The Hub Revises Fees For Animation Fare

The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that The Hub which is a Hasbro/Discovery venture changed the fees they charge for animated programing on the station.

The Hollywood Reporter wrote:The Hub launched in October and has so far not made a big splash in the ratings against established kids players, such as Nickelodeon or Cartoon Network. Discovery and Hasbro executives have repeatedly said that the former Discovery Kids channel, much like Discovery's venture network OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network, which has seen increasing investments from Discovery, will need time to find an audience.

The Hub pays license fees for content, and Hasbro Studios, which is owned by Hasbro, is a provider of "a significant amount of the content" that plays on The Hub, according to Drew Crum, analyst at Stifel, Nicolaus. Among the Hasbro Studios shows on the network are Transformers Prime, My Little Pony Friendship is Magic and G.I. Joe Renegades.

The Hub hasn't made as big a splash in the ratings as executives had hoped. Which may lead to weaker performing shows getting the lower fee. The rest of the article can be found by clicking here.

Maybe its not getting good ratings because most of the programming on there sucks and not many people know about it

I also think this channel could benefit if it was HD. Which it is not, here in Colorado at least.

Well it definetly is in the U.S., Prime looks amazing in it.

Maybe it needs better advertisement, I've never seen it anywhere except on the boxes of transformers. I just care about Prime being on...it'd be just as cool if it was on Cartoon Network, it would feel good to watch that channel again. G1 is nice though.

I don't normally get The Hub but I know I would be watching it if I had it. I did get it for free for a weekend and I was there a lot of the time that I was watching TV. Just wish I got it.

I'd have to pay extra to get The Hub, just getting basic digital cable here, and while I'd def watch it if it was in my current channel lineup, I wouldn't pay extra just to have access to it.

I just want decent cartoons to come back to TV.

Seriously. The whole cartoon world has been in a downward spiral for year.

When I was younger a good day involved the following shows being aired:

Berfore School:
Transformers RID

After school before homework: (Toonami block)
Outlaw Star
Gundam (Wing and later on G)
Tenchi
Dragonball Z (Before the series started to suck)

Now we have a large pile of crap for shows on TV. everyone is cheaping out on making decent shows and I just can't stand to watch CN and other cartoon based networks anymore.

Haven't had time to really watch Hub, but I'm hoping they can pull through by making decent cartoons. One of these days, I'll sit down and watch all of TF Prime.

Those live action shows, older toddler cartoons & live game shows is whats really dragging the Hub network downwards.

( 1) those live action shows might have been decent in their day. but they suffer from being run thru the repeat mill over & over. plus their extremly outdated & corny. no one's gonna watch a live show on the hub they've already seen a billion times already elsewhere.

Simple fix,get rid of all the live shows on the Hub & replace them with newer sitcoms shows from the year 2000's & middle 1990's.

Also create a few reality shows for adults & air them at around 8 pm to 11 pm. NO NOT FAMILY REALITY SHOWS THOSE ARE AWEFUL. more in the vein of another jersey shore but call it california shore with 4 young guys & 6 young girls.

(2) Get rid of all those older toddler shows from the 1980's thru 1990's & replace them with the years 2000's toddler shows.

(3) the hub defeinately needs to get some role play teenage themed cartoons. because this is all the buzz now & is popular with kids these days.

(4) get rid of all those horrible, cheesy live game shows. because their so outdated.they belong in the late 1980's/early 1990's. replace them with japanes robot anime cartoons that never aired on american cable/television/syndicated networks before.

That is an awesome idea. I want to see Robotech all over again :D Although I have no idea if that fits your criteria.

Hasn't found an audience? Needs to restructure some of their shows due to money?

Nooo.... say it isn't so?

Gee, I wonder what would've caused this??

Oh, I know... Putting it on the most expensive tier of satellite and cable systems and providing it in HD on only certain systems, plus having no advertising on basic or digital cable tiers beneath it doesn't help matters much.

The network could compete with Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon if it was shown on lower tiers.

They have no one to blame but themselves.

To be honest,Discovery channel was pretty obsecure & un-noticeable before hasbro partnered with it & changed it to the hub.

I think picking a obsecure network to partner with was A HUGE mistake on hasbro's part.

It's been less than a year since it launched, right? How much time did they expect to find a footing?
Not caring about scale since 1984. Just like Hasbro.

On what planet is Discovery Channel obscure?
It is one of the oldest and best known cable networks with several spin-off networks.

Discovery Kids, was obscure, I'll give you that.

All I can say is what worked for Cartoon Network, when they made their big rise, was a large push of Japanese animation. They had a lot of material from which to draw, and all it needed was voice over work. That is a LOT cheaper than creating new content. Once they found their footing CN started creating their own content, a lot of which was fun and clever, like Dexter's Lab, Space Ghost Coast to Coast, and Samurai Jack.

Hub is pushing older shows, but mixed with a lot of new (read expensive to produce) content.

I agree, TVLand has gone down the tubes with all that reality TV. Reality shows are the scourge of television.

Eh, I think it'd be a bit better if they'd show something...more...interesting.
They have about 4 shows which is really two since they're the same thing (G.I. Joe and TransFormers) that I occasionally watch, most of the day-time stuff looks pretty dull to me. Maybe it's the selection though, a few more cartoons would be interesting though I have none particularly in mind.
