Moive numbers (earnings...)

Postby Kalon » Tue Jul 17, 2007 2:32 pm

Here is some facts...

TF's opening weekend... $70,502,384
TF's second wekend... 37,027,901

That's an (approximate) 48% drop.

Domestic total of Transformers... $224,009,583
Domestic total of Harry Potter... $139,715,157

Harry Potter made that in only 5 days.
Transformers has been out for 13 days.

Not hard to see who smoked who.

If you really break the #'s down and look at how the Potter movies have typically played out, you will see that in the end, Transformers will have had made more the Potter domestically. Potter burned thru most of the fan base within the 5 day run. Transfomers on the other hand had the odd format of opening on a Tuesday and the fact that the 4th of July is typically a very light movie going day. Spiderman 3 and Pirates saw over 50% drops going into their second weekend (not even at 2 full weeks. Transformers was showing below 50% drop (48%) at the 2 week mark. This shows that people are seeing the movie multiple times. Actual exit polls have showed that 89 to 91% of moviegoers would defintley recommend Transfomers. Transformers sat at 133 million on day 5...only 6 mil behind where Potter was at on their day 5 which was 139 mil. Great #'s for Transfomers since it is not a sequel like Potter who has an enourmous built in fan base. Transformers has a great fanbase, but has done its #'s also by word of mouth. Only the 1st Potter movie surpassed 300 million. At the end of the day, Transformers is pacing at bout 305-310 million and Potter is pacing at about 285-295 million range. Potter has a huge fanbase, but at the end of the day, people who are not into Potter will not start to go now. Transformers doesn't have that issue. Keep in mind too that Potter has done its damage oversees while Transformers has not even opened in a lot of countries including the 2 biggest money making avenues for it...UK and Japan. In China, it is already on pace to easily become the highest grossing non chinese film of all time. Transfomers in the end will trump Potter domestically and maybe even domestic and foreign combined. :P

p.s. Transformers was shown on 4011 screens in the 1st week, vice Potter which was shown on 4181 screens the 1st 2 days then 4285 screens for the next 3 days. If you subtract the money Potter made off the extra screens it made, then compare, you will see that Transformers actually did better numbers then Potter......you have now been properly served....now go away :-P

Lets wait until next monday when Harry Potter is at week number 2 and then you can do an accurate basis on same number of days and profit numbers.

We know you like to hold onto whatever little hope you can that the movie will fail or not be profitable but the time has come to accept the fact that it is and will be profitable whether you like it or not.

yes its true they are numbers but either way your going to look at it transformers is beating harry potter not the other way around that i heard in some message boards, and some news channels so tformers has had a drop in the percantage of tickes being sold but numbers dont lie they still number one in making money so far when compard to harry potter thats all im saying.

when everyone else is stating that harry potter is selling more tickets than tformers they should look at the numbers not the popualrity of the film thats the point im working to understand here

How can you not like the movie?

Bay & Spielberg must be pissing their pants to find a movie based on a franchise majority of people thought before it was released to flop, was actually turning out to be something very profitable and something cool movie-goers actually look forward to.

Holding onto more than 50% of the audience is a great number for basically any wide release movie.

I wish I could make 250 million dollars and be called a failure.

Like I said, wait until next week and see if Harry Potter drops off as much and then we will see where tranformers stands with the 13 day totals compared to harry potters 13 day totals.

Just a quick tip, next time you want possibly be taken seriously with your views on the movie and the amount it has earned in relation to Harry Potter you should at least spell check yourself. It leads to a little bit more credibility.

Transformers dropped 49%. This is true. But, here's a little perspective:

Spiderman 3 - 61.5% drop
Pirates 3 - 61.5% drop
Shrek 3 - 56.4% drop
Fantastic Four 2 - 65.5% drop
300 - 53.6% drop

So the 49% drop is pretty good, and in fact is closer to that of Spidey 2, which came in at 48.7%. So, the numbers you've quoted are, by the sci-fi/fantasy genre, quite good. This is why it's important to know the context of the data.

And honestly, no one in the industry or who knew a lot about it expected Transformers to beat Harry Potter out on its opening weekend, just as Harry Potter couldn't have been expected to beat out Transformers if it came out a week later.

Sorry, you're not going to be able to spin these numbers to validate your hatred of the movie.

Why would he need to do that? He hates the movie. He, because he hates the movie, thinks , based on his opinion the movie tanked. That's all that matters. He's right, we're stupid. End of story.

Transformers as been out longer so yes it has made more money, but as of right now potter is on a faster track to overtake transformers in total box office. Lets see where it all stands after next weekend and potter has 2 weeks under its belt and compare it to the 2 week total for tformers.

Haha, that probably going to get you a pm, but I think its worth it.

I love it when people start these threads with "facts" and when they get shot down the poster decides not to post in it anymore. Or at least until they conjure up new "facts" to try to back up their point.

Weapon: Switch Blade Tail
Kalon...you're not looking at this in a reasonable manner.

1.) Harry Potter has a bigger fan base than TFs at the current time, so of course HP will make more money (at least in the beginning.) If they were to make this movie during the TF heyday back in the '80s...Harry Potter wouldn't have even come close to the TF success. So, for a 20+ year old property to hold it's own and be this much of a success after all these years already shows you're wrong.

2.) Yeah, HP made the same amount of money in one week, what it took TF to make in two. Problem is, they're still running neck and neck. Just because TF took a nearly 50% dive in the box office, doesn't mean it's any less of a MASSIVE, worldwide hit.

3.) TF beat movie records left and right, including your precious Harry Potter. (That's right, it beat the first one, along with Spider-Man, Pirates Of The Caribbean, and Terminator 2: Judgment Day.)

No matter how you spin it, no matter how delusional you become, the movie is a success. A groundbreaking, insane success. It might not beat this Potter movie in terms of total box office, but it sure will give it a hell of a run for it's money. And in the end, it might even sit neck and neck with Potter.

Oh and one other thing...TF has broken another record: It smashed the crap out of China's box office, and is the biggest American film release there, so far this year.

It still hasn't opened in the UK or Japan. There's still plenty of time for it to make a large amount of money.

For you to say it will be anything less than a success is pure insanity. Though we know you're not insane, (at least not in this, I should say) no, you're just a negative straggler hanging onto hope that time will somehow reverse itself and the movie would've been prevented from being made.

Tough luck.

anyone reading this, just look at my 1st post in this string. Looking at box office info is a mini hobby of mine. All the info in my 1st post is pretty spot on. This guy obviously does not like Transformers for whatever reason. The numbers I spelled out in my 1st post don't lie. Transformers did a bit better thru the 1st 5 days if you really break both down.

End result

domestic
Transformers 305 to 310 million
Potter 285 to 290 million

END OF STORY

The story doesn't end there. This movie will get beat by Potter, thankfully. Potter has a more diverse audience than TF. TF has polarized people There are those that love it(and yes, I don't see how you could) and there are those that hate it. There is little to no middle ground. Potter however doesn't. I'd at least pay to see Potter, TF would have to pay me to see it, and even then I'd walk out. Bay had a simple formula to follow with TF, one that has worked for over 20 years. He couldn't do that. Just on a technical side this movie has issues:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0418279/goofs

I love it when people start these threads with "facts" and when they get shot down the poster decides not to post in it anymore. Or at least until they conjure up new "facts" to try to back up their point.

This is why no one respects the haters. Their hate blinds them to even basic logic.

TF's drop off has been as good as Spiderman 2. That is an EXCELLENT result.

Well perhaps you should open your eyes and try to read those posts from people who actually discussed the good AND the bad? ;;)

And yet you keep coming back to the one sub-forum to bitch about a movie you obviously don't like. Do you expect your constant harping on about how much you disliked the movie to change anything?

Most people would just walk away and stay away ....
