Twilight may have the badest assed vampires of all time, but from commericals they look like wussies. I know the vampire experiences centuries of the existential crisis of being alone and never being able to experience human love without cursing the one they love to the same life-in-death state of living dead, but must they really be such cry babies?
From what I understand that is one of the themes of Twilight with what's his name (Edward?) not wanting to turn some girl into a vampire, but dudes, really, sounds too whiney for my tastes.

If you'll excuse me for being Edward a moment,

Pansy!!

Nah, I'm just kidding. Couldn't help myself. Sorry.

Anyhow, before I posted my reaction to the movie, so I'm sort of over judging it and since I sort of enjoyed the movie, I'm not putting it down or anything. But I still think Edward is a pansy.

I know there's an internal conflict invloved in being a vampire, and never even heard of the game you mentioned, and I think I said previously that I love a good existential crisis probably more than the next guy, but I still like strong, manly vampires. Not ones that glitter in the sun. They should turn to dust like everyone else when the sun shines on them. Anyhow, no foul intent with the opening comment, you know. It just struck me as funny.

I agree with you, though. Not about me being a pansy, I mean, but that strong vampires are more interesting (and, heck, often more genuinely sympathetic) than "nice" ones. I also thought Twilight was a fun read, and the movie wasn't bad either, but I prefer a Kain or a Radu (from Subspecies) to an Edward.

Although he was undoubtably inspired by him, they're not supposed to be the same guy. Radu Vladislas is the black sheep of a family of vampire nobles.

Well, I finished the series and Stephanie Meyer came close to saving it, but then killed it at the end. Vampire novels should not have a "happily ever after" ending. Everyone got their way and no one of importance suffered any.

She also got dhampir's wrong. She made it so that the gestation period for a dhampir was only about a month and that they are fully aged in 7 years. On top of that, she made so that the mother is supposed to die during labor as the child bites their way out and usually severs the spine. Of course, to keep the story going, Bella miraculously survives while becoming a vampire in the process.

I don't know about you guys, but I thought dhampirs aged the same as mortals until about the age of 25 and that they are born like normal humans are without having to kill the mother. I also thought they had a choice between immortality and mortality.

Well, in Castlevania, Alucard's mother was burned at the stake, having been accused of witchcraft. (Astoundingly, it was for using medicine to heal people, not for giving birth to the Son of Dracula) So I assume he was born without killing her. The same goes for Blade, and I assume Rayne from BloodRayne.

But then Stephanie Meyer has absolutely no regard for any Vampire mythology.

I think the sunlight issue would'nt bother me as much if there was a better explanation for it.

Anne Rice's vampires can survive the sun only when they are super old and suffer only sunburns.

If anyone watched Moonlight, you'll remember that while vampires could go out in the sun, they'd preferred no to as it was uncomortable.

Which is why I'm also assuming that Alucard grew up like a normal human as the memory flash back he had in SOTN made it seem like his mother did'nt die until he was about 25.

Lisa was human (and in the 1400s, where living to 40 was a good long life), so she couldn't have been TOO old, though I assume Dracula was able to allow her to live longer without actually turning her.

Upon checking the Castlevania Wiki, Dracula met Lisa in the 1440s or 1450s, and would have died in 1475 or 1476, So Alucard would be in his mid or early 20s by that time.

Okay, so this may be a necrobump of sorts but I have to respond.

I read Twilight and am halfway through New Moon. Its a serious problem I have, I love to read and when I start a book and discover its a series, I have to read the whole series.

I agree with Robofreaks initial post way back when, A Walk to Remember meets Dracula is a good description of the book.

I'm gonna just say it. I love this series so far.

Man it is such a girl book though. Its hard to read all the mushy descriptions and all that at times, it seems very redundant also when the author keeps describing the same feelings and all that over and over and over.

But for those who haven't read this yet, I won't spoil it. But I'm just past the halfway mark in New Moon and I tell you, man its something when a book gets you excited for whats going to happen next. Definitely a recommended read if you can get past the girly stuff (guys I mean).

Personally (I'll regret saying this *shudders*) I hated every bit of that book and the movie. I find Stephanie Meyer's writing dull. Here I have all of my little friends gathered around me telling me I should read this awesome book. Later I find it to be a total Mary Sue fest. *sigh* When will the Sueage go away? I also found it to be boring and a book that you could sum up in a matter of a few sentences. I was highly disappointed, and thought to myself whence done reading that I could write a better book drunk and unconscious. I've only read the first book and I have no desire whatsoever to read any sequels that follow it. I am a young girl and it doesn't appeal to me whatsoever, despite it's effect on other girls my age.

Oh man, I refuse to read tripe like Twilight on principle. It was bad enough I was forced to sit through the movie - a friend and I lampooned it the whole time, so it was at least funny. I saw the trailer for the next movie... man, and I thought Hayden Christenson and Natalie Portman were wooden actors in the third of the new Star Wars movies (apparently I was so scarred I blocked the name out), they ain't got nothin' on those Twilight actors.

Also, way to teach young girls messed up ideas of romance. I'm all for kids reading, but there are a million better books out there than that trash.

On the other hand, it does give me some hope that I could get published in future. It would be hard to write worse than SMeyer does.

Are you sure you mean third? Because if you think the acting in Revenge of the Sith was that bad, then maybe you haven't heard of Attack of the Clones.

Read the Southern Vampire Mysteries and watch True Blood instead.

Eric Northman is perhaps one of the coolest vampires of all time. Bill isn't to bad either.

Great cast, great writing, great story telling in general.

I actually like the show better then the book series. Mainly because in the show you get more then just Sookie's point of view, but the books are still a great read so far. I highly recommend them.

I can't get my friends to shut up about it half of the time *facepalm*

Also, now that you mention the sparkling factor, he just looked gross and sweaty in the movie and in the book, if that's not Mary Sue tactic, I don't know what is :P . I can deal with sparkling unicorns but vampires?

I second this. Charlaine Harris is a great writer. The books are fluffy and cheezy, but you get completely sucked into them. Yeah, I think the man-hopping (is there an attractive guy in the series that's NOT lusting after Sookie) is a bit of obvious wish-fulfillment, but they're irresistible reads.

I tried to read _Twilight_ because all of my female students were gurgling about it, and I figured maybe I could endure it as the novel in Intro to Lit. Nope. Renne was dead on: every crap stereotype about romance. Ever. And the writing was dreck. And, like Renne, it made me think, MAN, *I* should be published if this is what they're down to. (Dear Hasbro: may I point out I write a great robot dialogue?)

Mind you, I read shojo manga (not often, but I do) and I thought this was just...unendurably saccharine.

And don't even get me started on the casting of the movie. Urgh. I've seen more romantic chemistry between news anchors on my local TV. And the pretentious let's film everything through polarizing filters.... No thanks. The previews were enough for me.

HK, I strongly suspect that Stephanie Meyer has a contract with Lucifer. It's the only explanation.

I just watched the movie a few weeks ago. Despite my reluctance to watch it, I actually enjoyed it...except for the glitter skin but I'm not gonna get into that. My friend let me borrow the book. I'm about halfway through. I'll have to say it's not really grabbed my attention. I just don't feel the 'omg I can't wait to read the next chapter' factor coming into play.
