I am talking about TFs like Optimus Prime, Seaspray, Soundwave, etc.

Most Tfs seem to have mouths, but if the masked ones don't, how then do they consume Energon?

Good question! If we go by the movies, Optimus and Soundwave have mouths, but that's not exactly G1...

Well, I asked that question a long time ago - issue #37 - of OP. The answer I got was "Mona Lisa he ain't." Movie OP has a mouth, I saw him with one in AHM 4 - and yeah, he needs a mask.

All TF with face masks have mouths, just like all TF with visors have optics. It's just protective gear like a human wearing a bandana over their mouth or sunglasses.

The only guy I'm not sure about is Shockwave. He just has one optic, no other facial features and a whole lot of intrigue as to how he talks and drinks his energon.

Also, I'm not sure how Wheeljack's blinking side light things work with his speach. It's funny as the Pit in those Ng/Smoove vids when Prime makes fun of him for it!

I always wondered that about Wheeljack... If they never had faceplates before, we'd probably be asking "Do Transformers need masks over their mouths?". I think it makes them look tougher though. Just imagine that smiling Optimus beating up Megatron and saying (with a cheery voice to go with the blinding facial expression) "You who are without mercy now plead for it"!
