tacogrande wrote:I guess it comes down to ethics and manners. I wouldn't go to someone's house and rearrange the furniture and hide their mail under their car or something. Then again I'm the kind of person who returns the carts to the stations in the parking lot as opposed to just leaving them in a parking space.

I can see why people hide toys, but just because they want something doesn't make it right to do whatever they can. It's not survival of the fittest, it's first come first serve. But like at a restaurant you can't get served without paying. (Ok maybe you could but lets not go into that, it'd be like a bad sitcom episode.)

enough debating about the ethics of hiding TFs. as long as it is not breaking store rules i can see nothing wrong with it. you cannot compare hiding TFs to:

going into people's houses and tampering with the arrangement of their furnitures and mail. for one, that logic is flawed at it's very premise because BASICALLY, those things (furniture, mail, etc.) BELONG to someone else. that's called breaking and entering.

now - TFs at the store, like so many people have stressed here before, are fair game for everyone. no one's bought them yet. as long as you are willing to buy them, why not?

deprivation is not the issue here. hunting for hidden TFs are part of the game. if i stumble upon someone else's stash and have the cash AND like the TF, then why not?

the same goes for me, if someone manages to uncover my hiding place, then i understand that they have every right to buy it off. sure it's painful to lose your most coveted TF to another, but like i said, until somebody actually buys it, it's all fair game.

that's my 2 cents on this matter. 'nuff said.

the moderators gave the warning, don't push ideas so far down they'll be forced to lock this up.

this thread is about people who hide TFs, not some some rant against the morality of the same practice.

if you post here, people assume that you hide TFs, so they are interested as to what are your tactics on this matter.

ok, that's a lot off my chest. 8) as for me, here in our local toy stores, there are actually store representatives who can be talked to into reserving a certain TF for a short amount of time. lucky us, haha.

but if we encounter surly ones, well, i hide it most often at the top shelves, where kids won't find them. LOL. kids with short-attention spans who are fueled by the movie craze and are not interested in TFs long term are the worst haha. :P
all the comments above are the HUMBLE OPINIONS of the said user only. 'nuff sed.

yea i would like to return to the topic, cus people will continue hiding so no point in discussing wheter its right or wrong, but back to the point, i think before hiding u could ask a cashier if they could hold it for a little while, but a good spot to hide something is in a clothes racket, especially the circular ones. also in the like where the microwaves and all that stuff is at, just move it foward enough so theres space to place behind it. i just thought of something, wouldnt it be funny if u found one hidden in the freezer. lol, u walk by and theres a BB next to some frozen dinners. lol

If the figure was bought on Monday, or hidden and bought on Friday, the result remains the same.

I agree that the result is the same, but the means to that specific end can be different.

I saw somebody putting a StarWars unleased figure under the shelf a few years ago, it was one I wanted too so I came back and bought it, I later used his idea and hid an OP alternator under the shelf a year or so ago.most of the bottom shelves in retail stores(walmart, target, tru) can be lifted up and there is a lot of space under there. makes a great hiding spot, but you have to pick a bottom shelf without alot of stuff on it so it can be lifted up, and you have to do it when nobody is around(it obviously looks suspicious lifting the shelf up infront of other people). The employees normally check under the shelves every few months(for cleaning i think), so if you need to hide something for a day or two, hiding under the shelves is your best bet.

You are right. Every department store has security cameras and undercover officers working in the store all day. So whatever you "hide in plain sight" willl be found and returned to the correct peg hook/shelf.
I work for Target, and security usually works in the toy dept. which is usually across from electronics. I know. I always find hidden toys EVERYWHERE and they go right back to the correct place. ALWAYS. Plus I usually work in toys 3 days a week. So I know.

The problem at the Target I work at is the toy dept is run by a toy collector so I cannot hide them in that area plus furniture is out of the question they seem to know where to look

I have trouble trying to fins places but I won't tell where since some in my area do post here also

I hid some figures once at Walmart and they were found I haven't hid anything since But I may have too

i'm pretty sure not ALWAYS, a lot of people find stuff they hide when they return for it. it doesnt help when walmart takes away their lay away plan

I dont agree on this, transformers are mostly made for kids who like to play with them and enjoy them. Hasbro focuses on them mostly and not on most of us. My brother was sorta heartbroken when he couldnt find a optimus primal in our walmart (there were like 3 a few days ago).

A few hours later my brother was opening drawers because he found a penny in one, hoping to find more, and found an optimus primal. I myself do support "hiding", but when you just leave it there and doesnt come back to it is just wrong. Ive hidden one toy, because I was sure that classics grimlock would be gone soon, but now i feel sorta bad because some kid probably wanted it.

Think of the kids. :P

Edit: Im pretty sure I need to get back on topic.

A few days ago A crapload(im guessing they forgot to put them out)of cybertron and classics figures where everywhere. I saw 2-4 grimlocks that day, knowing that before transformers sold out fast. I hid one grimlock knowing that i got my allowance the next day. But right now this is all im planning to hide.

They had a 08 bumblebee there too, and its been there for a week.

I always hear people saying that Transformers are for kids and the like, but if that were the case, why have price points above Voyager. Further what about stuff like the Masterpiece line, and Alternators. They're focused as as much on collectors too.

Keep in mind that those are originally Japanese ideas from Takara, and Takara seems to value their collectors more.

yea, but even if people dont agree and think its about the kids, its really like that, with this movie line i've been going to many stores at opening time, and u see more adults than kids, and who knows they all might be there buying for their kids, but at opening time i see maybe one family with kids at TRU, the rest are just adults, i'm sure some of them are collectors and not buying for kids. i never said it should be like this, with hiding toys, adults buying up most of the tf's and some kids being dissapointed, but sadly it is.

Autobot032 wrote:I really would love to see more understanding people such as yourself. I've learned one thing about fandoms...at their very core is nothing but a bunch of self-serving, selfish bastards.

All of the people I know that have hidden items *do* in fact, go back and retrieve the item for purchase. I've never heard of an account of someone leaving the item and forgetting that it was there, etc.

The people that rally against this are the same ones who are just pissed off because they can't get it and sooner than they'd like (or later) they're going to be beaten to it when it's finally paid for. They just can't fathom the idea that someone else might get what they believe they're entitled to.

They're not entitled to a damn thing. I don't care how much money they make or what their personal stance on the issue is. If they're not there first, it's their fault. It happens to me *ALL* the time, and it will happen again. There's not a single thing I can do about it, except go through another option and get the goodies I want. Whether it's preorder, online stores, eBay, etc.

A lot of those who complain about not bringing enough money are the same type who throw around a credit card like you and I breathe air. They either have the money to back it up, or they're so in debt that it doesn't matter either way if they spend that $10.00 extra bucks. They also look down on the poor like a plague because they want a chance to buy the items too which really, really pisses me off. (that type of thinking's even more selfish)

"I earn my money the hard way, going to work everyday. I make more than you, do more than you, so I'm more important than you and I deserve those TransFormers a hell of a lot more than you, you poor cheap slacker piece of sh*t" is what this comes across as, and even if they don't say it, they think it, and their posts certainly convey it.

As long as the item gets paid for and not stolen (which makes their profits rise, and more items made for selling) is it really hurting you? No. Your impatience is. If you go to "ePay" as you put it, then it's your fault. I didn't go to eBay for Bumblebee. I waited, I saved my money from stupid decisions and in the end I was able to walk into Kohl's and buy him right then, right there.

Follow your own advice people: Be there before everyone else and beat them to it. That way you win, they lose, and the search is over. It'll make you happy and feel warm inside knowing that you beat the rest of us to a toy because you were able to flash your American Express because you work 90 million hours a week, or daddy gave you access to your trust fund.

Not all of us can be so fortunate to just go out at the drop of a hat and buy whatever we damn well please. It doesn't work like that. Oh and a clue for those of you who look down on the poor (and there's at least two posters on here that do, one freely admits it)...nothing in life is guaranteed. Money will be gone sooner or later and when you think you'll never have to ask for help or be poor...ever...heh. Watch, life throws us curveballs every day, and one of those days it might just come your way.

Be a little more patient and understanding with your fellow collectors and people in general. You'd be amazed at what good fortunes (outside of money) might come your way.

You know what would make me laugh the hardest? If kids were the ones beating us to the punch. It's not only justified, but then we'd have a legitimate reason to physically beat you snotless if you got pissed over a kid getting what's actually meant for them. But that's not the case, is it? No.

Even they're getting burned out of this one, and one of the saddest things I heard last week was from a 10 year old boy... "Gramma, why can't I find Bummelbee*? They don't make him anymore do they?" *=and yes, that's how he pronounced it.

Some of the people that hide these items, yeah...they affect the kids, I won't lie, but they don't affect them anymore than you do. If you had the cash and you bought it right there, right off the shelf, you'd walk away from the kid (with a sad look on his face) and go straight for the register and never think twice about it. If the item was put on Layaway, it too would be out of the reach of you and kids, but it's a legit practice and you'd still deny people that as well. Some of these people who do Layaway, and hide...are doing it for their kids, or younger siblings, etc.

At the end of the day, you'll enjoy your TransFormers and whatever else you collect, but at what cost? The kids who really deserve first dibs, and your fellow collectors. You know, if more of us actually gave a damn about other people, you'd see a network of people actually working together, not trying to screw each other over.

The collecting is one aspect, but when you cut right to middle of it...it's just plain old selfishness and it encompasses everything you do in life.

"Fukitol: When life gets you down, take one. When it comes to thinking of, or helping another person, take one. Each pill is a full year's dose of "Kiss My Ass, Loser in a convenient, once a day pill, so you don't have to be troubled with the fact that other people share the planet with you. You deserve this, Fukitol."

Like I said before, find another crusade.

You mean like, endlessly fishing for sympathy through hypocritical tirades? I thought that you held a monopoly on that.

I don't look down on poor people, I look down on poor people who wear being poor like it is some badge of honor, and feel that they have a right to judge anyone who has more than they do. Very Christian of you.

You have no idea what your are talking about, and frankly your whining is getting old. Learn to seperate the words in your head from the words that someone posts. The fact that you are the one who keeps bringing up people's incomes has to do with your own insecurities, no one else's.

The very fact that you consider someone who lives off a trust fund equal to someone who works for their money, means that you have no concept of economics, and therefore aren't worth arguing with about it. I'm thoroughly beginning to enjoy how bitter you are.

Now, back on topic.

I can say this because I don't hide TF's to buy later. If it's on the shelf and I don't have the money I can't get it. Simple as that.

Well I'd like to officially eat my words in front of my fellow fandom. I did not start hiding toys recently to grab later but a fellow board member that lives in my area hid a toy for me since I can't do toy runs at optimum times due to having my twin sons that I take care of during the week. If it wasn't for that fellow seibertronian and I deciding on a "place" for us to hide toys for each other I'd probably never had gotten the G1 deco Starscream. Given my original post I guess that makes me a chump per my own words.

I'm actually a part-time/temporary AR. Usually i don't hide items on my chase list, unless, ridiculous long line-ups, which actually happened to me during my stay in the Bay Area, CA quite frequently. So far, my chases here in Vancouver haven't met my... AR side changing circumstances yet...
