Its true. Little kids have small hands so the most popular characters are always given the "leader" treatment. You will never see hasbro do a new mold of an obscure character in leader scale. (Maybe a repaint like armada megs) With Jetfire being the exception, leader class figures dont scale with anything. They are just oversized figures for kids to enjoy. Theyre not MP figures just because they are the same size. They arent complex enough, nor are they cartoon accurate. They were clearly geared towards kids, not collectors. If some collectors like stand alone figures that dont scale with anything, theyre free to buy into it. But these are for kids. Thats why he is a tank. He has been neutered.

I was gonna mention Jetfire.

But also, all the Animated Leader toys were made to be in scale with the rest and Ultra Magnus was the most complicated toy of that line, or just about.

Also, leaders are always the most expensive option at retail, barring exclusives, so thats another obstacle for parents to get through when thinking of which toy to buy their kids.

OK. I'll bite because this theory of yours is just too interesting to pass up. I honestly don't remember how parents decided to buy action figures in the 80's because I never noticed them in the aisles. Nowadays if I do see Transformers sittin on the shelves those combiner wars and generations are always the first to go. AOE,Robots in Disguise and all the rest just sit there warming the pegs.(I'm not dogging those series by the way.) This leads me to believe that it's us older farts that're buying all the goods-and boy do they go fast around here-or the kids nowadays got some good taste. Why I don't believe it's the latter is cuz I don't know how many times I see parents looking helplessly at the Transformers and suggest getting something cheaper. As opposed to a $45 item (leader class transformer)that's "just a toy." The only time I ever see mom and dad go for the big boxes is during christmas.

That's a way of thinking but may I point out the good Ol' ROTF Leader Optimus? Clearly designed for little timmy.

Image

Also, it's not always the same characters that get Leadered.

DOTM Sentinel Prime and Ironhide, Movie Brawl, ROTF Jetfire, ROTF Starscream...

Also, scale. Leaders never scale with anything? Allow me to present:
AoE Optimus Prime, CW Ultra Magnus, Gen Jetfire, Cybertron Optimus Prime and Megatron ect...

It's your personal opinion. Not a fact. Big figures designed for kids are things like the Ultimate AOE Grimlock and those giant 1 step figures. Also, Prime's Weaponizers.

Also, parents tend to buy little timmy the cheap stuff, not the 70$ figure.

I 1/2 agree with X.

I feel like it's 50/50. 50% of the time they scale with the other classes and are meant to. The other 50% of the time they are stand alone specials. I often refer to these as Buzz Lightyears. The first example I can think of is the giant Cybertron Starscream. Or is he a different class?
Lately though it seems they are keeping them in scale. Definitely in Combiner Wars, with the exception of Thundercracker. He is welcome to stand alone on my shelf though.

I know I'm not the first one to do HasTak comparisons for the new girls, but I personally didn't notice one thing in particular: Takara's Chromia has some shiny United'esq paint on her (mostly only visible in alt mode). Check it out if you haven't noticed before!

You naughty you............... ;)

Guilty as charged! Enabler or whatever you want to call me.

I'm no engineer but on a civilian's point of view, can the features of Leader Megatron be implemented in a Voyager scale?

Apples and oranges but we all remember the Classic/Henkei Galvatron snafu. Everyone was livid on how Galvatron turned out.

Let's be pragmmatic. Voyager=cheaper. Who doesn't want a bargain? But if the added size means extra bells and whistle I'm in!

I've got the Hasbro Leader Megatron already, and I'm excited for the upcoming Takara release in May. It simply looks the most G1 cartoon accurate, period. Plus, Takara went with a nice BIG tampograph of the Decepticon sigil for Megatron's chest instead of the smaller one Hasbro used. Hasbro again is aiming for toy accuracy while Takara goes for screen accuracy. Be happy with whichever is your priority in your collection.

That said, I think an interesting take might have been to do the tank with the green and purple camo deco from G2, while all the robot parts were done in G1 cartoon colors. You could break up the "bland" silver and black with some green and purple plus have an "accurate" alt mode for the character, while keeping with the classic robot mode look. Too bad Hasbro already retooled the mold as Armada Megatron, though. Maybe someone could attempt a kitbash between the two?

Personally, I plan to Buy the Hasbro version of Tank Megs. I do hope Reprolabels come with a sticker set that will make him really G1 toy accurate.

As for customising a Tank Megs for being G1, you'd need a (scrap) GDO Megatron just for the head. I duddo if the head would be too small though. Then, it would be just a matter of repainting the guy, and maybe modding some parts to give him the huge pointy chest plus the possibility to attach the cannon on his right shoulder.

Meanwhile, I'll use my Repro'd GDO Megs as my modernized G2 Megs.

Karnabat, I think you missed my point. I would like to see a "Composite Megatron." Fully G2 alt mode, with paint apps to match, but the robot inside is G1 Megatron as much as possible, including silver and black in all the right places, with the only pallet difference being the green and purple tank kibble that shows up in robot mode.

That... would be a interesting custom to make. I may be up to it but only if I can find a Leader Megatron for cheap... twice. Unless there is tons available, enough for clearance sales to happen, it may be just impossible.

Well, I have the Hasbro version somewhere stuck at a local import shop. But wasn't going to go for the Takara version.
I think he has a little to much silver/grey. The red breaks that I'm naked thing.
Personal opinion anyway.

As for the fembots limited release, why would you buy more than one? Resell?

As for the size wars, I'm on that bandwagon!

I hate it with the movie line. I love Leader Sentinel Prime, and ROTF Megatron looks great, but AOE has everything voyager sized (I also have that huge-backpack Takara Prime to go better with Galvatron & Lockdown). Evasion Prime's great!
But you can't put voyager Ironhide next to him, the deluxe is way to small. Brrrr. I hate being so bitchy about size.

But a leader just kicks the hell out of a deluxe :BANG_HEAD:

I hate it with the movie line. I love Leader Sentinel Prime, and ROTF Megatron looks great, but AOE has everything voyager sized (I also have that huge-backpack Takara Prime to go better with Galvatron & Lockdown). Evasion Prime's great!
But you can't put voyager Ironhide next to him, the deluxe is way to small. Brrrr. I hate being so bitchy about size.

But a leader just kicks the hell out of a deluxe :BANG_HEAD:

If you want a scale-accurate movieverse display, you have to start with a voyager sized Optimus Prime. Scale the rest of the characters to that as you see fit, and you won't have problems with undersized villains like DotM Megatron or The Fallen. The only leader you will need is Jetfire, and he should be towering over the rest of the cast anyway.
