Hype is a terrible thing (for a games reference, look at happy games and no man's sky. They promised the universe and delievered...a pond in comparison).

I love your no man sky analogy for Hype.

But for Luke, I know I didnt expect a super insane light saber fight with him being ultra athletic. With Force Awakens being a call back to A New Hope I expected this to be a call back to Empire (which it is at times) and Luke to take the role of a wise and powerful jedi isolated from the rest of the Universe, as Yoda was. Yoda was a puppet, you cant get more limiting than that for an all powerful jedi master. And yet, they made it work in Empire. We could have seen Luke's incredible power in a similar way, he didnt have to be in incredible shape. He could have pulled the spaceship from underwater. I mean, might as well if you are going to show it to us.

The funny thing here is that when force awakens came out people didn't like the fact that it cut too closely to elements of the original trilogy (mostly new hope but with sprinkles of the others here and there) and say they wanted different...the phrase be careful what you wish for certainly rings true at this point. Disney listened, as did rian johnson and they went very different with the last jedi. So they got lambasted for it. Apparently, everyone wants a star wars movie but what is a star wars movie? It seems that it's something that the original creator and the fans can't agree on.

I disagree, what Rian Johnson did is the opposite of what people expected, which is just as unoriginal. Ray's parents being nobody, her not getting training on the island, the jedi master books not helping, Snoke not being the villain, this is all just the reverse of something expected, not a venture into something new. What really sucks about this is that it makes a lot of set up end up being useless and now nonsensical. The entire previous film was to find a map to get Luke, which he had left for his friends if ever they were in need. Now that makes no sense.

There are at least 3 scenes dedicated for the viewer to wonder who Rey's parents are, which is now just wasted screentime. If her parents were going to be no one, then why dwell on it and tease it so much.

The first line of the film is that the First Order is now ruling the galaxy, which right there felt like absolute nonsense when the previous film ended with their giant battle station being destroyed and all of them running off and scattering away. Well, maybe there is a time jump and this film takes plae a few years later. But no, its like 5 mins later, so like what the ****.

As simply a film viewer, I felt i was being trolled by the director (knowing he also wrote it) while watching this film. It was a very unpleasant experience.

I thought the fact they were ruling was down to the first order leadership being sensible enough not to be on a giant battle station with a target on its head and the fact they obliterated the people who were in charge before...and all their subordinates and admin teams etc. I suppose if anything the galaxy should have been in utter anarchy as everyone barring the first order or resistance sitting around trying to figure out how to get back on track, who should represent etc etc. After a calamity like that no one would be able to decide who was in charge straight away. It is one of the many flaws that exist within the film (hey I said I was okay with it and didn't mind it, not that it was perfect and jaw dropping- though the aftermath is jaw dropping...it seems more divisive then talking about the referendum here in the UK!)

Your statement is perfect evidence to my issue, its just us presuming things. You have good points, but its all just assumptions, this movie and previous one) doesnt really inform us of much and leaves it up in the air. Would have been nice to know what the status quo was before it simply going back to a copy paste of the empire regime.

As I said, one of the many flaws. I would like to know why he choose to start it that way but I suspect I wouldn't care for the answer (i really expect it to be a 'it was a good idea at the time thing')

This weeks Poe Dameron comic reinforces the point (told through a conversation between R2-D2 and BB-8) that TLJ follows on directly from TFA with very little gap between both movies.

The First Order obviously have a lot of power behind them, but it still doesn't explain the glaring flaw that is "they wiped out the Republic and are now the dominant force in the galaxy" in the space of a few hours/days.

So i watched this, and it pretty much sums up all my thoughts as well. It really did not have a lot going for it.

Funny, Star Wars and Transformers both had a "the last blank" story in 2017, and both were poorly received.

It wont. At least not financially since it cost way less. Anyways I too preferred the Last Jedi over the Last Knight, at least I saw Luke for more than 10 minutes and the main characters were the jedi and sith as opposed to Mark Wahlberg

Solo has lost $100 million minimum after one month in cinema. I bet that this will not be the same for bumblebee. As in Bumblebee will not be down 100 million dollars one month in.

Has it been said on what kind of problems solo faced then in production? I know what they did to rectify it but ive never known what caused the kick off in the first place.

The ones that come to mind is the director's switch during the production.
Also, most news reported that Alden Ehrenreich, needed an acting coach in order to perform the role more similar to Harrison Ford.

Bob Iger is fully aware of the big clusterslag of Solo ( and the toxic atmosphere KK introduced to Lucasfilm (mainly her pose)! Not to mention how the franchise licensed products are not moving (cough cough Hasbro's SW line as SJWs never evAH buy the patriarchal products geeky nerds who love to objectify the opposite sex continuously support) so KK is by all intents and purposes.......FIRED!

Trouble is, Iger can't find any takers! 8-}

I would imagine such a firing would result in a MASSIVE backlash from "feminists" who would promptly blame the cellar dwelling white man-babies.

Completely ignoring the fact that The Last Jedi may have made money, but it wasn't well received by fans, and Solo just plain flopped. ANY business, when things don't sell/get over, tends to result in someone being fired, normally the one at the top, regardless of gender.

I'm taking that with an extreme pinch of salt as I've only found one story about it so far, something like that would be bigger news. Heck I've found more toxic fandom stories (the very extreme, very much minority ruining things for others)

 still wait and see, if they can explain away solo's performance as an anomaly then I think she'll be safe, I mean there was fan backlash over the tf movies since rotf and paramount kept bringing bay back. Though I wouldn't be surprised if there was more scrutiny.

Perhaps what is best for the future is working out a flexible plan, involving interested directors, getting lucas involved on some level and maybe getting help from authors of the eu books/ and new books.

Oh, and take the sw games licence away from EA. Maybe set up different games with different studios to match the genre. The only sw games I've enjoyed recently has been the lego ones.

There’s a difference between the TF films and the current state of Star Wars though: every TF film has made billions of dollars, even TLK. And as far as division among the fan base, sure there are those who loathe the films, but it’s nowhere near as bad as the divide among Star Wars fans now. And even the critical reviews are consistent; everyone on the planet (aside from Sly *cringe*) agrees that the TF films just big, stupid, fun. TLJ is hailed by critics as the second coming of Jesus, while fan reaction is poor.
And Solo lost money, which is something that the TF films have never done.
