The Pokémon Discussion Thread

It seems to skip a generation for me. Gen1 and Gen3 were awesome and original, where Gen2 and Gen4 were lackluster and cluttered with retcon evolutions. I've seen the sprites for Gen5 already and they seem to fall into the "not that great" category, even if most of them are original.

That being said, does anybody here like realistic or even semi-realistic Pokemon? I recently penciled and colored my idea of what a Gulpin may look like in real life if anybody wants to see.

Bzuh... So bored. I'm in limbo at the moment as far as video games go, and I have nothing better to do than lurk around the boards while I wait for White and Dragon Age 2.
I'm taking a break from my manga translation project too, which has led me to practice translating on some Pokémon doujinshi. You know, because I'm into all that shipping garbage which everyone loves to make fun of...
I'm going to share a page with you now, so forgive me for being so bold. It is not often that I am.

Yeah, I have thing for Steven and Cynthia as a couple. This whole book is so cute as well. If you want to know how embarrassing it looks for a near thirty year old man to gush over fluffy comics like a schoolgirl you need look no further.
Yeah... So uh... Everyone getting their shiny beasts from Nintendo WFC?!

And with that post I realized just how far behind I was on localization names.
This is probably THE most fanservice-y cast in Pokemon History. And the female lead is most likely legal this time around, much like we had discussed in another thread. And Cynthia is back. So that's cool.
EDIT: To help the uninformed catch up on English names like me:
Professor Aragai -> Professor Juniper
Makomo -> Fennel
Bel -> Bianca
Cheren -> Cheren
N -> N
Geechisu -> Ghetsis
Dent, Pod, and Corn -> Cilan, Chili, Cress
Aloe -> Lenora
Arti -> Burgh
Kamitsure -> Elesa
Yacon -> Clay
Fuuro -> Skyla
Hachiku -> Brycen
Shaga -> Drayden
Iris -> Iris
Shikimi -> Shauntal
Giima -> Grimsley
Caitlin -> Caitlin (Already named in GenIV)
Renbu -> Marshal
Adeku -> Akuma Alder
EDIT: and also:
Touya/Black -> Blair
Touko/White -> Whitlea

Tepig. I was starting with Tepig the moment I realized it was a pig that can cook itself. Ignite my enemies AND make itself into delicious bacon? Tepig, you are all right with me. Also, space permitting, I will name him The Baconator. Also my team will include Buffalon, (it's a Buffalo with a freaking Afro!) and I'll probably get some help to import over my Lopunny, Gardevoir, and Palkia from Platinum. And then Zekrom will fill out the rest of my team.

And the language thing is understandable. It's also pretty cool that they try to make the Legendary names universal to all languages.

Thank god those names won't be used in any other kind of media.
Also, I will have the game in exactly 22 hours 44 minutes.

I might, if I'm both extremely lucky and extremely crafty.
No, I'm not planning a daring heist of a local Gamestop. That's crazy, you're crazy for even thinking it...

In the past they've done a number of things with the unused player characters.
Gold(Ethan) and Crystal(Kris) had a small appearance as characters in a special, under the completely new names Jimmy and Marina.
Silver had a silent cameo appearance, having just beaten Gold(Jimmy) with a Nidoking.
Diamond and Ruby had cameo appearances, battling each other in the battle tower.
Soul(Lyra) appeared in the anime with her correct name for a few episodes, to remind viewers that Johto exists, and to go buy Heart Gold/Soul Silver immediately.
And I believe that's it so far. So if they do appear, however briefly, I can't see them using those names because... They're awful. Though I suppose it's possible they might, but I don't see it happening myself.

And the wild Pokemon music... Every time I get a new game I've forgotten how ridiculously high the encounter rate is in these games. Caves and water can be a real nightmare.
*Jumps onto water*
*Random encounter*
*Turns left*
*Random encounter*
*Takes a step forward*
*Random encounter*
I swear, that happens far too often.
Anyhoo, I'm 60 hours in now and just finishing up the Battle Subway.
Did a little online battling yesterday and got my ass kicked. Out of 11 matches, 3 wins, 7 losses, and 1 draw.
Terrakion has a crazy high attack stat. I lowered its attack stat two stages and it still almost OHKOs my Gyarados. I wish the Japanese players wouldn't use so many legendaries... And there's practically nobody else using the random battle feature either. Just me and a horde of them...

I still haven't bred a good one yet, but I can see it possibly being a staple of my team in the future. But what to name it? Jim Duggan?

Yeah, did they jack up the encounter rate or something? I mean, it was pretty high in previous games, but this time it's is just obnoxious. I'm actually buying Repels now, and lots of them.
I don't know if nostalgia is clouding my mind, but I could've sworn I was able to get through whole rooms/floors/routes with only a few encounters. The areas may have been smaller, but i definitely know I was able to get that random item in the grass over there WITHOUT 3+ wild Pokemon jumping out.
