duragrip wrote:How did the G1 Omega Supreme toy sell in the 80's? There had to be a reason Hasbro after giving Omega his own episode, commercial, and bumper that they just tossed him aside like he was nothing. They practically rolled out the red carpet and fan-faire for G1 Omega Supreme. He was their cash cow, their big ticket item. You couldn't find his toy on the shelves, because they were jumping off of them from selling out. What happened?
Omega was cast aside for the same reason that so many other characters, Optimus included, were killed off in the 1986 movie. Back in the 1980's Hasbro saw the characters as nothing more than moneymaking objects. They were not important as people to Hasbro, they existed only as a means to sell toys to make money off of. They killed off Optimus and all those others because there were new toys to sell and the old toys had to be gotten rid of to make room. Omega was just another one of these that didn't matter as a character to Hasbro, because his toy was old, a product of the previous year, no longer relevant. "Out with the old, in with the new" was Hasbro's mindset back then. Moving forward and looking ahead to the future, rather than being stuck in the past with old toys that weren't selling anymore. After all, if a product is no longer selling, then trying to keep on selling it regardless is bad business.

duragrip wrote:Why wasn't he even included in the Japanese continuity? Is it because they would have to pay Toybox every time he appeared onscreen, and royalties thereafter?
Japan never got Omega Supreme's toy. They wouldn't get it until 2008 with the release of Encore Omega Supreme.

Same with Sky Lynx, whom Japan never got until 2008 either.

They also never got Jetfire, Roadbuster, Whirl, Topspin, Twin Twist, the Deluxe Insecticons, several of the Pretenders, or any the Action Masters, back then.

It's your business, not ours.

The sad part is I actually remember him #-o

You see, we had a member once who ab-so-lute-ly adores his Masterpiece Optimus Prime. Va'al quoted him just now.

I think it's time to start a Seibertron meme in the Pictures and Poses thread of people licking various figures.

There's a lot of behind the scenes stuff about the figure licker you guys don't know, immortalising in him in a meme is something the guy does NOT deserve.

There were more nasty stuff?

Back to OS. I have some Hasbro catalogs and saw OS still included with the 1986 Movie line up. In the OP credits, he really had that imposing presence where he stomped on BW and goes on blasting AT on the get go.

On his design, if that was the intent of the original toy designers, OS reminds me of an over sized "astronaut" or scuba diver of sorts. That with the back pack rocket thrusters I'm wonder though why among his decals is a red star. Was he a fictional mech from the USSR?

Another reason as to why I don't really like G1 Omega Supreme (aside from duragrip's constant harping on).

Back in the day the local (and by local I mean the one 100km's away) Toyworld store was closing down and there was up to 50% off Transformers.

So my parents took me, and I really really REALLY wanted Megatron to go with my Optimus Prime. I was told no so I sat in the car and sulked.

They bought me **** Omega Supreme instead. I had to wait nearly 30 years before I could get Megatron (and even then I had to dodge Australian customs).

**** you Omega Supreme, **** you.

Meg's is a lot cheaper toy. Why would they want to spend a lot more money on OS?

You should feel lucky because the G1 Megatron toy is an abomination.

Your face is an abomination.

And at least Megatron has a face, unlike Omega Supreme's, where's his face huh?

Ohhhhhhhh another reason why the G1 Omega Supreme figure is a failure!

G1 Omega Supreme is a very sexy toy. I like holding him in my hand and standing him on my stomach while I'm lying down. And if you look at him from the back and sides, he has knee joints, thighs, and shins.

For a G1 Omega Supreme toy to be great it probably does not need gimmicks or batteries. Mattel is the largest toy manufacturer in the world and all they have is Barbie and Hot Wheels which have no gimmicks or electronics at all.

Mattel isn't the largest toy maker in the world. Maybe if you left the 80's long enough you'd know this. >:oP

Previously, you wanted to install an Ipod interface and now you're okay with no electronics in OS? Then you mention projectile launchers and now it's okay? I hope you are not trying to insert a certain half dressed barbarian action figure toyline again by mentioning Mattel here. OS was basically created by Tomy/ToyBox/Takara/Hasbro. You really ARE pushing BURN's limits with your "barbarian obsession".

I was trying to understand other fans point of view who did not want electronic and mechanical gimmicks.

And I thought of how Mattel only really sells Barbies and Hot Wheels which do absolutely nothing yet through time and memorial, even to this day, they sell like hotcakes.

I still want all those bells and whistles but I'm acknowledging I'm probably in the minority, along with loving G1 Omega Supreme.

Barbie and Hot Wheels don't even have the benefit of a cartoon or comic book, let alone a movie, yet they still sell.

Can someone please explain to me their appeal, over G1 Omega Supreme who has batteries, electronics, a motor, cartoon, comic book, video games, and hopefully a movie?

I just don't get it. I guess you can say, as the sexy Marky Mark Wahlberg said to Edward Norton in "The Italian Job", "You got no imagination."

Simplicity sells as well as complexity, if not more. What also helps is that:

- Barbie is aimed primarily at girls, who represent totally different market and have totally different needs. And Barbie does have associated media, in the shape of CG movies. And every girl loves dolls
- Hot Wheels and similar toys are small, collectible and most importantly, cheap thanks to their simplicity. A big electronic toy with a price tag to match can be a tough sell to parents, especially if they're looking at a dime a day (figuratively speaking). And every boy loves cars
The resident Rewind... well, half of one

- Greenlight, Lancer and PotP Elita-1

It's all about using one's imagination with these toys (sorry if that's a sore point for you) and for some that's all they need. They have no need for fancy gimmicks, as a child's imagination can be limitless and you can do anything you want in your mind.

I will say that certain gimmicks can help start it up and/or add to it, especially if it has fiction backing up, as long as that gimmick does not override the child's mind.
