Reign of Starscream: Discussion thread

Postby i_amtrunks » Thu May 08, 2008 6:50 pm

So it has been out official for a few days now, and was also available to many of the people who attended Botcon.

There are no real spoilers to be had here, so type away with entire plot synopsis's if you wish.

"Reign of Starscream 1" is a retelling of the movie Prequel comic and the Movie all from Starscream's perspective. The first issue recaps the prequel and movie, as well as showing Starscream returning to Hoover Dam, where we are given our "to be continued".

Written by Chris Ryall and Chris Mowry, the story is tight and well written, it ties into both the Prequel comic and Movie very well. The script is direct and most of the "dialogue" actually takes place inside of Starscreams head.

Alex Milne or art duties was a splendid choice, he has put detail everywhere, it must have taken him a long time to draw and ink each page, the Movie designs (which I personally dislike) look far superior on paper than the 3d models used in the film. His page layouts are clean and simple to follow.

I was not expecting much from this comic, and bought it fully prepared to feel less than impressed by it (as I was with the Movie Adaptation), and to pass it onto my younger cousins who will lap anything movie related up, but I'm keeping a hold of this one, if the script, page layout and art levels remain consistent for the duration of the series, we will have ourselves a new best series released by IDW.
Awesomesauce; Use it, you know you want to.

Well, I'll have to disagree with you on the movie designs, nothing personal, but I actually liked the movie designs, although it took some time for movieverse Starscream to grow on me, but the other designs I really felt fit the style of the movie. As for "The Reign of Starscream," (I got the subscription, so I actually got mine when it was supposed to be released back in April, but that is beside the point.) I have to say that I really enjoyed it, and finally seeing what happened to Barricade was an added bonus, but I saw the whole Frenzy thing coming by the end of the issue. And seeing a movie style "Ark" and "Nemesis" space cruisers was another added bonus. I really wish a certain non-movie decepticon hadn't bit it so soon, I would have liked to see more of Wreckage, as I personally love that figure, and it would have been cool to see him use his blades. Other than that, I really liked it, and I can't wait for part 2.

Just picked up RofS last night, but couldn't get time to read it. Suprisingly, my husband read it this morning while I was in the shower. He loves Transformers but doesn't usually read comics. I take this as a very good sign. I can't wait to read it when I get home tonight.

Ok Mechabreaker, now I HAVE to get Wreckage. I've been on the fence about that figure, but with the price drop at Target on Deluxe class and knowing he'll be in RofS one at least, I'm making a stop by the store on my way home.

Wreckage is indeed a must-have, he has a cool robot mode, relatively kibble-free and he displays well in either mode.

Actually, the only reason Wreckage is in the thing is because the comic makes reference to the events of the second Target exclusive comic, which details the Decepticon's arrival to Earth (where Wreckage appears only to provide cannon fodder.)

I picked up RoS the other day myself.....and it was as I thought it would be....a re-hash of the movie in readers-digest form, while setting up for the rest of the series marginally. The art is wonderful (although there is no way ANY artist can make the movie TFs look good...with all their bug-faces and all)....It did what it was supposed to do, though...make me wanting for more once I read #1!

I both read RofS and bought Wreckage. I'm not sure I'd know it was him in the comic had I not been told so, but he makes for a nice addition to my movie 'con collection.

As for RofS:

Having Screamer's perspective on things was kind of like having an old freind fill you in while driving to some sort of social event where you don't know any of the people going very well.

I feel up to date and ready for another movie comic, just as long as Starscream is there to hold my hand through it. He's still himself afterall, he's just put on a little weight around the midsection.

Well, it wasn't anything to write home about, but it was mildly entertaining. I guess the movie designs work well for the movie, but not so much on the pages.
