how they compare - curious to see which is everyone's favorite?

TF Prime Arcee
Kind of small, but a beautiful and realistic bike, and bonus points for being able to "steer" with the front wheel. You end up with a robot that is feminine and clean, and full of personality. Transformation is a fun mix of simplistic and intricate. I love her half-wheel legs and her stable high heels/pointy shoes. I do not like the big windshield sticking up behind her head, and the all-black arms and hands bother me too. Her arm blades are fun and look great, but are kinda too big.

RTS Wreck-Gar
A BIG bike, and full of detail in both bike mode and robot mode. In bike mode you can see his hands, and they can be a pain in transformation to get out of the way. A complicated and innovative transformation, though, even if it does take some effort to get to snap in cleanly from robot mode to bike mode. Very different in style from the other bike-bots - a mix of clean lines and asymmetry and detail, that makes him very fun and worth the effort. The big wheels hanging on the side definitely look clunky, but you got to love how you can unsnap the top one and he can hold it or combine with his axe somehow. And his axe is awesome, and it practically invisibly integrates with his bike mode.

Animated Prowl
Totally opposite end of the spectrum from Wreck-Gar, of course coming from an entirely different aesthetic. Nonetheless, after playing with the other bikes, it's almost shocking how simple (after you figure it out!) and elegant his transformation is, as well as the subsequent robot. His bike is likewise simple but fun. Prowl is plagued by some ball joints that get a lot of work and are prone to getting loose, and his thumbs can break easy, too. But, his built-in shuriken that snap out of his feet/wheels are simply awesome. I like that you can move his handle bars a little, and love how on first glance you wouldn't necessarily pick up on what he transforms into.

Animated Oil Slick
He's got a ram skull on the front of him, what else do we need to know? You have to love Animated sometimes. A totally different kind of motorcycle, a "hog," really. The double-wheels kind of feel like cheating, and the transformation is very basic. Robot-mode, he's a bit taller than the others (surprisingly, little Arcee is taller than Wreck-Gar and on par with Prowl. But, he has barrels that turn into a drinking can (I think :) and an awesome chain-flail. His big wheel-mitts with claws are kind of a turn-off, but still a very original toy, and very very fun.

2007 Scout Elita 1
Almost feel like little Elita 1 is not worth reviewing after playing with the others. She's tiny - and the resulting robot is definitely awkward. My 5-yr-old asked me why she's fat. She's definitely got a fat midsection, and little baby paws and little bitty high-heels. Still, she's very solidly built, and very fun to transform and roll around. And she definitely beats ROTF Elita 1, who I, of course, do not own.

The verdict? For me, despite his defects, Prowl is still the funnest and the most well-done!

Oilslick
RTS Wreck Gar
Prime Arcee ( pink)

I like these three the best because both modes for each figure are fantastic.

Animated Prowl gets honorable mention in my books as well.

My personal favorite is 2007 Movie Deluxe Arcee. Looks awesome in both modes. Feminine, yet tough-looking. Great transformation sequence. Good articulation in bot mode. Cool weapon.

I quite like 07 movie Arcee. Those split tires on the shoulder are annoying sometimes but she is pretty good in general on both modes.

Then RTS Wreck-Gar/Generations Junkheap. Both are nice even though suffer from some QC issues.

Prime Arcee. Actually haven't got a chance to open her yet but she already looked good in the box.

Animated Samurai Prowl really disappointing me.

DOTM HAB Tailpipe is not bad.

Yeah, this mold is Queen.

I'm also a big fan of the Knock Out mold for some reason.. just the smoothness of the transformation and the symmetry of the figure.

I've come to my final decision. RTS Wreck-Gar is the best motorcycle TF.

Great bike mode plus he's designed to be fully interactive with other Junkions, which increases playability. You can get great poses with others riding in bike mode and the the articulation in bot mode is great aswell.

That mold wins it hands down, IMO.

I was having a tough time making a decision between him and Prime Arcee but i don't like her bike mode as much as his.

Plus he's one of my top 10 fave TF characters.

Long term memory loss is a real and ever growing danger.

My favorite is GF Gasket. Akirabike FTW! Followed by movie 1 Arcee and the Wreckgar mold.

G2 Road Pig! Great poseability, neat alt-mode, and he has a light-up laser sword!

Oooh, let's not forget Armada Sideways. Were it not for his lack of knees (curiously, he has well articulated hips and ankles) he'd be perfect!

Indeed. I'd love to see a Generations vesion of that guy. I'll take it without the minicons too.

Yeah. :D I like the gimmick, heck, I even like the heads. But the LEGS sticking outta the top really ruin the look. I know they say it's supposed to be horns, but he's a Transformer, not a deer!!
His normal robot head is pretty sweet anyways, so I can live without the minicons. An update would be nice! Or perhaps a small mod to the original toy to give him knees......

I would say RTS Wreck-Gar, but his fidgety transformation, easily breakable handlebars, and tendency to develop stress marks in his hands keep him from being tops.

For me:

1 ) Animated Oil Slick. There shoulda been an Animated Cy-Kill repaint of him...

2 ) Animated Prowl. One of the very few motorcycle TF's where it takes until the second glance to tell what his alt mode is when he's in robot mode.

3 ) RTS Wreck-Gar and his variants. Combines an excellent robot and alt mode with that all-purpose Nostalgia sauce.

I found Backfire at a local CVS drug store and I'm impressed by this mold. Before this in all honesty United/Generations Wreck-Gar was my only fav moto TF always passing up this mold for Backfire. I think it's well engineered (could use a bit more improvements) and the paint apps are bold. I'm definitely getting Trenchmouth and making Backfire a honorary :CON: !

I only hope when Perfect Effect's upcoming fem-moto's are released that they are impressive in hand as they are in the pics to order them. :VEHI:

Personally I think Wreckgar does it really well. both modes are equally sold.

However my favorite bike TF is going to shock many. But its ot really because the bike is all that good or because its robot mode is great in fact its quite the opposite. It because of the gimmicks. In this case the gimmick made the toy.

Meet Armada Sideways.

Image

What makes it so special?

The minicons. It was the only figure in Armada that had 2 minicons. That were also Headmasters, and that could combine into a convincing humanoid rider.

Image

Image

And yes I admit the execution wasn't great, the concept is awesome. I only wish they'd revisit the concept again at some point.

I thought Gen Wreck Gar is the only motorcycle TF I own, but then looked over and saw DOTM HA Basics Tailpipe. Besides a dubious head sculpt (how entirely unlike Movieverse! :P) and the handlebars on his back poking out of behind the head looking a bit like he's wearing bunny ears, he's great. HA rider is a bit wee for him, but he works pretty well with a GI Joe figure.

Not exactly one of the coolest motorcycles TF's have been made into, but he works pretty well in both modes, robot mode has a ton of articulation and the addition of the targetmater-like minicon adds a bit more play-value.
assembling a Neo-G1/TF:TM cast. Please PM if you have (or know of) the following at a reasonable price: Classics or Henkei Astrotrain, Sunstreaker, Sideswipe, or 3rd Party iGear Ratchet and Ironhide.
Also looking for Universe Repugnus and Overbite, Frostbite and Longhorn and any Webdiver toys.

I just noticed that a lot of the engineering they learned from this mold (like the horizontally-split wheels and folding hands) was applied to later releases like Prime Arcee!

It's a real shame the G1 color release of 2007 Arcee was a Japanese convention exclusive only. I would've bought it in a heartbeat if it came out here. Same with G1 color Animated Prowl!

I agree the Knockout mold is pretty good but the head mold isn't really my thing. It's a fun motorcycle though.

Because he is the very definition of "WhY mY ShOuLdErS hUrT" I still like him though.

I guess my personal favorites are RTS Wreck-Gar and FE Arcee. They both have kibble problems and Wreck-Gar has the handlebar issue, but they're probably the coolest bike formers so far with no major sacrifices to one mode or the other. Wreck-Gar's ability to combine with himself just makes it awesome.
