Should Hasbro import and sell the Revoltechs line or similar figures, and what of Devastator??

Postby skywarp-2 » Sun Sep 09, 2007 8:05 am

I was looking at some images of the sweet, JD Productions Devestator, and I kept wondering... why Hasn't Hasbro imported the Revoltech line up, and why haven't they incorporated the Dai Atlas figure and made a Devestator like this one:

http://www.robot-japan.com/Gallery/JD-P ... /index.asp

granted this is a prototype static figure, but in plastic and revoltech joints, he would sooo rock my shelf battles with furiousness never felt on that scale before!!!

Not sure if that would work as a Revoltech unless severely scaled down, the joint simply would be able to take the weight even if you scaled the joints up. However the reasons the Revoltech line has not been imported to the US by Hasbro are several fold:

a) Revoltech is produced and owned by Kaiyodo, popular anime, mecha and video game characters are licensed by the owner of the property to them for use in the line. Therefore the TF Revoltechs are licensed from TakaraTomy and are in no way the property of either TakaraTomy or Hasbro.

b) If Revoltech were to be imported to the states Kaiyodo would decide who markets and distributes them (in fact I believe Organic Hobby Inc. handle distribution). Hasbro would quite possible not be their fist choice given the wealth of other popular franchises represented in the Revoltech line.

c) In order to release Revoltech in the west new licenses would have to be negotiated with the owners of the rights to those properties in those respective countries. i.e Hasbro would have to strike a deal with whoever releases the figures in the US to use Transformers characters and likenesses. The same would have to take place with the owners of Evangelion, Patlabor, Mazinkaiser, Giant Robo etc etc...

In short its not going to be down to Hasbro if the line ever surfaces in the US unless they purposefully go after forming a partnership with Kaiyodo, which I doubt they would as Revoltech is not particularly commercially viable in the west were the market for action figures is still predominantly children.

well they severly need to up the anty on the Robot Replicas, they pale in comparison to the revoltech lines paint apps and quality.. not to mention the sever lack of realistic proportions... what was that crap about with Barricade's gigantic noggin???

Hasbro needs to do their own revoltech line under robot replicas and give us G-1 characters that give revoltech a severe inferiority complex!!!

I do disagree with you on the joints for a figure that big, with a ratcheting joint system I think that it would hold up quite well..and also upping the revoltech joints in scale would help as well...not all the plastic on him would need to be solid.. that would also help.. that Devestator as a huge and fully posable figure would the crown jewel of my collection, if ever produced!!

by the way, nice sig.. ;)^

Although that would be nice I don't see that ever happening. Revoltech is moving on leaps and bound with each figure released, Hasbro have a lot of ground to make up for Robot Replicas to ever be as impressive. Plus Revoltech have the added bonus of not being tied down to one licence or continuity. They can do TFs, Evas, Valks, Buster machines, Patlabors, whatever they care to purchase the licence for. I don't see Hasbro ever offering that sort of diversity.

As for the joint thing, it might be possible to make a revoltech joint big enough and strong enough to support the weight of that figure but in order to it to take the weight it would most probably have to be anchored down at either end, meaning you'd lose some of the articulation that revolver joins afford smaller figures. I'm sure it would be an awesome figure nonetheless (although I don't really like the head sculpt) but maybe revolver joints wouldn't be the best way of articulating figure of this size.

agreed and Devestator needs to be a huge box set, with multiple heads, hands and an exclusive regular sized revoltech figure to go with him...

Now don't get me wrong because I think devastator's super wing on his chest looks cool, but I've always felt like the superwing would limit his overall range of motion in his arms, not just on this model but all forms of devastator including the cartoon.

I know it definitely gets in the way of my G1 devastaor, and sometimes his fists just shoot off when they make contact with the wing, lol.

The Revoltech line is already distributed in the US through Diamond, generally appearing in comic book stores, and is the point of origin for most of the ones stocked by Entertainment Earth. The only ones not imported thus far are the exclusives - for obvious reason - and the Transformers, because Kaiyodo's license to those characters is only with TakaraTomy, not Hasbro.

I just love all of these threads of yours, skywarp-2. You're like a less-articulate whatshisname... you know the one I mean, ak.

thanks, though i don't know if less articulate is good or not in that instance.. I appreciate that my threads are found to be engaging and not boring...

Maybe I should have titled this thread, should there be a giant devastator revoltech toy made? that is actually what I'm aiming at... I got the revoltech transformers so far, except dai atlas, which I mnay purchase one day if he ever drops in price that is... but still, I would love to have a huge devastator in my revoltech line up, but not necessarily witht he constipated surprised face of the ones pictured above...

ofcourse, the seekers would be even nicer, and maybe autobots and go beyond what takara did with the mega scf series..you know I don't understand how people can scoff at the revoltech figures, so they don't transform, so what... it's the characters I'm intrigued with.. not their altmode..

also the wing in the front of "D" can get in his way abit, but I think the whole purpose of it, is a homage to the combiner bots from japan, the "mazingers" and such.. who always had some kind of big wing shaped thing on their chest for effect...

TBH I think it was just put there to cover up all the folded up constructicons that made up his chest, without the wing he looks a little odd and asymetrical. The wing much like the crotch peice sorta pulls together the constructicons into something that resembles a giant robot and not a pile of twisted up construction vehicles. I wouldn't be suprised if Mazinger was an influence to the design but the practical purpose probably came first.

I think that is a fairly logical explaination of the wing.. functionality first, aesthetics 2nd, and a homage to prior Giant Japanese robots roots last..

Revoltech or not that Devastator is fricking hawt. I'd take him as a static vinyl statue.

As for Hasbro bringing these toys over, yes they should do it but do you think they'd have mass appeal? Is Revoltech limited to collectors only? Personally I think the Revoltech Megatron kicks ass but Prime doesn't do anything for me. I'd have to see other characters done in this style to really say if an entire line would work here in the U.S.

ofcourse they do!! there is something to be said though for a toy that is just a great and highly posable representation of a transformable bot.. easily removed and posed, the transformation isn't there, but the "Bling" Factor of having a kickassed Posed bot on your shelf in a Dynamic battle scene is priceless!!! ;)^

Also, I would Imagine Scale would be a little cheaper to produce and to get correct as well...
