Henshin Cyborg Question

Postby joequick » Mon Oct 05, 2009 9:56 pm

I'm not a Henshin collector, but I am a fan of Spectreman, and I recently won the Spectreman and Dr. Gori costumes on eBay. They're from the Henshin 99 line. I also one a figure from the 99 line...

What figures are costumes from the 99 line compatible with? All of them? Just figures from the 99 line? Someone please educate me.

Motto: ""Excessive force is not necessary.""
Ok, I'll take a stab at this, given that i collect these.

I started collecting Cyborgs around 2004.
They've actually been around since 1966, believe it or not, and their initial run lasted through 1974. These guys were the precursor to Microman/Micronauts (which were originally intended to be miniaturized versions of the Cyborgs), which later became Diaclone, which later became yes, Transformers!

Though there are a plethora of figures that came out back in the day, the theme has always remained the same; well articulated large figures with translucent bodies and visible cybernetic bits within. Their enemy, the Walders (or Waruda), featured organic "guts" inside, rather than mech parts, and a shrimp-like alien noggin concealed within the removable head, but used the same basic GI-Joe style body as the Cyborg heroes. This allowed one to clothe either faction in a variety of cloth costumes that were representations of the outfits worn by Japanese superheroes and villains that were popular at the time.

The original figures fell WAYYY out of my budget, but in the 90's, Takara produced two new and improved Cyborg types, The Neo Henshin, and the Cyborg 99.
Neos, which are my personal favorite, are the tallest of the figures, have the most cybernetic bits of all the figures, and come in a variety of colors. They also feature a red led light that illuminates some of the chest details, and come with different hand accessories ranging from the techno to the biomechanical. They also have shoe-shaped feet instead of bare. The Neos have a series of outfits available including a wicked Kicker-like suit called Neo-Tech.

Apart from the Neo-Tech, I do not own any of the other outfits, since I like to display them "naked" in their cybernetic glory. I own all the colors of these except the smoke and clear versions. Worth getting, and addictive.

The 99 figures (and here's where we actually get around to your question) are a fraction shorter than Neos, and have a radically different body shape. You are fortunate to have at least one 99, because they are, in my experience, the hardest to come by due to limited production ( the fans got shafted out of two of the four planned villains due to this ). I own a green, a gunmetal, and two 99 Walders, Magma, and a rare blue General. Notice the shoulders on your figure-the way they look like armor. This is just one of the differences that limit your 99 figure to only 99 compatible costumes. Neo and original will not work properly. Word of warning, be careful and be patient when putting the costumes on the figure. It is a pain in the kiester!

In 2004, Takara re-released figures utilizing the original body mold, as well as a bunch of compatible costumes. Unfortunately, these were rife with factory defects that went from cracking and splitting plastic, loose as hell joints, to as is the case with my Skeleton King Walder reissue, the plastic actually MELTING into goo wherever the vinyl costume parts touched. These I would avoid like the plague if I were you.

There are a few really good Henshin Cyborg sites with photos that you might want to check out. Just google it and they should come up.
Hope that helps! :D
