So much for a free 360

Postby Galvatron628 » Sun May 11, 2008 6:06 pm

So last summer my friend and now former roommate got fed up with his Xbox locking up on him all the time so he went to toys R Us and dropped another $400 on a new one. He then took the old one apart just for the hell of it to see whats inside. He ended up giving me the remains and I put it back together, hooked it up, played it for a half hour with no issues. I then took it apart again today to put some arctic silver on the CPU and GPU just to make sure the thing wouldn't lock up. Things went smooth until I got to the Xclamps: I didn't know what to do! I searched on youtube and found a video of some guy just sticking a screwdriver underneath them and popping them off. So I tried the same thing, and it worked, but one time I slipped and scraped the motherboard. I knew that was probably the death of the 360 right there. Needless to say I went ahead and proceeded with applying arctic silver, and reassembly. I hooked it back up, pushed the power button and.... red ring of death :( Its dead

Not a big deal but I am a little aggravated. I mean I want to get a PS3 and I could care less about a 360, but still it was a free next gen system that I screwed up, and as of now I can't afford a PS3.

oh well, guess I'll just have to sit around and play with my Wii until I can afford a PS3

Well, when tinkering you must always remember these few handy-tips.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

If it is broke, find someone who knows more than you on how to fix it.

and last, and easily the most important.

Always use the handyman's secret weapon: Duct Tape.

well I knew somewhat what I was doing, as I am a PC technician. I've rebuilt, built, torn down, and rebuilt many many computers in my life, so I was familiar with all the parts, just I'm more used to pull a lever back and the Heatsink pop's off. Those X-clamps completly stumped me. I'm still curious as to how you are SUPPOSED to take them off. As a PC-tech I thought taking the X-clamps off via prying with a screwdriver was a bad idea, just because of the risk of scraping the board, but I didn't see any other choice.

Guess I'll just throw this thing on ebay and get what I can get out of it, and put the money towards my PS3. Wii's not bad either, I really enjoy that system, but I just bought a 46 inch Sony Bravia LCD projection TV and I really wanted to see High Definition Gaming at its finest. The Wii only does 480p, which is enhanced definition, not High Definition.

You're supposed to take a pair of pliers and latch onto underside of the tab. Then just bend outwards and away from the motherboard. It will spring up and away. Then just repeat on each until it releases.

I see. That would of made more sense. Too late now though. I'm thinking next month I'm going to go ahead and get a PS3. Would get one now but don't see any bundle deals I like, and I'd rather wait for them to package the DS3 with the 40GB model before I go ahead and buy one.
