Terror: the dentist

Postby Pontimax 01 » Wed Feb 27, 2008 8:43 am

I've never had a filling, but I now know I have some issues I need to see a dentist for. I haven't been to one in awhile, since I broke off the false portion of my front tooth that I chipped in a fight when I was young. Just having that fixed freaked me out to no end. The previous repair lasted 15 years, but when he fixed it, he had to rough up the surface a bit, and even though he said it wasn't going to hurt, I left some pretty decent marks on the armrests, mostly from anxiety. Terror is the only level I could describe feeling.

The good thing is the guy I see/will see, is the dad of one of my best friends from high school, so I trust him and he knows me. But that doesn't mean I'm not PANICKING like a 3 year old.

Just thinking about having to go has ALL of my teeth hurting, and no, I'm not exaggerating. And that's impressive, because I haven't felt any pain til I saw something on the very back molar in the mirror this morning.

Who else is terrified of dentists and how the hell do you get over it?

I had a root canal, crown, my wisdom teeth removed (by cracking and shattering them...), then a large filling done because they damaged a tooth in the operation.

After realizing that literally none of this hurt. I got over the whole Denist thing.

(all of those problems caused by a shift in my previously good wisdom teeth... )

drugs.

Ha, seriously. When my wisdoms came out, my experiences were much like CP's. My oral surgeon had to send me to a surgical center and put me out for almost 2 hours. (double the time for normal surgery, when all 4 are coming out at once)

They didn't put any collateral damage to my other teeth, but they put a lot of scrapes/bruises on my face. Also, they stretched my mouth so far open ... that they had to break the skin. (I was warned about all this BTW) If I had my pics on my work puter I would post them. My face swelled like UNBELIEVABLE!!! Bottom jaw was about 6x's its normal size.

Believe it or not, the worst part was the sore throat I got from being intubated. Also, damn food getting stuck in the healing sockets for a few months afterwards wears on your patience.

A good surgeon will tell you EXACTLY what to expect. I don't fear it at all ... it was actually kind of a cool experience to go through.

True story.

I got my wisdom teeth out and woke up like, right away. I mean, my body cut through the drugs and I was not groggy at all.

My fiance picks me up from the oral surgeon and I'm like, "Let's stop at TRU, maybe there's some new toys!"

There was. I got all the Classics Mini-Cons in one swoop.

Driving along, the mouth gauze shifted in my mouth, which immediately filled up with blood. We pulled over and BLAH....out it all came, right in the middle of a Wendy's parking lot.

oh, the LoLs from the un-amused lunch goers.

What did I care? I had new toys AND narcotics.

Eh, I've always hated the dentist. I'm due for an appointment soon but I think I'll skip it; too much else going on.

Anyway, the only thing that worried me about the dentist I once had was... well... So, I'm there on that slippery leather chair and the dentist and his drinking buddies are all preparing for
Two removals, and Four fillings.
He decides, right there, that, after they gas me, they're ACTUALLY gonna do
Four removals, and Two fillings.
Just like that. Blur couldn't have changed his mind faster.

So then I was out, woke up, and found I couldn't talk properly for all the anesthetic.

Happy memories.

I absolutely hate the dentist. The one I go to has assistants that can barely tie their shoes. Which in turn means that they are constantly stabbing my gums and making me bleed. Not to mention that I swear they clean so far down under the gum line that the hook catches the underside of my smaller teeth. It feels like they're just going to rip them right out.

Everytimg I go that happens and I freak out. I haven't been back in over a year.

Dentists aren't as bad as most other doctors, in my opinion. Most of the ones I have had experience with, and that is a BUNCH, are open and informative when you ask them to be....They do not hem and haw around things, they give a person the bare-bones truth about what torture they are about to inflict upon your mouth! I have had caps, crowns, bridges, root canals, and a jaw repair...I have worn every tooth and jaw appliance ever created by man at least one time in my life...and only one cavity in all that mess! So, yeah...extensive experience with them is why I can say what I say about dentists!

As long as they load me up with novacaine and post-procedural pain meds, I am ALLLLL GOOOOOOD with em! 8-}

Holy crap, it's those stories that just run me away. Teeth shattering, removals, bleeding sockets, swelling, etc. Oh screw all that. Wisdom teeth have always been a concern for me.

and Muffin, that's probably why I developed a fear of them anyway. Damn hygenists stabbing me or otherwise scarying me. Got even worse when I had braces. I can actually remember a time the girl hooked a big piece of gum and tore it loose. I swear they find them off the streets. I'd actually prefer to have some gas even for the cleanings. Who's had laughin gas and what's it like? Never had that either, but if they just numb me, I'll still know what's going on and the stress level will still have me leaving marks on the chair. I wanna be oblivious.

Oh man. I hate this stuff.

Gas sucks. Needles are much better. Gas leaves you lightheaded and sick feeling for a long while. You either wait it out or vomit like I did. After which followed the question "what's for lunch" because I felt awesome afterwards.

Needles however are great. They jab you, 5 seconds later you're out and when you wake up you're okie doke.

Unless, like me, you're terrified of needles, in which case, go for the gas. I dont recall feeling sick, I was more entertained with the numbness. I hate needles... Urgh...

I hate needles as well. Haven't had a shot since I got my MMR shot going into 7th grade. That was like 1993. But in this case, I'd have to weigh the needle vs. the dentist. :-?

I've never disliked going to the dentist, unless that damned drill is involved. Not that it hurts, it's the sound...it drives me crazy, and I've even tried ear plugs. It's such a primal reaction with me, like it is some unnatural frequency that I'm not supposed to be hearing. So uncomfortable. ::shudders::

Needles are nothing man. Little bee sting feeling in the crotch of your arm and 5 seconds later you're done. And with that you don't even have to watch or anything. When I had three impacted baby teeth pulled they gave the option of gas or needle. Back then I was scared shitless of needles so I opted for gas. Bad move on my part. Now every three months I get blood drawn and have become accustomed to them.

I know what you mean, because when I opened my eyes it felt like I was punched awake ... like the opposite of "knocked out." I felt throbbing everywhere, but no pain at all. Nurse came up and asked ... "on a scale from 1 to 10, how bad does it hurt?"

I mustered up the saddest face possible and gave a firm 9. lol. Immediate injection into my IV, and I moon walked outta that place. All I remember was singing to Weezer's blue CD with my friends on the way home, until I passed out and drooled blood all over myself.

I planned to go TF shopping afterwards. I even had my best friend check the NJ sightings page to see if SmokescreenGT posted anything while I was under.(I was in SSGT's area for the surgery)

The people at the pharmacy looked at me as if I had lobsters crawling from my ears. You people don't know what you're missing.

lol. I can't even stand hearing the drill going in another room or while I'm still in the waiting room. I'd literally start sweating, even though I was there for a cleaning. Over the course of the last year I've had a lot of work done on my teeth thanks to all these wonderous years of having diabetes. Two wisdom teeth pulled, one molar pulled, plus fillings on just about all of my teeth. One tooth broke about 2 months later and that was about the only thing that really hurt.

To be honest, I don't even remember anything but the actual pressure of them yanking on the teeth. With all the fillings too, I was extremely loaded up on novacane. With the broken was they barley used anything. If it starts to get too painful when you're there, just stop them and have them numb you up some more.

As long as you've been taking care of yourself, you have nothing to worry about.

Coincidently, with diet change, I cut out soda, white breads, fast food, and lots of raw sugar, and, in addition to now being about 245 lb, down from 265 (I actually spiked to 280 from gaining muscle in the first month), my teeth actually look several shades brighter. I personally think there has to be a correlation there. Teeth weren't meant to take diets of raw sugar.

That I can handle, I try to think of it as a "tooth massage". I can at least feel my teeth and gums getting clean. Sometimes they press down too hard, though.

Yeah, that smell doesn't help much, either. I've seen smoke, too, and felt all the little bits of tooth hitting everywhere.
