I was in the process of posting a response to a heated message to me from Burn concerning something I said about HMW2 last week. I almost finished it but did not post it. I just read the news about OS resigning. I will continue my thoughts on that thread. Anyway, here was my response:



OK... as I said in my previous message: it is not my intent to offend those who are involved in the current process. I am sorry if I hurt anyone's feelings.

Know why you get the backlash? Because you say stuff that's already well known but you say it like you're the first to think it.

This sort of thing has plagued the game for SIX YEARS. You're far from the first to point it out.

Some things I mentioned have, indeed, already been pointed out. However, a software project with the scope and complexity of HMW2 that does not see a release in six years has a very high probability of never being released at all (yes, even as a volunteer project). Historically this has proven to be the case in the software industry (I could go into detail, but will not as it is off topic). This is the reality that, unfortunately, I believe is not being seriously considered or accepted. Six years without a release emits, as we developers say, certain "smells". I will not go into the details here, but one possibility is Fred Brook's "Second System" effect, but again I digress.

I seriously hope I am wrong in this case, as I obviously enjoy HMW. My comments were only intended to help.

As others have stated, it was a decision made by higher-ups to only ever have one person working/coding HMW at a time and that's during their spare time.

Yes, and it was my intent to start a dialogue to reevaluate that decision. You can't fault me for that considering the sorry state of things now. If we all act like mature adults, then we can identify and discuss workable resolutions to past poor decisions without holding a grudge or hurting anyone's feelings. I have made some SERIOUSLY wrong architecture decisions in the past and I understand all to well how hard it is to deal with that emotionally.

But then again, the fact that we all play with toys, read comic books, and engross ourselves in stories of alien space robots might alone disqualify all of us from the "mature adult" category.

Now I know what you're getting at, you've never said it directly but I can read between the lines, you have all this programming knowledge, you THINK you know what the game needs, you think you could fix HMW. I can guarantee you, if the job were given to you, you'd realise just how much of a monumental task it is.

Actually, here is a point where I will be very direct with you and get a bit defensive. Dude, this is what I do for a living. I do indeed realize how big of a task it is. I currently manage 5 developers on a project involving over 500,000 lines of code. Our first release will be deployed in four different countries. Our next release will include more countries and must support two additional languages (Portuguese and French). Oh, did I mention it generates maps? I have worked on numerous software projects using different software development methodologies. I don't just know how to write SQL and Javascript, our application frick'n automatically generates the stuff (and Java too). Got it? I am trying to help you guys out here. I only am sharing this with you all to establish credibility concerning the topic. Otherwise, I would just as well not share this information, as most of you don't give a damn. I am sincerely just trying to be helpful.

Here is the cold reality: If the project is really such a mess and has taken this long, then sometimes the best course of action is to scrap it. Maybe this is the case with HMW2, maybe not. I don't know. Maybe it will be ready next month? I sure hope so. Four of my bots have reached the absolute limit of L4. If there is nowhere else to go, then I might seriously consider joining Galvatron Supreme in retirement. I sure hope it will not come to that. This is my motivation for this topic.

I feel really torn here because I am unable to contribute any significant time to the problem, yet do believe I possess some wisdom that may be beneficial.

I think it is perfectly alright to suggest leveraging the talent pool of this group and to brainstorm a software development process that will fit the realities of the current situation. There is no need for a backlash. If you disagree, then fine. I may be wrong and I am fine with that too. It would not be the first time.

If you could fix it, hey i'd love you to do it! But as a regular ol Moderator it's out of my (and Psychout's) hands.

Now enough of this talk about HMW2. Shut the hell up and go back to fighting ... errr ... in the game!

There I finally have my 100 wins and 200+ points. Hoped to get it done yesterday, but ended up having not such a spectacular day. So I am done for this round since I won't be able to get my winning % back up to where I would like it. Vast improvement over round 1 though.

Not yet. The game itself was to be over at 16:00GMT(i believe[which would be Noon or 11am EST]). Then the scoresheet is locked 2 hours later at 18:00 giving those time to update their scoresheets as needed.

Edit: I need to completely wake up, yeah you were right, it should have been locked about 2 hours ago i think. Psychout quite possible had something come up suddenly, who knows.

That is what I started to do. I sure hope he counts them, because I have had a 6 bout winning streak since the tournament was supposed to end.

Yeah, I have thought about that actually. The problem is there are no L5 missions and my bots won't be able to earn XP unless you are in the arena too. I believe there has been discussion about having the new programmer first fix HMW1, but I am not sure. Let me know when you are getting close to L5 and I'll think about it.

The worst thing about what I posted ... it was before OS' announcement.

The timing was an amazing coincidence to because I was going to talk to Psychout and see if we could do something about bringing you on board even if just to fix up our Mod panel to the point we can get some new missions generated!

So now it's sit back and see what happens.

Just had a quick check of things, by my calculations the tournament should have ended about 8 hours ago. (Provided the time clock converter is right)

Which after going through a few records puts the final arena battle around the 104500-104600 mark. Keep your records seperate and wait for Psychout's final word, until then i'm leaving the score thread unlocked.

Ill be using Burn's estimate of 104600 (thanks dude) as the cut off point, so any result logged with a higher number than that will not be counted.

Apologies for the delay, 'tis the risk of games like this being run by a mere mortal (even if it is me). I hope you all enjoyed the extended 2nd round if the SPL and I ask you to be patient while I go through the arduous task of tabling up to 3,500 results...
