Twilight book and movie discussion

Postby robofreak » Wed Nov 12, 2008 8:58 pm

I found out a couple weeks ago that the Twilight movie was based on a book. Being the curious person that I am, I went to Borders and bought the book. Overall, I thought the story was decent, but my immediate thoughts are that it's "Walk to Remember"(Sorry, can't think of any other chick flicks at the moment) meets Dracula.

The story arc was good overall, but I feel that it spent way to much time talking about how much in love Bella was with Edward. All the action scenes in the movie trailers are not present in the book which I found dissapointing. As I read, I could tell the story was building up to something cool, but then it just kinda fizzled. I guess you could call it the chick flick of vampire novels. I still plan on watching the movie and I'm hoping that the film fills in the empty action scenes that the book left alone.

I have not read the other 3 books yet and I'm hoping that they have a little more action in them than the first. I've got New Moon by my desk waiting for me to finish up some work this week so I can sit down and start it.

Anyone else here read the book?

Started a thread about this book months ago( no response) I could assume why though, and why( sorry) this thraead might end up in the small discussion section...

1. It's a book whos target is for teenage girls( at least it's audience is), it looks like most members on this site are males so our interest in it isn't that high, same goes for the movie, while I'm sure it'll make a good ammount at the box office, it looks kind of like your standard TV movie you see on lifetime or( forgive me) scifi channel, minus the great cinematography and the actor selections.

2. Most of the guys( and I'm sure other female users on this site) have too much on thier minds enough as it is-There's the new Bond movie coming out day after tomorrow, there's the TF 2 trailer, there's TF comics, there's the new TF toys to buy, there's...Don't know what else we're hyped for.

But to answer the question, no, I've never read the book or it's follow ups, I might see the movie, though I'm having fears that it will be added to my list of "Movies based on mainstream material that misses the boat in a lot of ways during the winter season" alongside Eragon and The Golden Compass.

I like vampires though, so I'll most likely check it out.

Yeah, I figured it wouldn't get much response yet, but I'm sure there will be plenty of us going to see it though.

I'm a guy, but I decided to give the book a shot. Keep in mind I got the book before I knew it was the chick flick of vampire novels. If you like vampires then you most likely want to read the book. Read it while expecting it to not be what you expect and you should enjoy it.

Yes. It weird, but they explain in the book that a vampire secretes a venom into their victims to immobolize them while they feed. If the victim survives then the venom will flow through their body and repair the damage. Once the venom has repaired the body, the heart stops and the person is now a vampire. It's an interesting take on how vampires are created if you ask me.

I dunno, maybe I'm just to fixated on Anne Rice's vampire lore. Even if she is a psycho

I just started Interview with the Vampire! It's awesome. I was told that everything after Queen of the Damned sucked though.

I wouldn't say sucked, just not as good as the first three. I have Interview, The Vampire Lestat, and Queen of the Damned in one giant book format. Its freaking awesome!

Sounds cool. The copy of Interview that I'm reading is from 1976! I think it's one if the first copies.

Lestat is probably one of the coolest characters in the history of fiction. He may not seem so at first, but trust me, he is :P

That's the feeling I'm getting. Right now, I hate the character. Louis is awesome though!

I think he was the inspiration for a couple of the characters in Twilight. There are a couple of characters in the book that are kinda like him.

I like Louis, because he's not really heartless. He looks at everything for what it is or will be. He even sees life as precious unlike Lestat. He does have an anti-hero quality to him. Everyone digs the anti-hero's. 8)

I have read the first two books and have 50 pages left in the 3rd. I can't wait to read the 4th. As far as the action scenes, there is only one on the movie preview that I don't remember being in the book and that's the scene when they are in the woods and he pulls the tree out by the roots and they're standing in the tree looking around. But all of the other scenes in the movie preview are in the book, especially the fight scene in the ballet studio. I think they are great books.

^I just read Twilight and I know for a fact that the fight scene between James and Edward was not in the book. Did I miss something or is it in another book?

You got your whole family on the forums now don't you?

I thought for a minute that I skipped a page. Thank you for proving my sanity. I'm told that Midnight Sun will have the missing scenes from Twilight, but it's on an indefinite hold. I know 12 of the chapters are available online, but I can't bring myself to read them until she finishes writing. Unfortunate side effect of my personality requires that I know everything about a story so only getting part of a book will drive me insane. 8-}

Ok, I swear to god I'm not trolling or whatever, but it's lonely this morning and I just kind of want to talk even though no one will take back becuase this isn't a chat room.....

I haven't read any of these books, but my girlfriend has a love/hate relationship with them. She enjoys them but is like, angry with herself for liking them. This puts me in the position where I'm going to have to see the movie with her, and from the trialer this looks real bad. I've heard good things about the series from some other people, and for whatever reasons the idea my brain assembles is like if Hogwarts was a school of regular kids that gets infiltrated by a vampire kid, and apparently emo fashion is the new trademark requirement for vampirism.

I know that vampire lore traditionally or at least since Stoker makes the vampire into a pretty attractive and mysteriously sensual being, and that Anne Rice really drives that point home, but do all of our vampires really need to be pansies? Twilight may have the badest assed vampires of all time, but from commericals they look like wussies. I know the vampire experiences centuries of the existential crisis of being alone and never being able to experience human love without cursing the one they love to the same life-in-death state of living dead, but must they really be such cry babies?
From what I understand that is one of the themes of Twilight with what's his name (Edward?) not wanting to turn some girl into a vampire, but dudes, really, sounds too whiney for my tastes.

Like I said, I haven;t read any of the books. I'm not intentionally badmouthing the books/movies/whatnot, even if that's how this came out I don't mean it maliciously. Maybe you all could try to enlighten me, but I just wanted to like, toss my impressions out there. Doesn't the movie open today? I hope you guys enjoy it, like I said I'm going to have to take my girlfriend to see it but she doesn't want to go this weekend because she's afraid of all the people who'll go opening day.

I personally don't think you're trolling Dagon. I'm just happy that people want to discuss the book.

The characters in Twilight are'nt really emo at all if you ask me. You have to read the book to understand. Edward likes Bella, but at the same time he does'nt want her to suffer because of him. And the characters are'nt really that whiny. Bella might be the only one that falls into that category.

If you're going to see the movie then you'll definitely want to read the book. Movie opens next week, not this week.

Thanks dude, I do appreciate the validation. :D

Anyhow, I didn't want my post to be upsetting to anyone, and like I said I haven't read any of the books as of yet. Emo was how my girlfriend described the players, and I'm sort of fuzzy on what that really means anyhow or at least the way she uses it. I'm a wee bit older than her, so maybe it's lost in age translation.

Based on what I know, I love the idea that Edward doesn't want the girl he loves to suffer. I love a good existetial crisis. My only first hand exposure comes from the trialer, and as I said the people look a bit whiney to me. Yes, I know how dangerous judgments like that are to make, but I'm sorry, I made one. I swear, swear, swear I'm not looking to upset people by speaking in my Twilight ignorance, and who knows? I might love the hell out of it when we see the movie, but I guessfor that, we're going to have to wait and see.
I'll tell you what, after we go to see the movie, I'll report right back here and tell you all what I think, ok? I hope like crazy you guys like it, cause obviously you're fans. Who knows, maybe I'll join you.

Don't worry, I'm not obsessive about this story. I'll be honest and say that I've read much better stories. I like it though because I find it to be an interesting take on vampires. The reason I started the thread was to discuss, not to obsess about how cool every character is so trashing a character does'nt bother me.

I plan on watching the movie too so we'll have a lot to talk about in the next couple weeks.

Also, to get a good definition of emo, you might want to go listen to some My Chemical Romance. They pretty much sum up emo.

MCR is my girlfriends' favorite band, so I've had the.....pleasure.

Honestly, they aren't that bad, so I stand by my original, or second post original, statement: I'll go see the movie and come back and tell everyone what I think.

Personally, I hope the movie does the book justice for all the fans out there. Nothing is more of a bummer than a movie that forsakes its source and its pre-movie fans.
