Great characters with sub-par figures

Postby Duke of Luns » Thu Apr 23, 2015 12:11 pm

You ever been watching your favorite show/reading your favorite comic, finding a character that intrigues you to no end, and then end up wanting figure of said character? Then when you get it, you find you're...underwhelmed. I'll start off with two:

Samurai Prowl:

Image

Image

Animated Prowl was a very cool character. And when I saw they were making one with the armor, I knew that was the version of the character I wanted. And when I got it, I felt it looked cool, but couldn't do much. It has quite good leg articulation, but it's top heavy, hard to balance. The arms have a good range too...that are nerfed by the shoulder pads. And the helmet, at least on mine, never seemed to sit right. Why Hasbro felt the need to have everything connected to the main backback instead of snapping/sliding over the shoulders and head is beyond me.

Beast Wars Inferno:

Image

Image

Inferno was a figure I missed back during Beast Wars initial run, and when I read it shelfwarmed I found that hard to believe. Inferno was a very memorable character, and could be hilarious at times too(Yes my Queen!!!). Then last year I finally got around to acquiring the figure, and...hmph. Yes, I will grant you mine is incomplete, I don't have the silver gun, true missile legs(I found a couple decent stand ins), or an actual antennae(black twist tie works just fine though), it's still not that great to me. The insect mode doesn't stand well, and the front and back legs are just so obviously part of the robot mode. The robot mode itself is very red, not real exciting. Articulation is fine, but the hands are molded in that weightlifter/gorilla style(the first for Transformers?), and the gun looks nothing like the show. Oh, and the gun can only be positioned on the other side of the arm, making for a lame arm cannon. Overall, yeah I kinda see why kids didn't want it.

So those are a couple of my personally opinionated picks, do you have any?

Weapon: Fusion Cannon
Generations Skids.

Such potential, but all those guns make his arms difficult to position properly, and he's hard to balance even with his hips aligned the right way.

To a lesser extent, Generations Windblade. She looks incredible, but her transformation is fiddly and it can be hard to balance her with her sword and sheath attached.

I actually really like windblade, despite the somewhat fiddly transformation, but that's just my opinion.

Yeah, she was my favorite character from the show and she got one of the worst figures ever made.

I's also like to add AoE Galvatron. The figure isn't bad, and I like it. But they could have done so much better with it.

Age of Extinction Lockdown, Felt needed a Leader class or Voyager toy. Giving the movie villain a tiny Deluxe toy was inexcusable.

Dark of the Moon Megatron should have received a Leader class toy not Bumblebee.

Feel HasTak needs to create more Masterpiece Decepticons toys. Far too many Masterpiece Autobots.

Yeah, speaking of doctors...

I'm not sure how else they could have done the figure though, maybe he's too complex for his own good.

The interesting thing about Scalpel, if i can remember my facts correctly, was that he was designed by Yuki from MP fame.
So it had a good engineer behind it, it was just the translation to a completed product that was lacking.
Don't get me wrong though, I still have mine and like him; he just didn't make the process from concept to final product as well as he should have.

G1 Bludgeon. A stinky, stinky brick of a Skeletor-clone toy only made really desirable through his epic comic book appearances.

Yeah I think with Galvy it's more an issue of him being a deluxe, when he should really be more of a voyager...

It's what makes him terrible. It's the broken promise of what could, nay, SHOULD have been the greatest thing ever. And all we got was something that just wants to fall apart.

Universe Galvatron is an awful toy - I really don't think there is any defending it and upscaling it only makes a bigger turd.

Image

The face. A face only a mother could love. He looks like Gimli after hes shaven off his beard and the purple around the eyes gives his head this three-eared Batman look.

He looks ok-ish from the front, but from any angle other than that you get this -

Image

His legs look like they're made in the most clumsy fashion out of Lego and his back virtually has the whole tank hanging off the back. At the current scale its bad enough, but at Voyager? It'd be unacceptable and as the potential 'triple-changer- feature he was going to have - its laughable.

My least favorite Classics-verse figure. Ever.

This is a personal one, Animated Starscream.

Image
Transformers Animated Starscream Gallery

For what is in my opinion among the best animated (pun intended) portrayals of Starscream ever, his toy doesn't look anything like him. Besides the cringy transformation that makes me feel like I'm going to strip his gears any minute, and the relatively undynamic articulation that he has, he also has a huge panel behind his head. Considering that they were going to reuse this mold for alot of repaints, I wished that they had put more effort into making sure he was a little more accurate.
Now this is a problem specific to Starscream and not just the seekers, his colors are totally off. Rather than being a slightly blueish gray with purple, he's a powder blue with red. Not even the Takara release fixed this unfortunately. To summarize, they even taunt you on the box with how inaccurate he is.
