I love the idea of having human toys and maybe humans with transformable exosuits that combine togther to form a bigger toy/figure would be great but there will be some size problem.

If you want humans just use Homies and their spinoff ethnic-group-centric brethern. My friend John has a freakin' million of them and they're great for backround characters. We even did and entire 22 page photo comic about them once for a school project of his. As it had Mensia/Chapelle style humor and we're caucasion, it's considered a little racist so no posted images but the point is they work.
