Prime or Primal

There is more to Transformers than movies, cartoons, comics and toys. Discuss anything else Transformers here.

Essentially, for Beast Wars, they did all the voice acting, then the animations were done to fit the voices. This allowed for a more natural, flowing kind of Voice Acting which is generally top notch.

With the Unicron trilogy, the animations were all done by the time the voice actors started working. That means they have to get their lines in within say, six seconds. It's far more unnatural and leaves very little room to maneuver, so if Gary isn't at his best it's because he's at an artificial disadvantage.

QFT, judging any of the voice actors in the Unicron Trilogy is unfair. Try inflecting emotion with a time limit.

I have to go with Prime, just because he is so fused with my childhood.

BUT, if I grew up during Beast Wars, my answer would be different. Primal has all the same great elements that will hook a kid for life.

I wouldnt want to give one up for the other. Plenty of room in the TF universe for them both.

I think that honor already went to Tony Jay.

In my opinion, Prime or Primal is too broad a question; both guys have multiple versions. Primal had Beast Wars and Beast Machines (I consider them separate characters; in fact, part of me believes that the Oracle monkeyed with Primal's brain), while Prime has everything else. So, instead, I'll list what versions of the two I like the most.

Prime: It's a toss-up between G1-Movie Prime and 07Movie Prime. Both are powerful, courageous, and take no prisoners. (Yes, I consider G1-cartoon Prime different from G1-Movie Prime; the latter is much fiercer than the former.)

Primal: Beast Wars all the way; while I liked the regret and anger he expressed as a result of "losing" the Beast Wars, I absolutely loathe the enviro-friendly crap that the writers tried to shove down the fandom's throat. We see enough of that garbage on TV as it is. We DO NOT need it in Transformers, a show about ROBOTS.

I like the BW Primal, just not the BM Primal...

In fact I like BW Primal more than Prime.

Optimus Primal is a gorilla NOT a monkey. Monkeys have tails :P

That being said...

It's something of a toss up for me. I loved Prime growing up. He was always my favorite TF and I would always be Prime when palying TF with the kids on my street. Of course being the oldest had something to do with it.

Optimus Primal brought something more to leadership in Beast Wars. He was a character you could relate to more. He had flaws and really didn't have the greatest connection with his Maximals at the beginning of BW (particularly Rattrap). But he made it work.

Prime already had the respect and loyalty of his Autobots where Primal had to earn it and did.

To answer the question. Optimus Primal

I prefer Primal, he's more...human and easier for the audience to relate to, whereas Prime was just too perfect IMHO.

I enjoyed Prime alot from the G1, but as far as character goes, i have to go with Primal. I really enjoyed his character with Beast Wars and more so Beast Machines ( not many do but w/e ), with how he was thrown right into the whole mess with being leader in both shows.

I really enjoyed the situiation that was present in BM more then BW with Megatron making Cybertron his own to command by making himself to be the only one with a free will/ mind and having the Maximals start out in a really bad situation which Primal using alot of effort of body and spark brings things back togther without the " quick and easily fixed cliche that Prime seems to have ( though thankfully that changed a bit in the later eps)

Not to mention how Primal starts out with a struggle of being doubtful and shows that he isnt a cliched "super hero" character. I like how he disiplined himself and became that character that you could really sympathize with their struggle against Megs, not to mention the wisdom Primal gave to the others imo, was better then Primes ( though Prime had his fair share of great wisdom).

nostalgia-wise: G1 Prime

character-wise: Primal

hard to decide between the two, but since G1 Prime already has all the lovin' in this world (Masterpiece treatment, infinite resurrection due to appearances in every TF show, movie star, etc.) i'd go with Primal since after Beast Wars/Machines he didn't get featured in any show.

besides, he was the most humanlike in terms of character and personality of all the leaders. i just love it when he makes some hasty decisions and yet be wise in most situations. he's more complicated than G1 Prime, who tended to be more straightforward.

with a whiny and disgruntled crew (Rattrap and Dinobot) making team efforts a pain in the arse every episode they're in, it's a great show of leadership skills that he (Primal) managed to get them through everytime.

plus he's got that sense of humor, and Gary Chalk's voice is a nice contrast to Peter Cullen's.

only crappy thing (and get's tired after a while) about Primal is the tendency to overuse "Well, that's just PRIME."

I guess they wanted Primal to have a motto that he uses often, a throwback to prime saying Rollout, which i think Optimal Optimus used in one of the episodes, though i can't remember :P.

well, in fairness to OP, at least he doesn't use it like on an average of every other episode or so. :P
