My biggest beef is the eye stalks, but the rest looks... OK I guess? I wonder what Zordon and the Command Center will look like.

Intentional or un-intentional pun? Because that's the first thing that stood out to me, not the eye stalks (which remind me of Mantenna) but the bloody stomach and poor posture.

A Bryan Cranston head in a tube? Or like the heads in Futurama?

I hate to say it, but I'm kinda really wanting to see this.
On the last decade, Power Rangers have gotten very silly (even by the standards set by the earlier sillyness), and this feels like a more serious start.
Of course, I still want that old fan film with Starbuck and Dawson to be made into a film.

I'd say the nosedive into silliness has only really come with the Neo-Saban Era from 2011-onward, since Disney went out on a high note with RPM being one of the coolest PR series ever.Ironhidensh wrote:On the last decade, Power Rangers have gotten very silly (even by the standards set by the earlier sillyness),

I was watching both Dino Charge and the original MMPR on netflix this past year and both seem just as campy and silly but the effects have gotten better. I find them just as fun and enjoyable and even preferred Dino Charge since they didnt have the bullies (who I CAT believe they brought back for Samurai)

Oh, don't get me wrong. MMPR is beyond silly. But over time, the show grew out of that uber camp level into a more cooler range by the time of In Space, then more or less maintained that level through to the end of the Saban Era, then fluctuated between varying degrees of cool and camp during the Disney Era, but ultimately went out strong with RPM. The Neo-Saban Era, however, reverted the show back to being closer to the show's more original levels of campiness seen in the likes of MMPR and (*sigh*) Turbo. Dino Charge made a better effort to get cool again, but ultimately didn't quite pierce the glass ceiling that would put it back on the levels of the post-Turbo seasons.william-james88 wrote:Sabrblade wrote:I'd say the nosedive into silliness has only really come with the Neo-Saban Era from 2011-onward, since Disney went out on a high note with RPM being one of the coolest PR series ever.Ironhidensh wrote:On the last decade, Power Rangers have gotten very silly (even by the standards set by the earlier sillyness),

This trend of rebooting/homaging franchises built around their practical effects with largely CG live action films is getting a bit..... worrisome.
I will see this film, and I'm hoping I like it, but the zord designs are still kinda lame. I do like their presentation of Zordon, though.

You've got to get through the entire Zordon era to really appreciate Bulk and Skull. They started getting way better during Zeo (Then again, so did everyone) and the finale to Power Rangers In Space being easily their greatest moment on screen.

Yeah, of all the original characters, Bulk and Skull were really the ones who had the most pronounced arc to their character growth, even if it spanned across several seasons. They start off as bumbling idiots who think that they're actual intimidating bullies in MMPR season 1, then start a new life goal of trying to uncover the Power Rangers' secret identities (believing that doing so will make themselves famous) in MMPR season 2, then become better citizens when they join the junior police force and work under Lt. Stone in MMPR season 3, and then continue on being cops before they and Stone get fired and open up their own private detective agency with Stone in Zeo...Shadowman wrote:william-james88 wrote:Sabrblade wrote:I'd say the nosedive into silliness has only really come with the Neo-Saban Era from 2011-onward, since Disney went out on a high note with RPM being one of the coolest PR series ever.Ironhidensh wrote:On the last decade, Power Rangers have gotten very silly (even by the standards set by the earlier sillyness),

You've got to get through the entire Zordon era to really appreciate Bulk and Skull. They started getting way better during Zeo (Then again, so did everyone) and the finale to Power Rangers In Space being easily their greatest moment on screen.
...and then get turned into chimps in Turbo and spend the first half of that season pitifully trying to get Det. Stone and other people to recognize them (rather than, you know, grabbing a pen and paper and trying to write "We are Bulk and Skull" or something), but thankfully get turned back into humans by Turbo's halfway point and spend the rest of that season trying to find jobs. And then finally, Bulk and Skull take up an apprenticeship under Professor Phenomenus during In Space, with the trio's new objective of seeking out proof of alien life (which is kind of odd considering every enemy that ever previously attacked Angel Grove was an alien). Bulk and Phenomenus (but not Skull) would even go on to make further infrequent appearances during Lost Galaxy, where the two ran the Comet Cafe aboard Terra Venture. Even later, Bulk and Skull would appear again, reunited, in one episode of Wild Force (the 20th anniversary episode) in which Bulk runs his own little poolside resort cafe called Bulkmeiers.
Across all of this, the two went from jerkish "bullies", to less-jerkish Ranger-admirers, to more friendly rookie cops, to private investigators, to (*sigh*) chimps, to odd job workers, to scientist assistants, to (for Bulk and Phenomenus only) cafe staff members.
And then Samurai and Super Samurai would continue Bulk further by having him be a Samurai enthusiast wanting to train Skull's son, Spike, in the ways of the Samurai (or what Bulk thinks being a Samurai is like), while the Super Samurai finale would reveal Skull to have (somehow) become some kind of a successful rich guy with his own limo.

I've basically accepted that this movie will be another Bayformers for me. I'll watch it once or twice, enjoy it in the moment, and then go back to other areas of the franchise I enjoy more long-term.

The following TV spot makes this movie look FUN:
The rangers actually seem to be enjoying what they do, rather than treating their fighting evil as something so abysmally SERIOUS that it becomes boring. This is the first trailer to give the movie an MCU feel instead of a Bayformers/DCEU feel.
Also, check out what's at the end of this other TV spot:

Well there we go then! A lot of winks and nods in these trailers, right down to Billy doing the iconic head-bob while talking with his helmet on. And that's pretty cool. I still maintain that this movie could suck but I'm increasingly optimistic about it.

Something of note to point out about the glowing effects we see in the diamond shape on both the rangers' chests and the Megazord's chest is that, according to Andre the Black Nerd, who got to visit the movie's filming set in Vancouver, the glowing effects within the diamond shape is the power of the Morphin Grid itself, with the diamond shape meant to be a universe design aspect across the rangers' suits and the Megazord, as a way to show the power that lies inside all of them.
Also, something Billy says in this TV spot sounds like the filmmakers heard some of the initial fan reaction to the suit designs and decided to make a little jab of their own:
