2 words: Format war.

Basically, Toshiba and Sony both attempted to market the "next generation of DVD". So instead of having one successor to DVDs, we have 2.

The problem is that Toshiba and Sony are fighting for their product to be dominant but that hasn't happened just yet. Toshiba is pushing the HDDVD format while Sony is pushing Blu-ray.

As for the physical differences, both can show the same resolution (up to a 1080 res). The Blu-ray discs technically have more memory, but the HDDVD is designed for more interactive features and a generally lower price.

Personally, I support the HD-DVD format, but Blu-ray looks like it might take the win.

IN short, BluRay vs HDDVD is pretty much a replay of the Beta vs VHS battle.

Yeah as the locust said there really isn't much difference between the formats and I would actually like both formats to survive, Blu-ray for storage due to its higher capacity and HD-DVD for films as two fingers up at the greedy movie houses that support Blu-Ray and thus region protect their content to bleed extra money out of other territories(i.e Europe which has the highest prices outside of Japan. WTF does M:I 3 cost €48/$72 on BD-rom and €10/$15 on dvd here), and to prevent you from getting content they don't want to sell you.

The only point of upgrading is if you have a hd tv and as shown below the increase in resolution is immense. Now try and imagine watching a dvd on a 1080p set and a crap cable, I can tell you that its as fuzzy as hell(done using ps2 and composite cable) and makes vhs look HD on an sd tv.

It truly is amazing what HD offers in the way of visuals. When recording my Xbox I have to switch over to S-Video SD from Component HD.

My eyes water at how grainy everything is.

High Definition is definitely the way to go when the prices start coming down some more. But I'm not worrying about it for another 5 years or so. My DVD collection is fine the way it is.

I've only bought two games for my PS3 since launch day, so I pretty much use it as a Blue Ray player. I've noticed that some Blue Ray movies don't look much better than their regular DVDs, while others look amazing.

I have a 1080p HDTV so picture quality isn't an issue. For the extra amount that you have to pay for a Blue Ray disc, it doesn't seem like a lot of effort is being put into the conversion.

Even with prices of each format starting to drop, I would probably still wait and see which one would come out on top.
Once the full potential of a Blue Ray disc is utalized, my opinion is that they will win.

I have both formats at home. I enjoy anything in HD. I feel that the format war has kept prices low, which is great for consumers. The only problem I have with Sony winning the format war is the way they have "fixed" prices in the past over exclusive technology. I love Sony's product, but have never agreed with their business model.

Sony can be a pain in the ass, I was looking at it from a technical aspect. Within last year, player prices have dropped a lot, but the discs seem to hover around the same range. Whoever wins in the end though, some people will be left in the dark. Hell, I even have my Beta and MiniDiscs player still.

Ouch. Sounds like you need to stop being a quick adapter of technology. That's a lot of money wasted on tech that never took off.....Sony UMD....lol

Alot of people have too many regular dvds for them to be doing this. Do regular dvds work in these players? I'm not in a hurry in getting one right away. Especially that my dvd player is working fine so far.

At the time, I didn't have a CD burner, so I bought a Minidisc player. I still use it now, so I have no regrets about buying it. Our Beta was still in use until the early 90s. Again, no regrets. I do own a PSP, but I bought it to play games on it, not to watch movies. If I feel the urge, I can just put any DVD I own onto the card.

Once the games that I bought the PS3 for stop getting pushed back and are released, I'm sure it will get just as much use as my other systems. The fact that the PS3 plays Bluerays was only a bonus, it wasn't a deciding factor in the purchase.

I put a lot of thought into any purchse, I don't just buy them because they are new tech. I am satisfied with what I own, and still use most of it to this day.

Yes. Anything that plays HDDVD or Blu-ray should be able to play DVDs and CDs. Backwards compatibility is part of the marketing campaign to entice people to buy the new systems.
If you don't think backwards compatibility is important, look at the wii, PS3, and Xbox 360.

Don't forget if you play a regular dvd in either of these players it will upconvert the dvd. What I mean is if the dvd puts out 480p it will play it at 720p or 1080i, it really is a difference. I have a Toshiba HD-A30 1080p hd player which plays on a Panasonic TH-50700U and the picture is great. Both on regular dvds and hd.

The only way you can upconvert is through a HDMI connection....this is due to DVD copyright protection, which requires HDCP handshaking.
