I'm starting to wonder if there's a point to this thread any more as it seems to be little more than memes being posted.

Also, the memes are pretty much the point of this thread. It's like the "awesome pose thread" but with a Pretender topic.

bodrock wrote:Then again, my love for this hobby does not come primarily from arguing over the mythos or ethos of Transformers, but rather the enjoyment I get out of the toys themselves. I'm sure you and anyone who visits this topic feels the same -- so why not get us back on topic instead?

To me, the discussion ran its course, and the thread turned into nothing more than memes and it just became the same thing over and over. It wouldn't surprise me if others have come to feel the same way.

Except we're in the "Transformers TOYS Discussion" sub-forum so ... yeah. Fail.
bodrock wrote:Well, hold on a minute Kanra! We should establish what makes a Pretender a Pretender, and not just another pretender pretending to be a Pretender.
To me, a Pretender is...
-a robot inside an organic-looking shell disguise; even Sixshot can't do organics!
-innerbot transforms into their Cybertronian alt mode(s)
-humanoid or beast shells only, unless they also transform (ultra, mega)
-shells enhance abilities significantly
Any other basics they should share? Do you think I'm being too strict on the meat-bag requirement?
Otherwise, they're just like all the rest, imho.
-Kanrabat- wrote:Also, both of those guys... Are basically Action Masters riding vehicles.

Try saying that 5 times fast
Should the Crossformers Black Shadow and Blue Bacchus be counted towards Pretenders? I'd say not really, as the whole idea behind Pretenders seems to be them "becoming" something they can normally never be, either organic instead of robotic, or a totally different vehicle than what they normally transform into. The Crossformers fall more in line with the "upgrade suit" thing.

bodrock wrote:Did the Crossformers do so too? Or would the innerbot always be in their shell? I might know if I'd watched Victory.
bodrock wrote:I really gotta watch Victory now! Maybe after I'm done with Beast Wars. But yeah, if the Dinoforce was simply Takara's version of Monstructor, they count as traditional Pretenders, I'd say. Which reminds me -- I'd like to have all the Pretender Monsters as well! But I would not say no to the Dinofarce. If I'm being honest, their shells look pretty good -- the Pretender Monsters are a little cooler to me, but they were probably designed by the geniuses who gave us Octopunch, Stranglehold & Bludgeon -- so YMMV.
I'm definitely down with the "weird" alt modes these days -- especially for the Pretenders.
