I've watched the movie a million times and all the G1 episodes and i just can't stop hating Rodimus Prime and i feel the need to rant about it. The guy is always emo or second guessing himself to the point that its amazing the autobots survive from the time Optimus dies, to the time he is resurrected.

I'm not talking comics, because i haven't read thru them and i consider the G1 cartoon series pretty much the main canon.

I love Optimus as much as any other TF fan, but if he finally dies in all the canons, i hope they find a leader that is just as strong if not better. I think they should work towards Optimus mentoring a next generation leader so that the next autobot to become a prime isn't ill-prepared for the task.

I know he tried with Magnus, and sure, Magnus's heart was in the right place, but he truly lacked intelligence - which, is amazing since the Matrix of Leadership is supposed to instill the great knowledge and tactical thinking of all generations of autobot primes into the new leader. It never seemed to effect Magnus, but that of course is due to Hot Rod touching it first.

So Hot Rod/Rodimus gains the intelligence and experience of the matrix and wastes at least 5 minutes of every episode asking himself if his decisions were the right course of action? Come on!

I swear, if Galvatron succeeded in utterly destroying Rodimus, it would be the one of my most fondest memories of G1 Transformers. Other than that, heres to praying that the next leader of the autobots has his act together.

Some would say he had character devolpement,from rookie to mature,but he throws his maturation to the fan when Optimus come back to life,becoming a careless roookie again!


Yeah im no Hot rod/Rodimus Prime fan too.

That's why I see the cartoon as the second canon - the Marvel comics are much better.

Movie Rodimus is all right, what I hate is how they wrote the character in the third/fourth season, and the biggest grief: Paradron Seriously, did the writers of that episode learn anything about autobot philosophy? Blowing up a planet in order to keep it from the Decepticons

I'm gonna hafta read thru the comics then, if its a better story. I think the decision to kill Optimus was a last minute choice before the movie went into production and they were looking for a newer, hip-er, character to take the leadership, but i wonder why they did'nt choose to evolve Bumblebee. But if ya think about it, Bumblebee Prime sounds kinda dumb, so maybe Goldbug Prime? Ironhide might of been another great choice to keep Peter Cullen in the mix, but my vote would have been for Hound.

It wasn't a last minute choice to kill off Optimus or any other character. They started making the movie right after the end of Season 1, which is Devastator is the only gestalt in the movie because none of the others had been seen yet. They killed Optimus and the other characters including the reformatting of Megatron and his troops in order to introduce the new TFs because, as we should all keep in mind, the G1 TF show and movie were instrumental for selling toys. Keep in mind that the reason Optimus kept coming back in Seasons 3 and 4 was due to the high amount of hate mail from adult fans and parents of children demanding that they would bring him back.

As for Hot Rod/Rodimus, it is my belief that he was an interesting character. I don't hate him in the movie and thought he was ok at the end of it, but I do agree with an above poster that there was too many scenes when he would be sulking about how he isn't good enough to lead in Season 3. One or even two episodes with him questioning his leadership would have been fine, but when he does it like 90% of the time in that season it is annoying.

I preferred Rodimus Prime over Optimus.

The final straw for me was 'Dark Awakening'. We have zombie Optimus, and everyone else has the proverbial bad feeling. What does Rodimus do? He practically shoves the Matrix into Optimus' chest, despite the zombie's own protestations against it!

Wasn' t it the matrix that chose hot rod, he tried to help prime she inadvertently was the cause of prime death but whos to say if he did not interfere that megatron would not only have shot prime but killed him and still be able to lead the decepticons to victory.Of course he second guessed himself, he went from hot rod the teen to mr responsible and mature, you would be more confident???
Would you ask a rookie to lead an army??? even if he had the capabilities he would still question himself...it's only logical.

No, I wouldn't ask a rookie to lead an army. Perhaps Hot Rod was the "Chosen One", but then he wasn't ready to be chosen when he was. Again, though, my opinion of Rodimus was that he was fine, until Season 3 used his self-doubt in the episodes so much that they were beating a whining dead horse.
