Would you like to cite a source? A meteor is the main and accepted theory, but unless you have actual evidence of it, an impact site, a piece of the meteor in question, or time travel, there's no real way to know.

They believe the K-T extinction was from a meteor. Based on the iridium deposits around the crater of Chicxulub in Mexico. The crater is of the right size, as well as the availability of shocked mineral grains and melt spherules around the area. It's hard to study now, since half the crater is now submerged.

Here's an article about this subject that just came out today (a short one): Apparently time travel into the future is possible (as we think, anyway), but it's the fast-forward-time type of travel rather than the skip-over-time type of travel.

The article cites Stephen Hawking's quotes, who is probably the leading guy in postulating about time travel.

well, the problem with backwards timetravel is of course paradoxes.

but there is another problem, which most people leave out: Universal feedback (UF). UF is when, just like you could go backwards in time, so can the tiny particles around you. which, of course would mean that you would have a bunch of particles going back to a certain time, say 1889. and all those extra particles from 1889 would just keep funneling through your wormhole until you had an infinite amount of particles in 1889. which, of course, would mean an infinite amount of particles in 2010, and so on.

another problem with the "moving faster than the speed of light" theory is just that: moving at the speed of light would slow down the perceived time of the people in the craft, but not by a noticeable difference (cutting the time difference by about half, i.e. 24 hours would only be 12.)

Wheelimus, that show sounds cool. Never even heard of it until now, or UF. Is it new? I'll try to look for it, but I might have to wait for DVD/Blu-Ray and then rent it. Definitely worth checking out, though. Thanks for the heads-up.

Wheelimus Prime wrote:another problem with the "moving faster than the speed of light" theory is just that: moving at the speed of light would slow down the perceived time of the people in the craft, but not by a noticeable difference (cutting the time difference by about half, i.e. 24 hours would only be 12.)

When you say "perceived time," what exactly do you mean? The people inside the crate won't perceive any time change. "Crate people" would see "outsiders" moving super fast and "outsiders" would see the "crate people" moving super slow. But each observer will see him- or herself moving at a normal speed. But cutting down the flow of time by half *is* noticeable. You're telling me you wouldn't notice the crate people moving at half speed? (Assuming you could see someone while they're moving so fast... I know that's impossible, but....)

Anyway, moving at the speed of light wouldn't just slow down time. Time would freeze. To slow down time by half, you'd need to move at 161325.3 miles per second, which is almost 87% the speed of light. There's a formula Einstein developed when he developed Relativity: X = t divided by the square root of (1 minus [v squared over c squared]). t is the passage of time measured between two ticks on a clock by a stationary observer. X is the passage of time measured between two ticks on a clock by the guy who is moving. v is your velocity and c is the speed of light. These two can be in terms of any measurement system, but you have to use the same measurement system for both. So if v is in km/h, so must c.

So take 180,000 miles per second as v, which is almost 97% the speed of light (I know this will be tough to represent with pure text, but...):

X = t / the square root of (1 - [180,000 miles per second squared / 186,000 miles per second square]).

X = t / the square root of (1 - 32,400,000,000 / 34,596,000,000).

X = t / the square root of (1 - 0.9365244536940686)

X = t / the square root of 0.0634755463059314

X = t / 0.251943537932472878

And if we've used miles per second for v and c, we'll use seconds for t, so let's say 1 second. (Really, you could use any measuring system for t since we're only looking for a multiple, but let's go with seconds).

X = 1 / 0.251943537932472878

X = 3.969143277919

So at 180,000 miles per second, you'll be experiencing 1 second per your 1 second, while everyone on Earth will be experiencing almost 4 seconds per your 1 second. (I had to approximate the number at some points, so the actual number might be a little off). Or 4 hours to your 1 hour or 4 years to your 1 year.

If you look at going the speed of light:

X = t / the square root of (1 - [186,000 miles per second squared / 186,000 miles per second square]).

X = t / the square root of (1 - [34,596,000,000 / 34,596,000,000])

X = t / the square root of (1 - 1)

X = t / the square root of 0

X = t / 0

And we can't divide by 0, so therefore X becomes infinity: time freezes.

My thoughts where if you were to go into the future it would be impossible to return to "your" time. Once you left "your" world/time you would cease to exist in the future. So basically when Marty,Jennifer, and Doc left 1985 in the Delorean and went into the future, technically their lives wouldn't have existed in the future they were heading to. Kinda like removing your self from the galaxy, universe, Space-time continuim.

Then with going into the past, once you emerged in the past you would alter the future immediately. Since you do not belong in the past, and you are merging into the natural flow or events of the past. Then coming back would be near to impossible to emerge in "your" time. Since the timelines have been change and causing the future to be nothing like what you left. Also since traveling into the past it could have cause you to exist in the future as well.

My other thoughts with time travel is that you might travel into parallel universes and never be able to return to your home universe. This of course time travel is ever concieved and ever used.

I've actually readtheories on this. Like how Marty probably gets commited. All his memories no longer are true, and everyones personality is different, so technically they would think he's crazy. "Hey marty remember that time we..." but the events have changed, so he doesn't remember it.

As a third year Astrophysicist I feel comfortable in saying this.

Don't hold your breath.

Me, Grimlock, I love your posts, good work mah boy!

I love Hawking, that old nut. What a mind the man has! He also clearly says there 98% the speed of light. Which suggests you wouldn't have to travel at c to get the desired effect of fast forwarding through time, which as has been said is perfectly acceptable since mass dilation increases exponentially (I think, I'll reference after double checking my library) as light increases towards c.

And on a separate and older note, anyone that can conceive an object travelling faster than the speed of light is lying. If a physics fellow of 40 years has trouble conceiving it, I'll be damned if you can.

Give it time. We spent several millennia thinking the Earth was the center of the universe, it wasn't until relatively recently that we learned we were wrong. Just because we think it's impossible now, doesn't mean it won't become possible eventually.

If we keep accelerating at the rate we are, maybe it won't be science fiction. But that's gotta be a way off yet, we can't even produce clean energy yet.

Though I think you quoted the wrong section there, I have a two versions of the same answer for you that'll cover both topics nicely.

Given, evolution is far slower process than technological evolution. But as we grow and we slowly realise our potential, who's to say there's not some part of the brain, as of yet unused, that won't make rocket science and relativity look like calculating the volume of a cube. We can only get smarter, hopefully.

And then, the technological side of things. Everyone can appreciate that we're essentially accelerating in this aspect. Not 100 years ago was space flight unbelievable, but now? Like my fellow astro student says; Bam, cake in a cup.
We're only going to progress quicker and quicker as 1) our evolution progresses and smarter and smarter generations come into being, and 2) our technology becomes more and more advanced, allowing for even more advanced and absurd techniques to be used to get results.

I personally look forward to having my own flying car in the next fifty years.

Yea I would believe it he would have no way to figure out how is "other" self was in the past/future.

I just think Doc's speech in Back to the Future: Part II with the chalk board somes up some time travle problems.

With Marty being committed, I think they hinted at that in the second movie. As for his "Other" self, you'd think it wouldn't be a problem running into it. "Remember that time Doc took you and Jennifer to the future? Well guess what time it is!"

Not to mention you need currency of that time period. If you traveled backwards in time to 1984 and used 2010 currency to buy anything, there is a strong possibility that you would wind in a 1984 prison cell for counterfeiting.

Three problems with that:

1. You can't use gold to buy retail. You need to sell it, get the actual paper money, THEN buy.

2. If you have enough gold to buy all of G1, there will be many questions as to where it came from. And they won't just accept any old lie, you'll need to give a lot more than your word.

3. Unless you steal the gold from a point in time AFTER you die, future-you is going to have a lot to account for.

Who said go back? take the gold and stay in the past. also (excluding the whole "time paradox" thing) by changing the past, the future doesn't happen, no accountability. you steal from a non-existent timeline.

You'd still need to explain to the government and IRS where you got the gold. They don't take the sudden appearance of a large amount of gold that shouldn't exist lightly. That and...seriously, you WANT to relive the '80s and '90s? Using that whole "Bet on future sports events and invest in companies" scheme doesn't work since, as you explained, those events wouldn't occur. Not to mention that primitive piece of junk they called the "internet" back then.

Who said stay in america?

also if you spend the stuff slowly, who are you reporting to? a homeless person clears about 20k a year begging for change. Hell, Drug dealers make how much undocumented money? I'm sure given enough incentive, you can figure something out. even black market, half price on gold you can sell it for enough to live comfortably. OR start up a fake business for tax purposes.

also who said recent history? go back to the old west (like doc did in BTTF 3) and claim you mined it. or call it pirate treasure.

and there is more to life to the internet (as millions of years of human evolution is a testament to).

It would have to be recent history. We're talking about going back in time to buy all the G1 TFs during their original run, between 1984 and 1986.

I'd love to see proof of this, otherwise you're just making things up.
