I'm officially done with Marvel. (Spidey OMD-spoilers)

Postby Roadbuster » Thu Dec 27, 2007 8:28 pm

We all knew OMD was gonna be crap... but this?

http://forum.newsarama.com/showpost.php?p=4913654&postcount=304

BTW that Osborn isn't Norman.

Well most everyone knew what was happening, the identity is secret again, the marriage undone (for the time being at least), MJ is a superhero, Aunt May is alive as a result. This however, took it further beyond the line into past another line beyond the first line.

I think my funds can look forward to be diverted to more TF and GI JOE collecting. I can't pick it back up, not after this crap that raped my favorite superhero of the very things that defined his character.

Sorry to hear that.
I don't know anything about OMD, but I don't buy a lot of newer stuff. I did buy 2 issues of Messiah Complex but honestly it doesn't
seem to be that new of a story so I probably won't buy more,
well, maybe the last chapter.
I did just pick up some gems from the $dollar bin: G.I.JOE:Yearbook #4 and WILDC.A.T.S/X-Men:Golden Age in 3d color. Can't wait to see what that's about.
Don't give up on Spidey though. It's not the end of the world.

:BOT: While I like JMS' run with John Romita Jr., I think this is a crap ending :( It's not really his fault either, it's Joe Quesada's mandate.

Personally I just don't understand how it all works. Does this mean the New Avengers forget about Peter and MJ? (Will Wolverine remember her a la House of M?). What about stories where MJ is important such as the first appearance of Venom. It all started with Venom stalking MJ.

And if the identity is a secret again... that takes away a lot of drama from Civil War.

*Sigh* I love Marvel but this event just boggles me. :CON:

Didn't they swear that after all the crap with the civil war was done, they wouldn't do anything to change things back?

I can't find it now but I remember the big shots saying no specials to re-write everything. Things will stay the way they are now.

Like we can ever trust them. goodbye Marvel. See ya my trust in humanity

They did. They were quite adamant about it too.

But did anyone actually believe them? This is the comics industry after all. No one stays dead, and they're notorious for re-writing history.

Instead, Mephisto offered Peter & MJ a solution: he can save Aunt May in exchange for their marriage. The two reluctantly agreed and their marriage has now been wiped out of Marvel history.

There are some conditions apparently... deep down, a part of Peter's soul knows what has happened. This torture is what Mephisto wanted. Peter and MJ still know each other but it's not clear what happened between the two since it appears their friendship is strained (Peter getting cold feet on the wedding day?). And Harry Osborn is back.

I guess it's good that I'm dropping Amazing Spidey off my pull list. :CON:

So, along with rewriting history, they've pretty much killed off the last 3 years of plotlines to take Spidey back to what he was a decade ago? KEE-RIPES!

Read it, and really don't know what to think.

I don't like it, not one bit. But at the same time i'm hoping that it goes somewhere decent.

But then I have to stop and think, if Straczynski wanted his name removed from the credits, then just what hope is there when even the writer wants no part of the title?

:BOT: I also forgot to mention that in the last page, Peter has his webshooters back.

It was ballsy to go organic (to go along with the movie) a few years back. If Quesada felt they needed to come back... why make the organic change in the first place? And what does this mean with his Other powers (ie the spikes)? :CON:

I'm gonna miss his new powers, I loved the super- spidey sense.
He and MJ will get back together eventually.

I liked this ending, in fact that is the reason that I'll continue reading SM, I'm just scared about Venom, please be OK!

There's no way they'll let anything happen to Venom. As far as Spidey villains go, he's their cash cow. I'm-a check out Wikipedia to see what this new super Spidey sense is.

Where's Doctor Strange when all this is happening? I really haven't been keeping up with comic news. But I really think Strange would get the job done easier, and without screwing over Marvel's credibility.

Spidey went to him after Tony but they failed and couldn't try again without disasterous consequences.

And of course thanks to Joe Q's agenda, Marvel has mucked up Spidey's continuity. If it were me as CEO I would've fired him for even considering most of the crap he's pulled. Yes he helped get Marvel out of the rut but what he did then does not reflect on what he's done now. I think Marvel's execs will see the effects of Joe's mucking around in the comming months and roder a retcon. Harry shouldn't be alive. he died a meaningful death. He saved Peter from Carnage depsite his deteriorating condition and was able to die burying the hatchet.

Many who were considering BND, are now reconsidering with Harry Osborn back in the picture.Joe Q claims all this stuff about the fandom holding the comic back the the marriage being the problem, yet he approves it like he never picked up or read a spidey comic before Clone Saga.

He wrote it like Peter never learned the consequences of GG discovering his identity, yet that was a lesson hard learned. Or what Harry did just before he died, or the lessons Uncle Ben preached to peter about doing the right thing. He turned Peter into a brainless coward all on his personal notion the marriage was the center of everything thatw as wrong with the comic. It wasn't. Spidey became the victim of bad writting, countless attempts to "reinvent" Spidey, movie additions such as Sandman being the real killer of Uncle Ben, unnecessary new powers, and constant "life changing" stories just to get a quick buck at the sacrifice of quality. I know spidey was lagging in the 90's but had they not gone the "over the top" route, which started with Clone Saga, we probably would've had a much better comic.

Spidey would've easily been able to keep his smart-mouthed, clever features even when married because in one life he's Spider-man and in another he's Peter parker.

As a matter of fact, it was one of the best things to happen to him in a long time. MJ took him from this nerdy guy and helped him become an adult many of us grew up with in the past decade Peter had someone waiting for him at home who's shoulder he could lean on, when down, that could handle the pressures of being married to a superhero depsite many lame attempts to sever them.

Anyone want to bet Joe Q won't be at Comic-con this year?

you just summed up almost all my problems with joe q.,spiderman and marvel. that's why i only read ultimate spiderman. it's (usually) just one book, and despite some flaws, it is what spiderman should be. i don't even care about these "huge, life-changing, world shattering, etc..." marvel stories anymore. they are usually just a waste of time and money, and hardly have any real impact on the characters. (when was the last time spidey used his wrist spikes, or his regenerative abilities?) that's definitely one thing DC has on marvel.

it's a load of bull, I had originally sworn off spiderman some time ago despite it being one of my favorite titles (before all this crap), lately they made spidey a whiney emo bitch in half the issues, over the top stry lines, aunt may dying or dead every other week, about the time they had MJ disappear in the plane crash was when i dropped it before.

After civil war I started to get interested again, everyone knew his identity, cops were all after him again, we could actually get through an issue without SP sitting moping about aunt may or mj for once, and he was even starting to come across as witty and like he had a sense of humor again despite the crap hitting the fan.it got interesting again.

Then they pull this crap again, may gets shot and is going to die, again, etc etc, he gets all depressive again, and now they go ahead and invalidate the last decade or so now.

The fun part will be when negative fan reaction forces to perform an even more half-assed retcon where they say Mephisto put spidey in his own pocket universe hell, which is why none of his changes affected any of the other comics.

What's amazing is that Marvel's most exposed, and most reknowned character has essentially accepted a deal with Satan in the Marvel Universe. You can bet there's going to be fallout from parents on this. I truley hope Mr. Q is pulling a hoax on all of us, because people are going to be burning him in effigy at the conventions. It is astonishing though, that all the ire and hatred completely bypassed JMS. Lucky him.

Dont read Spidey comics, but a fan of the guy so I have to ask:

What the hell was May shot with? Stark took shrapnel to the heart and concocted a life saving device. Strange has mystic powers that could easily remove a bullet and heal bleeding. Hell, get Jean Grey to telekinetically lift the thing out or dissolve it if it's a problem! What was she shot with that stopped all of these life saving procedures? Even Reeds should be able to create some form of life support for her.

As for wiping out the marriage, yes I aint read the comics, but retconning out 10 years of issues is a bad move. Any half wit could tell you that. People who died as a result of said marriage would be alive (say Harry kidnapped MJ on the wedding day so he could be with her, big fight, he dies) would change so Harry would be alive as there was no wedding day, so he never tried to kidnap her so there was no fight and no death. This means he could have teamed up with someone else and killed Spidey or made things worse in the city. NOTE: I know this probably didn't happen, but it's just an example. By doing this, any and all character development in the past 10 years is useless. Just throw away those issues, because they are now worthless.

The whole point of Ultimate Spidey was to start afresh, create new storylines that don't have to rely on 40+ years worth of development and past stories. By doing that in the main line, it's an insult to the fans and the writers of Ultimate Spidey.

Now, I'm off to wiki to find out about all of these changes and new super powers.

She was shot by a snipers bullet but Peter didn't confront Tony about it until it was too late. Plus Peter wasn't on good terms with neither Tony nor Reed at the time.

As for wiping out the marriage, yes I aint read the comics, but retconning out 10 years of issues is a bad move. Any half wit could tell you that. Actually Harry didn't die because of the marriage. He died because the Goblin Formula he took was supposed to be more advanced than what Norman had. The ingredients, however were toxic and thus his condition slowly began to deteriorate over time. It was the Goblin Formula that killed him. He was bale to save Peter from Carnage, just before MC and died burrying the hatchet. This was a few years after Pete and MJ tied the knot and if I recall Harry was in attendance and probably the Best Man. Note it's been a long time since I read that issue so my memory is somewhat fuzzy.

The whole point of Ultimate Spidey was to start afresh, create new storylines that don't have to rely on 40+ years worth of development and past stories. By doing that in the main line, it's an insult to the fans and the writers of Ultimate Spidey.

True. And what's unfortunant is that US is one of Marvel's more popular comics. Screwing up ASM the way they did nearly elimanates any need for USM. If Joe didn't want Peter married he should've been content with USM because Peter and MJ won't be getting married in that comic in our lifetime. It's been the better part of a decade and Peter only recently turned 16.

Now, I'm off to wiki to find out about all of these changes and new super powers.

Peter reverted back to hs original spidey powers os anything he got wthin the past 7 years is gone.

If Harry died because of his Goblin Formula, then he should still be dead. And if Parker naturally evolved these extra powers, they should also be still remain. Does this guy not know how to screw up timelines properly? Bagh! I'm getting irrate with him, and I don't even read the books. I'm gonna watch some episodes form the early 90's show, calm me down with Spidery-goodness.
