Yeah, because who could have possibly thought a film pandering to the very lowest common denominator would be profitable?

Let me make something crystal clear....
THIS IS A MOVIE BASED ON A SHOW THAT CAME FROM A TOY LINE IN THE 80'S. IT'S ABOUT GIANT ROBOTS THAT TURN INTO CARS!!!!
Either this movie was going to take itself way too seriously for anyone but the die hard Transformer fans to enjoy, or it was going to roll along with the absurdity of the concept and make it enjoyable for everyone. Seriously, what the hell are you thinking? Movies need to make money, and if they don't then it's a waste of time and money no matter how wonderful the end product may be. Not to mention that the entire FOUNDATION of Transformers was fluff to begin with.

I dont see why it would. I mean I was not a hater, nor was I a lover of the overall movie, but since when does the box office turnout, in this case North American box office turnout, mean it was a good movie? Just look at Wild Hogs. What it makes and what people think of it afterwards or for some even before, its different sides of the coin.
is reffering too.Maju Garzett wrote:Makes all the pre-movie haters feel stupid, doesn't it?

I dunno... when's it come out?
So far, I haven't seen the massive media blitz of advertising like Transformers were given.
And it's quickly missing the "summer movie" boat made of gold.

It isn't based upon a cartoon about a bunch of teens, their inept parents, a top-secret government MIB organization, and a a bunch of people who can do magic by with their magical hacking skills, either. Yes, it was based on a silly children's cartoon with transparent social caricature characters but that doesn't mean there has to be 2 hours of puerile humor. It IS possible to be tongue-in-cheek, self-referential, and NOT resort to "this human boy wants to mate with the girl (cue Sam trying and failing to emote embaressment) hur hur hur hur" schtick.
"It's highly technological. Probably Japanese. Because the Japanese are one of the world's leading exporters of technology. See what I did there? Hur hur hur hur hur. Ironhide has a cow's head. So he's probably from the United States, because they're one of the world's leading exporters of beef. Hur hur hur hur."
Look, he said masturbation. That's a funny word. Hur hur hur. Ladiesmanwhatever is a funny screenname, hurhurhur. Oh look, he's peeing on them. Hur hur hur. Oh that Frenzy, he's so funny with his crazy little frenetic behavior, hur hur hur. Wow, he needs them to hide, but they can't, because they're so large, and they're not familiar with Earth, so they think that parking on the lawn is a good disguise, hur hur hur. That chihuahua thinks its tough, hur hur hur. Hey, he said "bitches" and is throwing out gang-signs because he learned to be black from the magical internet. That's funny! Oh, he died. :::cry:::.
The Brady Bunch movies were funnier than this tripe. Hell, even the Mission Impossible films (as much as I dislike them) had funnier jokes.

I'm sorry, but you are apparently takingn the concept of GIANT TRANSFORMING ROBOTS too seriously.
IT'S SERIOUS BUSINESS GUYS!!!! WE NEED SERIOUS JOKES IN HERE!! No cheese! That is most certainly NOT what Transformers, an 80's toy line that made TV shows and movies just to sell said toys is all about!!!
What's next? You're going to tell us that laughing at any jokes in this movie makes us Communists? Wouldn't surprise me, since you apparently think that you're precious childhood memories are beyond reproach. Go ahead and watch the original cartoons right now and keep telling yourself how much better those are.
HUR HUR HUR, Grimlock said 'Me Grimlock' again!!!!

You're going to try and defend the endless bad jokes in this (what Bay has so proudly declared to be more than a silly toy commercial) based on THAT? Where did I say the cartoons are any better? They were great when I was in elementary school but the last time I tried watching them with my nephew I laughed because of how stupid it was, not because of the jokes. And I LIKE good slapstick and irreverent humor. There's no such thing as a serious joke, but there is a such thing as WITTY humor (as opposed to the witless variety).
As I said, it panders to the lowest common denominator. It is to cinema what Carlos Mencia is to stand-up comedy.

So, you're complaining about the movie being close to the source material?

If this movie is based on some hybrid of an American Pie 2 (the one that retreads the same tired schtick) and Scooby Doo 2 named Transformers that I've never heard of, then yeah.

Wow, you know, randomly putting movie titles together that have NOTHING to do with what you are attempting to compare makes a terrible comparison. American Pie 2 and Scooby Doo really don't have anything to do with Transformers, unless they're action movies. The largest complaint for Scooby Doo 2 is how horrible the CG Scooby Doo looked in comparison to the rest of the movie, and I assume there's more because I never cared to see it. I guess for the next movie, you can ask Michael Bay to have people dress up in suits and beat on each other. Not to mention the fact that NEITHER OF THOSE MOVIES ARE ACTION MOVIES. And you keep mentioning 'retread'. How many other transforming robot movies do you know of? Because I think we'd all like to see those too.
I'd compare the comedy in Transformers to Dane Cook's humour. Juvenile, over the top, cheesy, but it sometimes works and is funny in spite of itself.
Ballistic90 wrote:The Simpsons movie probably won't bring in the people they're expecting. It's gone downhill for a long time and they've lost more fans than they care to count. Sure, it's still a widely watched show, but unlike Transformers it's not going to bring in the action crowd. I think the last estimates had The Simpsons being watched by 30 million people. This Transformers movie has been watched by over 200 million so far. Big difference.

Try to keep up. I'm not referring to the movie itself as a retread (though apart from the invading aliens being transforming robots everything else about the plot is 'borrowed' from some/numerous other film/films), I'm referring to the humor. American Pie 2 and Scooby Doo 2 were comedies. Tired comedies with tired jokes, in Scooby Doo's case, jokes that cgi characters didn't make any funnier.
There's like 70-80 minutes of action in Transformers. The rest is crap attempts as humor, and it's over 2 hours long.
Nemescream wrote:I'm sure Bay is relieved, after The Island bombed so bad last Summer. Career saved by nerds and car robots! Must be pretty sobering for him considering how much he initially loathed the idea, and still hates the G1 cartoon.
Now they need to bring in a new writer (SIMON FURMAN PLZ), and a new director for the sequels.
