If Lio had a hip swivel ratchet it woulda been fine. Primus knows he had enough of a Pelvis to stash one in that hinge plate. You coulda turned the hip 90* and used the leg joint as an elbow. Then he could at least do an Uppercut.

I really liked the G1 Ultra Magnus toy. I owned it back in the day and, together with my G1 Scourge and Galvatron, re-enacted one of my favourite Movie scenes
From what I've seen, MP-22 Ultra Magnus looks incredible. A friend of mine who is trying to recreate The Movie through the MP line, bought him not too long ago and I had a look. He's heavier than I expected.

That said, this guy is my favourite. I bought him by random chance as I really liked his design. Much like latter Galvatron's, one of the prerequisites I have for enjoying an Ultra Magnus toy, is that he isn't just a Prime repaint/retool. This guy definitely isn't that. Not sure if he was ever used in the show as I couldn't stand the Unicron trilogy, but this guy I did like very much.

He really is. As a G1 Ultra Magnus fan, he just looks so spot on the cartoon. That's why I really like the CW Ultra Magnus as an updated G1 Magnus. He really looks like an evolution of G1. All the important cues are there with a modern look, as well as retaining the armored bot gimmick (not in the best way for me, but at least they tried) that most other Magni decided to forgo as of late.

I was hoping someone would bring up this guy!

I remember I bought Armada Overload, got him home, broke him out, and transformed him. I was instantly like, WTF! This is Magnus! What's with this weak deco?! Why is he called Overload?! He's totally Ultra Magnus. He's the perfect situation to be Magnus. Little truck with big trailer that transforms into a giant suit of armor.
I moved on, but when Energon Ultra Magnus came out, I was pissed. and this was back when I was a starving musician/poor college student, and had to adhere to a strict no repaints budget. I had to let him go.

Anyway as under articulated as that figure is, he makes for a big beefy badass Magnus. I love the sculpt on that big ol' box bot. Glad you felt contractually obligated to say something Overcracker!

I'll have you know that in Takara's Micron Legends, Overload is indeed called Ultra Magnus, with Rollout as Magnus

You're lucky to have actually seen one in the wilds. I saw him once at a Walmart, didn't have the money right then to get him so I figured I'd just get him later, and never saw him again. People think weird Hasbro distribution is a new thing, but this guy (and Treadbolt, but most people didn't like that mold) only existed to get something on the shelf temporarily at the last minute. I still want him, but I'm not paying $200+ for him.

Glad I'm not the only one that likes that mold.

I did get Armada Overload, and was also incredibly confused why he was not Magnus.

Then when Energon rolled around and he was repainted it was like, yeah that's the one. I don't believe he was in the cartoon no.

Never did get to see him at actual retail though, but years later was able to pick him up from BBTS.

He's just a fun mold overall, and the first one (Overload actually) with the transformation sound when you plug in the magnus head.

His interaction with Armada Prime was one of the coolest ones since God Bomber. A Pair of massive shoulder guns.

Yeah, that Lucky Draw version although not in the traditional gold chrome of other Lucky Draw figures is still one of the more elusive and rare and expensive figures out there.

Nice review as always. Glad to see G1 Magnus on the list though I'd have ranked him higher.

I never understood why fans don't like the armour concept as I think it's the main selling point and substantially adds to the toy's appeal.

As a fellow fan of the armour gimmick, I would recommend you pick up the third party cab for the Combiner Wars version. I got it at Christmas and it greatly enhances an already nice toy.

He is pretty much the only non G1 based Utra Magnus that is also a car carrier. It's a nice fresh take on the alt mode and it looks great and functions really well too. Sadly, the robot mode is more of a walking gimick to combine with Optimus to form Omega Prime. But boy is it a beautiful combined mode. Still, it is impressive to see all the articulation the robot mode has for what is essentially a robot walking on stilts.

I seriously can't wait for this re-issue... Even though I'll be broke. Haha

I don't have a problem with parts forming as long as the end result is good. Some people despise it but I don't at all. Cybertron Optimus Prime is a parts former in supermode, but I think it definitely adds to the actionability. Using the trailer as a gun base (which, when I got the toy I did, but then it showed up in the show and I thought it was cool that they actually used it. Cybertron models were pretty toy based, and it seemed like they actually played with the toys and thought what can you do with this?) or a shield for wounded Autobots while the cab/Prime separately takes Decepticons numbers.

With all the parts forming hate and the veer towards "cartoon accuracy," I feel like "white Prime powered up in armor" has gone the way of the Dinobot... But then again they finally reissued G1 style Dinobots. And so I remain hopeful.

If we're going this way my favourite Magnus remains the white Classics Prime with the City Commander trailer. It has it's faults and it's detractors, especially after all this time, but that remains my preferred Magnus. I like the scale, I like the playability, the overall look ...

No place on THIS list, but still. I like the idea of an armoured up white Prime too.

A great list, but I would've had CW Ultra Magnus lower. His inability to solidly hold his weapons, and inability to really hold cars in carrier mode, sinks him from number one. He'd still be on the list, just not at one.

Willy J, maybe you should do a list just for the white Prime versions.

There is another too, in the RID line, but it has some blue as well:



I would still count it though since it is a very easy redeco of a Prime toy. And it does have that bold white look, especially in car mode

Not sure I'd count the Pen. But won't stop you from counting it. Though that does bring up one more. The Revoltech Magnus. Would that also count?

Forgot about the legends one. I do own the Motormaster repaint from that set with the purple g2 prime, jazz and thundercracker and he is super tiny.

As far as the R.I.D Magnus, him I never knew about. Probably because I'm not following R.I.D as close as other cartoon associated lines.
