Scale in differnet lines.

Postby Droopz » Tue Jun 12, 2007 10:18 pm

I'm mildly OCD and differing scales in the various TF lines I really driving me nuts.

*This thread serves no real purpose other than to be a place for me to vent a bit.*

Because of my OCD the only line I have been able to collect for display have been alts/bins/kiss and even then, the scales shift slightly from toy to toy, and I have a major issue with displaying them with my masterpiece Prime and Magnus, which could have easily been made into a closer scale.

Now we have this new line of movie figures coming out and everything looked fairly good, so I was about to head down and buy them all (Autobots only, the deceptions scale is WAYYY out), only to find that they are all fairly good except Jazz, who in his car form is nearly as big is a Ironhide!

Why is it SO wrong to at least partially match up the scales within a single line, especially since the alts a licenced and you'd think, ment to be displayed together.

Now I'm going to not buy Jazz, but not having all the Autobots pokes my OCD just as much :S

/usless rant.

Although I completly disagree with "Not buying Transformers because of scaling", I do understand it. When it comes to most hobbies, everything is in scale with each other. Gundam, Lego, etc.

With Transformers, I never have seen a line with proper scales. Like take Armada for example. If everything was to scale, Jetfire would be huge, Sideways would be ridicolously small, and Unicron would be... well yeah, don't need to mention it. Beast Wars? If everything was to scale, Ironhide the elephant would be three times the length of cheetor instead of the same length.

The problem with "Not buying Transformers because of scaling" is that it will be a problem forever. If everything was to scale as in everything was a lot smaller, it would too hard to make. Pieces would be too fragile, and transformers would break after a certain amount of transformations. And if this didn't happen, then putting things to scale by making them bigger would be even worse. Transformers might be double the cost, toys might even be limited, and well hey, less people might join the hobby.

All I gotta say is to "take it as it is". Unless a line where all the transformers are cars, trucks, etc, there won't be any proper scaling at all. But what can you expect? Transformers has dragons, birds, planes, cars, trucks, motorcycles, even freaking planet-shaped transformers... You can't expect everything to be scaled!

Your right, and I guess if i wasn't OCD I'd just live with it. I understand that, I guess it just annoys me when its so close to right and isn't...

Why isnt Jazz the same size as bumblebee? What design feature ment that he had to be 10mm longer and 5mm wider? The whole autobot movie range would have nearly been spot on if it wasnt for that.

Ahhh well... regardless. Since my first post I went down and bought all the ones they had (no Barricade or Ratchet).

I just hope more alts show up soon.

You're fussing over millimeters?

Here is the thing, the size of the figures is not determined by scale. Deluxe is assigned by the volume of plastic to be used. Which is why Classics BB comes with the dinky jetski trailer thing. BB is smaller than the rest of the classics but they add that trailer thing to make up for it.

Believe me I know that it seems that i've blown it out of proportion (what an awesome pun), but that is the nature of suffering from OCD.

EDIT: Thanks for the info re: plastics volume. That does make sense, altough in this one case there if more plastic in Jazz than BB.

I picked up Jazz regardless and will most likely just display him in bot form.

One good thing out of all this is that the trailer I bought for MP1 is closer to the scale needed for movie Leader Prime.

Perhaps one way to deal with the whole scaling thing is to maybe just display everything in Robot Mode?

When in comes to your point on Jazz I actually agree with you compared to Bumblebee. I guess as it is the MOVIE line they should have put it to proportions. Atleast Armada Cars like Sideswipe, Hot Shot and Blurr were the same sizes

Really? Are you saying there's the same amount of plastic in, say, Cybertron Thunderblast as there is in Hot Shot? Seems unlikely to me.

Of course, but a scale so imprecise as to be pretty much meaningless. There always seems to be a big range in size, and I'm guessing weight too, within each class.

Just go for the alternators range, all of the figures are perfectly scaled with each other.

Not realy; Thunderblast for example is probably the lightest of the Cybertron deluxes and is still heavier than any of the basics. On the other hand CD Hotshot is probably the heaviest of the deluxes and is still lighter than the lightest voyagers.

I'm sure there is probably a range that they can work in with the plastic volume. They could have made Jazz a bit smaller and lighter and still fit it in the deluxe range. But then the mechanics of the figure likely wouldn't work. Things have to be tweaked here and there.

But imagine how small Blackout would be if he were really a basic rather than just having a bobot mode slightly larger than a basic. Were he really a basic he would be shorter than Classics BB.

It kind of depends on whether you think Transformers should match up with their real world disguise sizes. For example, in Cybertron, Jetfire is a fairly large cargo plane equal in size to at least a C17. Optimus should be about the size of a hook and ladder fire truck. But when you use those scales, you should use the Ultra Jetfire with the Legends Optimus; the rest of the autobots probably should be Legends or even Cybertron minicons.
