My best advice is to say that transformers, as fictional characters, typically select alternate forms that most closely match their personalities. After all, as humans, don't we do the same when selecting attire, accessories, and transportation? and transformers are a man- made concept and I'm starting to get way deeper than I need to so, yeah...
mercedees= aristocrat, concerned with outward appearance(mirage, tracks) or BA suave double agent/espionage type (jazz)
fiat= inferiority complex (g1 bumblebee) or hippee/environmentally aware (skids, beachcomber) or scout type (bumblebee)
from a business point of view, which of these types most closely resembles your target market- the audience wants to be able to relate, on some level, to the characters so that they can become involved in the story more and thus improve their experience
