nah, it'll probably be aimed at the really young kids and be more educational and stuff.

Plus K-9 gets a whole new CGI make-over.

Yeah the "old schooler" in me screamed.

Funny how I can accept characters changing in looks in Transformers but the minute they try to change something DW related I go all stubborn.

I'm mixed on new designs of old favorites. If done well like the new Cybermen I'm OK with it as they are still instantly recognisable but something like the new movie TF's is going way too far as everyone but Prime looks nothing like their original form.

Yeah, we need to keep this thread going before those Trek losers overtake us.

And let's face it, DW is infinitely superior to ST.

Found this on another forum, take it with a grain of salt like always.

BBC considers Doctor Who movie

Ben Dowell
Wednesday October 3, 2007
MediaGuardian.co.uk

Doctor Who: Tranter 'would not rule out a film version'

The BBC controller of fiction, Jane Tranter, has left the way open for a movie version of Doctor Who - despite film adaptations of existing BBC dramas not being part of her new strategy for BBC Films.
Ms Tranter told MediaGuardian.co.uk that the move of the BBC films department from central London to a new base inside BBC Television Centre was designed to "cross-fertilise" film production with the expertise from the comedy, natural history and news and current affairs departments.
"This move is not about making feature films about things that are on the television - those ideas are staring us in the face already and may seem too obvious," Ms Tranter said.
However Tranter pointedly refused to rule out the possibility of a film version of Doctor Who, the department's most successful drama series of recent years.
"I would not rule out a film version of Doctor Who, no," she said.
This could see a follow-up to the two previous Doctor Who movies: Dr Who and the Daleks, and Daleks - Invasion Earth 2150AD. Both of these films starred Peter Cushing as the doctor - a part he never filled for television.
Ms Tranter also hinted that actor David Tennant, who plays the current doctor, was likely to return to the role for a fifth series, even though he has agreed to play Hamlet for the Royal Shakespeare Company next year.
His decision means that the fifth series will not be shown until 2010, two years after the fourth series airs next year, effectively creating a "gap year" filled by three Doctor Who specials starring Tennant and overseen by head writer and executive producer Russell T Davies.
Ms Tranter also refused to be drawn on speculation that Steven Moffat was being lined up as a replacement for Davies - who is believed to be on the verge of leaving the show - or that actor James Nesbitt was being lined up take over from Tennant.
"All we can say is that David is a fantastic doctor and that he is doing Hamlet," she said.
Doctor Who's last series ended in July with 8 million viewers, a 39% share of the audience.

Is it Time(lord) for a Doctor Who movie?
It has been tried before with not a great deal of success, but BBC bosses have left the door slightly ajar for a Who film.
October 3, 2007 11:10 AM
BBC Fiction boss Jane Tranter has pretty much ruled out making feature films based on the best of BBC drama - except for Doctor Who. What would you think if BBC Films decided to make a big screen tale of the Timelord?

Well, it might be an idea to know who will be in it and writing it. The Beeb first has to sort out once and for all whether David Tennant will return for series five once he's finished playing Hamlet on the RSC stage.

Here's hoping the indecision of the Danish Prince, or indeed a taste for live performing, won't rub off on him too much. He's brilliant. The good news is that I got the distinct impression from speaking to Tranter yesterday that he will come back. Other BBC sources have suggested this to me as well.

But what about Billie Piper, currently playing TV's Belle du Jour, getting off her scented couch and returning as companion Rose as the News of the World recently reported? This may sound like sacrilege but I preferred Freema Agyeman's character Martha (minus those pained I-am-romantically-in-love-with-the-Doctor looks she had to flash two or three times an episode). There are rumours that both will be coming back. Some people - and papers - have even talked about James Nesbitt taking control in the Tardis but I have it on good authority that he has no intention of putting himself forward. Like most people, he probably can't imagine a better Doctor than Tennant from the current crop of British actors, but you could well disagree.

But before a decision is made about a film, the direction of the show certainly needs to be sorted out, as does the creative leadership of the series. Will Russell T Davies, the series' effective show-runner, stay on? And if not, will his write hand (see what I'm doing there?) partner Steven Moffat step up?

The real question, though, is whether a film would work? Let us forget a minute the fondly remembered but (if you have seen them in the last 20 years) unutterably dated two films starring Peter Cushing. Time has also moved on since Paul McGann took on the role in the 1996 blockbuster BBC/US co-pro that simply looked a bit naff compared with the crop of great US sci fi dramas around at the time.

Now the Doc is back, and bar the odd sabbatical, for good. It looks brilliant...is brilliant. But would a film be one step in the space time continuum too far?

Yay that he is possibly returning.
Bullshit about the 2 year gap..

Doctor Who is extremely popular right now, would it be wise to pause the series for 2 years even though they would fill it with "specials"..
Not a sheeple.
Think for yourself, don't let the magic TV box and social media do the thinking for you.
Question EVERYTHING!!
Just because you have a youtube review channel doesn't make you special.
I look forward to attending a Botcon soon only to settle matters with several idiots in person (yes this is a threat).

Great news that Tennant might be staying for a fifth season(best doctor out there, imo); but the two year gap would SUCK big time. But I'd have to say I'm willing(well... begrudgingly, lol) to wait a while for another season of Tennant as the Doctor.

Funny you should mention that; when I read the bit about there being a gap in the season the first thing I thought of was Lost.

In case you don't know, ABC decided they wanted to milk the series for as long as possible, so they decided to make the seasons for it half as long when the writers told them that their master plan for the series put an end to it in two seasons' time(and wouldn't agree to stretch it out with padding). So now we have to wait twice as long to see half as many new episodes.

I watched the series 3 finale of Doctor Who last night on Scifi and for all the things I've read about it, it was actually pretty good. Sure some things didn't seem to make sense (like the part before ending that I'm not going to spoil for anyone who has yet to see it) but once I started thinking, things made sense again. I really liked it.

I was never a big fan of Martha but I liked her part in it. Now I can't wait for Torchwood tonight. lol

Hey, a 2 year gap with a few specials is a heck of a lot better than the previous 16 year gap with only "Dimensions in Time" and the American movie to fill our screens.

BTW, Rex Narcos, if you want to see cheesier effects check out "The Web Planet". LOL

So I was just informed on another forum then when it comes to Doctor Who the target audience is 10-13 year olds and that I was "supposed to leave your 'adulthood' and watch like a big kid, just enjoy the ride."

10-13 .... someone can verify my belief that this guy (and unfortunately it seems the rest of the DW fans on that particular forum) is a complete and utter idiot yes?

To be fair, maybe he's watched RTD era "Who." On occasion, it can seem like it was intended for 10-13 year olds.

Just to let you all know, Kylie Minogue is indeed in the Christmas special. There was a pic of her and Tennant in costume with a small article about how the staff went out with her afterwards for drinks in the TV Times. Don't know if that's been confirmed before, so I thought I'd share.

It was confirmed a while ago, there's been photos of her in costume and everything.

Next few months will unfortunately be Kylie overload. Her new single is out, her album is out November 24, she'll no doubt come back to Australia for the ARIA (Australian Recording Industry Association) Awards where they'll make some award up for her, and then she has Who.

Anyway, can someone help me retort to this git on this other forum? This was his response.

Nope Doc Who is primarily a kids show, we adults may enjoy it and Nuwho has widened the audience - particularly with more women watching, but it is historically a kids show and still a family/kids target. SJA is aimed at little kids, Torchwood is designed for adults.
Who began as an educationals show for kids concentrating on science and history.

Think I might just abandon that forum anyway, i'm only there for the DW conversation and it's populated by a bunch of people who think they know everything or find something sexual in nearly every scene of DW. :?

According to Wiki it did start as an educational show; however there's no source and it seems to contradict the paragraph before it(which IS cited); so something tells me that's not exactly reliable... Perhaps this guy read Wiki and took it as fact without a source?

As for it being a kid's show.... well, I'd say he's pretty right on about "SJA"(Sarah Jane Adventures, correct?) and Torchwood; and Doctor Who DOES seem to try to keep it more "family friendly" to an extent; but to say that it's a kid's show(and is geared towards them) just seems idiotic. I say just forget about the guy.

Ah well. I hadn't heard any confirmation on her, so I thought I would post.

As for that fool, SJA is aimed at kids. Torchwood is aimed at adults (I would be surprised if it wasn't  ) and Who is aimed at a family audiance. That means there are some adult themes in it, people die (sometimes grizzly deaths) and it is more mature than anything that would be shown on CBBC (usually, though some of RTD's Who certainly wouldn't be out of place there), but it is still suitable for the whole family to watch. I don't know if it started as an educational show, I think I heard one of the staff that worked on the original say it was initially during a documentary on a Who night, but needless to say, it evolved beyond that.

Well when you think about it, her album will be out for a month when she appears so she'll be near the top of the charts around that time.

Appearing on the DW christmas special gives her more exposure, plus given how popular she's liable to be at the time will mean DW may pick up even more viewers.

It's a win-win situation for both parties, with the non-Kylie fans losing big time.
