Flat out, with the possible exception of Beast Wars, we have never had such character development in the Franchise. Never. It's always been THE WAR and nothing else. I don't want to go back to that.
Did you even Watch Transformers Prime? There's more character development in that whole series than in 13 yeards of bad comics.
I am inclined to agree with Prime being a good example of character development (in some cases, it is not perfect and I am told I am in the minority in this viewpoint). But we cannot forget Animated either. Beast Wars, Animated, IDW, and to a lesser extent, Prime, have been great character based shows. There are reasons they are the things that have stuck around and will continue to stick around: they made us care for them, in ways we didn't know we could.
My favorite Transformers characters come from these series. And it's funny really that Animated was about a revolution more than a war and involved maintenance bots, Beast Wars was also outside a great war and was more a group fighting back in time, and half of IDW has been set after the war ended. 2 and a half out of 4 occurring outside a "Great War" is pretty dang good there.

I have watched Prime. All of it, even Beast Hunters, several times with my kids. Also Animated, RiD, and Rescue bots. All good shows, and I like them very, very much, but they are kids shows. They don't hold a candle to Beast Wars or IDW (of course, this is all my opinion you understand, please don't take personally). Prime comes close, but just didn't really hit heavy enough subjects to really get there.
ZeroWolf wrote:I'm still conflicted on how it will end. You let Unicron win then you leave with a bad taste, especially after 13 years (a year for each prime) but Unicron gets blown up by macguffin/friendship power/whatever then you question why we need a reboot. Most reboots I've read have happen as a result of the ending and with that in mind all I can think of is something akin to transformers cybertron where the destruction of Unicron creates the new universe via temporal shifts.

ZeroWolf wrote:I'm sure the primes will play a part of this. Also im pretty sure they'll probably devise a plan where a crack team will enter Unicron, and proceed to use planet destroying bombs on his brain and other vital areas. Obviously the only being able to go toe to toe with Unicron is primus but I don't know why I the distinct feeling they are doing something different with him.
There exist those who have attempted to stop the destruction of their home world. They have failed. For Unicron devours entire solar systems with numb precision.
He devours moons and planets and stars. Unicron devours life.
And he cannot be stopped.

it was furmans second stab at the "transformers origin story" (though first in the US comic) so he was a full on energy being / god when he took out that previous universe.
in the original UK iteration there was armies of gods of light and darkness, with primus and unicron facing off at the end of that conflict, but that all got jettisoned for the US version which is where he first mentions unicron taking out the universe that came before the marvel G1 one.
basically parring down the story to be "unicron takes out universe, new universe's "sentient core" creates anti body in the form of primus to take him out.
personally i always thought there was a story in what happened to their original bodies which were meant to be much much bigger than planets.
