The future of transformers toys and the possible shortage?

Postby shortround » Sun Aug 26, 2007 8:04 am

I have been reading alot about the shortage of transformer movie toys. I thought I would start a thread were people could put there two cents in about what they think will happen when the animated toys arrive and also what will happen when classics 2.0/universe figures arrive and will this lead to another shortage for either of these lines much like what has happened with the movie toys.

Well here is what I think will happen first as far as the new animated series goes I don't see there being a shortage because it is aimed at toward a younger demographic, and I have already been reading on this site as well as a few other that quiet a few collecters are not going to be collecting this series of toys. So that brings us to classics 2.0/universe I do see there being a shortage when this are released because all those collectors who passed on the new animated series, and have been save there money knowing that this series was coming will be out there buying alot of these figure possible as many as two or three of a certain figure that they love. So that what I think will happen in the future. Now I would love to hear what you guys think.

I'm very curious to see what happens. If Hasbro plays their cards right, they can use the shortage to their advantage.

Retailers have to be salivating at the demand for TFs. I've seen shelf/peg warmers that have sat for months disappear completely (Cybertron Metroplex, Classics Cliffjumper, Titanium "GI Joe" Megatron, etc). A local Walmart put out a bunch of Classics and Cybertron stock and within a week, it was almost all gone. Six months ago, that stuff would still be sitting there.

I've seen a number of kids with their parents doing the same thing as me - staring at empty pegs. In most cases the kids seem rabid about TFs (kinda reminds me of my youth, begging for G1 Megatron). While kids are only going to be into TFs until the next big thing comes along, if the enthusiasm can last until October when the movie comes out on DVD, I think the momentum will continue through the holiday season.

At this point, the demand is such that I think people (mainly parents, to satisfy their kids) will buy anything that says "Transformers" on it. That makes anything new, especially the animated figures, fair game.

If all of the above happens - and I think it will - we're going to be battling every mom and grandma for our TFs until after the holiday season.

Hasbro's quarterly profits for the December quarter will be amongst the highest they have ever made.

And that's all that will matter to them.

I can see Hasbro taking advantage of the shortage (increasing demand), however, they should be careful to not keep people salavationg for too long. Otherwise, people will start to think that the hassle of looking isn't worth it.
