I liked Indy IV ---save for the ridiculous monkey swinging parts he was talking about. That was horrible. The nuke test range scene was cool, but out of place for the movie. He might catch hell from Spielberg for the comments, but ultimately I agree with him

The first movie was supposed to be about Sam and Bumblebee forging a friendship, and meeting the Autobots. Well, they dropped the ball there.
It could've been E.T. with an alien invasion story and it could've worked. It didn't because they did a hack job of writing it.
The second movie was more like G1. It even went with Prime dying, being the chosen one/religious figure. It was loud, it was brassy, and because of this, the critics didn't like it.
Yet, I found it to be thoroughly entertaining and well worth my money.
TF3 better be better than the first two, and it better be worth my money. If Shia can go around and trash talk the franchise that made him a star, he better bring his A game, and they better have a writer worth a damn.
Bay's not blameless, but he has only so much control past a certain point. The writers are just as much to blame, if not more. People seem to forget that.
Ridley Scott couldn't have directed it better, because the writing was soooo bad.
Blame the right PEOPLE, not a single person.

Man, this thread got some epic length posts going on... In all honesty, you just can't debate why the movie sucked or why it rocked. Everyone has a different opinion and preference and you basically hafta brainwash'm in order to see your point of view on something like this.
Its just like radio: We all don't go listening to the rap station screaming out our car windows about how terrible the music is, you just change the channel to whatever you like and if you don't like radio at all, then you pop in a MP3 player/CD/Casette/Whatever and listen to what you prefer.
Although, if you live in the Mass and drive 95 every morning and afternoon, please scream out the window about the music sucking, cause that would be hilarious. LOL

.
Scott would have forced script changes or a (recommended) complete overhaul, or he'd have just walked, he would NOT have filmed or allowed himself to be associated with a film like THAT. Hes like a dictator on a movie set and hes got a lot of pull in Hollywood.
The Bot parts were good, i've watched it again recently and you're right with G1 nods and Primes death etc.. but the script, the dialogue, the hammy, camp acting... it's unforgivable.... hopefully to be amended in some way with 3.
