I don't yet own a mac but most of my friends who work with adobe day in and day out do and swear by it plus now you can duel boot with any version of windows, and it will run really smooth without all the crashes you have reported.

I've been "using" a mac at my university for my photoshop/computer art classes.

I say "using" because after the first 3 weeks. I've decided Macs suck balls, there isn't a noticable difference in abilities for computer art between a mac and a pc anymore. So I've been doing all my art on my pc at home.

Hence why I need a new OS because Vista just got too annoying to bear.

Well like I said if you don't like XP try out 2000. ITs basically XP without all the crap. It doesn't have the pretty interface, instead it looks kinda like windows 98. But its got a lot less overhead, thus it will run faster on older machines. Its very stable, rarely ever crashes, and most things that are compatible with XP will run on 2000.

Ok, First I would like to clear things up. Vista is a huge improvement over XP. Before I get flamed let me explain. The Kernel has been hardened and is now working in a similar fashion to Linux. Unlike XP or previous versions of Windows (Including server 2003 and below) this OS has the ability to use different memory call stacks similar Linux. Second of all, Vista is stage one at removing the old Registry hive. The Registry hive is basically the downfall of all versions of windows. This little thing is what gets bogged down and ends up slowing up our computers. It is that mess of crap where things do not un-install correctly or "keys" are place to alter the way the OS interacts with the hardware. Why would Windows want to keep this? Its a long story, and I'll be glad to explain. Macs for Macs do not have this issue. Macs for PCs have a similar issue but they use a default based driver that interacts with Vid/Mem/Etc. Linux people tend to write their own drivers or compile other people's drivers. Vista's hardened Kernel and the 2008 server kernel is a step to moving away from the registry and a step towards a more stable OS. Trust me, running Vista vs XP is similar to XP vs 95. When Xp first came out people made the same complaints.

Ok, enough of my rambling.
My advice, Virtual machines. Virtual PC, Virtual Box, VMWare, etc. Pick a solution and make a virtual machine within your favorite OS.
For Example, I run vista as my primary OS. I then run VMWare and use MAC through VMWare, Linux (Ubuntu/Fedora/Red Hat), Several XPs. I can basically run a fresh install of an OS with just Photoshop/Game/or Security Audit Tool of my choice.

I don't recall the majority knocking XP after it had been out for 2 years. It was pretty damned stable by that time. Vista however (regardless of what you state) is bug ridden, slow and prone to crashing. How in the Hell can anyone consider that an improvement? It might be the first step in removing the registry, but it's a horrible step that any sane person doesn't support.

I agree with Cornmaster. Windows 2000 (if you can find it) is a damn solid OS.

Well to be honest, When XP was released, the Mac fanbase was still around 5% and the thought of linux was reserved for those who wish to consider themselves elitist or business orientated. Anyone remember Millenium? This was released after 98 and 1 year before SP2 for 98, and I may have to look at my book, but I think also one year before XP. XP in itself was considered revolutionary with its Green start bar and revamped GUI.

Today people are much more tech savy. MAC has gained popularity and notoriety. Linux is actually being sold and people are using it thanks to the development of slicker GUIs for it. Right now it is cool to hate M$ and put down what they are doing. If M$ tried to release a Windows based machine (IE Similar to MAC) they would be brought up again for for fair business practices.

Windows 7 is being rumored to be released 1 year ahead of schedule, but the truth is that its partial purpose of release is to be a Vista Transition.

A few posts earlier somebody mentioned the Mojave Experiment. Part of that experiment proves that people are sheep for the most part. They enjoy the interactions with the new OS but don't fully understand it.

I will be glad to admit that if you use the Aero interface you will experience slow downs, but remove the interface and you run smoother and faster than XP. Not to mention on its own the OS is more secure than XP with SP3. As a domain admin its also easier to apply GP than XP.

It runs just fine on my desktop. I also bought the machine a couple months ago and it had Vista on it. No problems.

Bought a laptop that from my grandparents that had vista installed by default. Kept crashing. My moms laptop doesn't seem to like Vista as well and it too had Vista pre-installed. So basically laptops hate Vista.

My laptop now runs Kubuntu Linux.

If you like Vista, more power to ya. I tried it, I went through all of the paces, and it still failed miserably for me. I couldn't take it's crap anymore, so I got rid of it. I put XP on and my laptop's been running like a dream (for the most part.)

There's the usual maintenance requirements, crappy upgrades *coughSP3cough* but all in all, XP has made me the happiest out of all of the Windows offerings.

Before you go knocking the registry you know there is a solution to that don't you? A little freeware program I use called "RegscrubXP". Goes through and cleans out all the keys that aren't being used, and you usually notice a performance difference afterwards.

Now I big to differ on the Vista Registry getting bogged down. Vista was every bit as fast as XP when I first installed it, and within a couple weeks it got bogged down. In an effort to avoid having to reformat, I tried cleaning up the registry. Sure enough, Vista did get faster after wards. But it didn't fix any of the glitches that were the main reason I took it off.

I think the biggest culprit with Vista getting slower is it's backup/system restore. I found that the Shadow Copy it was creating not only copied my entire HDD, but also did that every time after as well. It never deleted the old versions. I would see my HDD space literally drop 10gb every three days for no reason. By the time I figured it out, I was down to 118 GB on my 250 GB HDD. I went through and had to manually remove the old backups and set it to only create one at a time and not backup more than 10GB at a time. Vista is borked. Period. And by the way, that fancy new "ribbon" in Office 2007 sucks my **** nuts. Oh how I love clicking between 7 different tabs and then finding a pulldown that I think might contain what I'm looking for. I mean, it's soooo much faster than clicking on an icon that is already visible in one of my docked toolbars.

Hate this crap. Figures they would eliminate 2003 support when I actually needed Office.
