So last night, I went and saw the midnight showing of Indy 4.
And I gotta say, when the end credits rolled(Nothing after the credits FYI).
I was pretty let down.
Past here there be -Spoilers-
The story revolves around Indiana Jones trying to return an alien skull made of crystal back to some place in South America.
Now, I know the myths surrounding the actual Crystal Skulls really well, and whoever wrote the script did get the basic jist of the myths behind them correct.
However, aside from a couple of mentions of the Mitchell-Hedges Skull, which really shouldn't exist, considering that it is carved against the grain of crystal, and still perfectly intact, scientists have even taken electron microscopes to the surface to find out how it was made, and they came back with no clue as to how.
Anyway, the movie deals with the stories of Ancient Astronauts, aliens helping and teaching mankind.
So it should have been a decent movie, with a rich story rooted in mythological fact, perfect for Indiana Jones, right?
Yeah...I feel bad for saying it, because I love Indiana Jones, he got me into studying cultures and stuff when I was a kid.
This movie really was a huge disappointment.
Kinda like TMNT 3, or Pirates of the Caribbean 3.
They used all of the same jokes associated with Indy, the snakes, the "I got a bad feeling about this," aside from one or two jokes, there wasn't much in the way or originality added into this installment.
Then theres the same way Lucas @#$%ed up Episode 1, by adding in cutesy bullshit that really seemed out of place in this movie.
After getting launched on a rocket-car, Indy passes a family of Gophers/Prairie Dogs, who watch him race past. Ok, not so bad for a one off thing.
Then after surviving a nuclear explosion, his refrigerator lands in front of another prairie dog, who looks at him and then scampers off into a hole.
Maybe it's that the CGI looked really really crappy for it to ruin the whole thing of Lucas saying "Look, I made it for kids! GIVE ME MONEY!!!!!"
Then there is Mutt, who during a jungle chase scene gets caught on a vine, he sees a monkey who shares the same hair as he does. In about 2 seconds the other monkeys starting leading him towards the chase again, he gets there by going Tarzan along with the monkeys, swinging from vine to vine to get back.
Then upon retuning the monkeys attack the Russians.
While comical, it did lead Indy in a new direction from "Ok yeah, swinging from a whip, that could actually work" to "WTF, how could he do that so damned quickly, and does having the same hair actually mean monkeys will help you?" type of fake.
Then theres the effects themselves, I have no idea if they actually shot in different locations, if they did, Lucas picked some crappy locations, as every set(aside from the University set, which I think is the only actual on location set they shot on) was pretty much some foliage, then green screen.
It's like they took a couple steps backwards in modern computer effects, the backgrounds looked fake as hell, and not in the good way, more along the lines of the Speed Racer "makes me wanna vomit it looks so stupidly fake."
The biggest gripe I have with the movie, they actually showed the alien, full blown cgi alien, and a ship. Instead of hinting to something supernatural or paranormal in the other films(yeah we saw faces melt, but we were never told what actually the Ark was, what was in there to cause it), but in this they showed the whole alien and the ship he and the 12 others came in on, they showed the whole shebang, kinda ruined the whole thing.
I didn't go into it all, as I need to head off to my morning class, but, yeah, it was worth seeing, because it was Indy. But it did feel like the worst of the 4 films, the very worst. I kinda wish I had waited for it to come out on DVD and rented it.
