Ambitious, driven, fairly unrealistic and not too smart in the long run. Yup, it fits.

The thing that bugs me is that most people tend to regard Starscream as a coward.

I see him as more of a shrewd opportunist who knows when to get out when things get screwy. I don't call that cowardice, I call that using your head.

As the old saying goes: "He who fights and runs away, lives to fight another day.", as in when the conditions suit ol' Starscream and not his opponents.

I mean, if you're on your own, outnumbered and outgunned, would you stay around to get slaughtered, or would you retreat, bide your time, then pick them off one by one?

I know I would...

I would say that the character has been deepened more by the fanbase than by his actual media appearances rather than misunderstood. Galvatron's more misunderstood (and he's not very) just because he's often seen as only crazy and not powerful and crazy. Starscream is obssessed over, and such different people like to view his character differently.

I wonder what it is about Screamer that makes him obsession-worthy? Of all the Tf's he is one of the few to have a fangirl thing. Why does he have fangirls? And do other Tf's have fangirls?

I'm sorry, are you calling an '80s children's cartoon villain "Deep and Meaningful"?

Really, get off your computer. Go outside, get some fresh air. You obviously lack it.

Perhaps.

But Starscream really only goes for the kill when Megatron is already down. He's afraid to attack Megatron when Megs is at his best.

yes, and we learn from them. Starscream just keeps saying about how he's the best, even when Bruticus is defeated, hell, even after he's dead he's still an egotistical prick.

And my point about his Old Lady Voice still stands. When I saw TF:TM for the first time when I was 13 (Not long after joining here) I was shocked to find that Starscream sounded remarkably like the old lady from YuYu Hakusho. I think her name was Genkai.

The voice thing I can understand. Starscream got stiffed in that respect.

But the fact that he won't freaking stop is another insight into human nature, and another lesson he can teach us. KNOW WHEN TO QUIT! I've met a lot of people who didn't know when to quit. Either they're in denial, hopelessly optimistic, or they just refuse to accept it.

The fact that you're trying to figure out human nature from a character from an '80s Kids Show, is just...sad.

There was no philosophic/social commentary in there. You're looking WAY too deeply into it.

You are starting to sound a bit patronizing about a show that eventually exploded into a worldwide fandom consisting of kids and adult as well as a PG-13 movie in the making! /:)

This is sci-fi stuff and good science fiction characters keep getting new info added to them, making them more and more interesting and yes, MORE multi-layered over the years - both by the creators and fans alike. That is what made characters like Starscream so fun and memorable.

Correct.

But he was spot-on in pinning SS's archetype.

A more underrated charachter would by Cyclonus, IMHO. He kept the Decepticons going after Galvatron's defeat, and subsequent madness thereafter.

Starscream's always been one of my favorite characters, and this thread has made me like him even more.

I think in the beginning, as a kid, I just loved his alt mode, I was always fascinated by things that fly.

Later on, re-watching the original show a few years ago, I identified with his underdog status, his boldness to question authority, and his determination. He's probably the best overall character to me.

I was so stoked when he finally got his turn in Galaxy Force, but of course that's another story, and another Starscream altogether.

It's the Japanese version of Transformers: Cybertron. I prefer reading the subtitles to poor voice acting.
