As for most disappointing Transformers, it's hard to say, I generally know what to expect from the figures I order. (And skip the ones that would let me down.)

* I guess AD31 Optimus Prime -- that backpack is terrible. I knew about it beforehand, but it still sucks and maybe in retrospect was an unnecessary purchase.

* I got MP-11 Starscream only in 2017, and after stuff like Ladder Magic, swappable faces, less kibble and so on, he felt outdated. Add to that the issues with the locking. I had thought about returning him, but then I'd have a huge gap in my humble Decepticon cast. He very quickly grew on me. Despite its shortcomings, I actually do like it now.

* And the fact that the Decepticon Targetmasters were done as Headmasters. I got them because I figured they wouldn't redo such obscure characters a second time and overall they're cool toys. But it's still disappointing to have to remove their heads for transformation.

I’m with ya, Densh. We’ve wanted CHUG Dinobots for YEARS, and what should have been as big a deal as Devastator (I know you don’t care for him, but you can’t deny he was an event of a toy release) ended up being Grimlock featuring scrawny dino-babies.

They're not scrawny, I don't get how people see them as such.

Because they’ve got little arms in robot mode. At least Sludge and Slag do. Swoop fares much better in that regard. It’s just my opinion, but the Dinobots are diminutive in stature.

ZeldaTheSwordsman wrote:Also, the Dinobots got a better deal than the Constructicons did. The Dinobots all actually have proper arm articulation.

My Unite Warriors Constructicons would have words.

ZeldaTheSwordsman wrote:And Slag, Sludge, Snarl, and Swoop also have significant added articulation in dino mode. Snarl's forelegs aren't any more articulated, but still.

But they can’t do much with that articulation in Dino mode. It’s a fair point though, they do in fact have added articulation in Dino mode.

Why? These are the G1 Dinobots, not the Animated ones. They have as much barbaric look as the G1s did, no more and no less

The G1 toys for reference.

I don’t want the G1 Dinobots, I want new versions of these characters. The kinds of versions that we might have gotten back during the Thrilling 30 phase when we were getting awesome updates to characters instead of G1 With Knees.

Well then Nemesis Maximo, maybe you should be looking to lines that aren't Neo G1 at their core. :P Besides, Grimlock got in on the crazy reinvention with his original Classics toy, and if you want a bizarre G1-Bayformer hybrid (the look most T30 toys had) Grimlock there's the FoC toy so in his case at least the whole "New versions" angle is already covered.
And hey, your Unite Wars 'Structies are basically G1 With Knees so how come you're not disappointed in them? :P

As a G1 toy and cartoon fan, I'm happy for the shift back to G1-faithful updates of G1 characters. Like, I do enjoy some of the Thrilling 30 toys and some of the Combiner Wars reimaginings. But in other cases I find them very visually "meh" or just off. Same for some of the reinventions in Classics and Universe.

Touché, Zeldaman. I just got caught with a double standard I never even thought I had.

To be fair to the T30 line, would you call that or G1-Byformer hybrid, or just more Gundam-esque, angular Mecha style designs?

Well, it's kinda six of one, half a dozen of the other for me. Has the same effect, feels like it's trying to channel the WFC/FOC-esque G1-Bayformer hybrid art style adopted by the later IDW comics. The Bayformer influence is most notable in the segmented way the mouths are drawn (and that part looks really off to me on them, while it looks fine on actual Bayformers)). Thankfully most T30 headsculpts avoid doing that.

Look, money talks. If there was no interest in these dinobots, then Hasbro wouldnt be releasing a red chest swoop and fans wouldnt already have preordered it. I dont have problems with these toys, they were done fine, especially if we see them as updates to the G1 toys. And the fact that they actually work well as a combiner is something extra that balances out any dissapointment I may have in other areas (like the sizes).

And like someone said, if size is an issue, we can still use these with legends versions of characters for some fun scenes. Thats the beauty of Hasbro making BB, Megatron, Optimus and Starscream all the time in various classes, we have more toys to use for various scales and scenes.

Randomhero wrote:Emiliano Santalucia was given the task of making a design for Galvatron only. He wasn’t told he’d be a headmaster. We’ve seen plenty of this from his other designs that omit the gimmicks such as overlord where overlord straight up had the power masters in him.

He’s not always told the gimmick, just hired to make a new modernized character.

This is what I was on about.

I dont get it, Randomhero just wrote that Galvatron was not initially designed with the head master gimmick. Is that what you were saying too? Didnt sound like it.

Doesnt matter though, what I am trying to say had nothing to do with the development of the toy, it was just about how he could be better. Of all the characters that become headmasters in Titans Return, Galvatron is the only one that really suffered for it, so its a real shame that of all the toys, he actually has space to store a normal head.

Ironhidensh wrote:I'm always amazed at the lack of love for MP Tracks. Yeah, he is one of the weakest post MP-10 molds, but its still a MP.

That quote really reinforces what I was thinking, that there is lack of love for the figure and that its one of the weakest MPs. I expect more from an MP. Also, the early reviews were positive, so its really word of mouth that made the toy's value sink the first year it came out. I find that quite fascinating.

ScottyP wrote:I usually agree with these to some extent but I think these are all poor choices. Maybe Galvatron belongs here. Tracks is also a good toy and I'll repeat here what I said on the podcast a while back - not liking the backpack is 90% likely due to transforming it wrong >:oP

Image

Jokes aside, I dont have any problems with the backpack itself, its more the build and design of the figure. Glad you think Galvatron might belong here, he's the one that others seemed the most out of place, which comes to show how diverse all our opinions are :D

GreenGald wrote:I'd say that a DIShororable #6 would have to go to PotP Starscream. The mold itself was deeply flawed before the revision, it also just didnt feel like a starscream. Even the combiner wars leader starscream i.m.o was just decent. Im really hoping this new siege one will be better. :WRECKERS: >:oP

It will be better, because when you hit rock bottom, the only way to go is up
POTP Starscream is a great example of why I would not have placed him on my list. From the first time I saw him, I had problems. I hated a lot about him, proportions, simplicity. And getting him in hand, I found that he was indeed as lackluster and crap as I thought he would be. So there wasnt much dissapointment. It's not a good toy. I dont think any bad toy should be on my list since this is not about bad toys. Its good toys that could have been so much better! Robot modes for Devastator, a locking neck for roadrage (how that is missing on an MP is shameful), a decent looking head for Galvatron, giving Fort max his own legs rather than Metroplex', decent heels for windblade.... urgh!!! So close to being great toys and yet so far now.

If you all want to see truly bad toys, I have a list for that, and a lot of what people are mentionning is on there: https://www.seibertron.com/transformers ... ime/34791/

All I can say is I think POTP Predaking is good and I am honest. He has a better mix of stability and poseability than any combiner I have ever dealt with, including 3p.

Bucky wrote:Another good list. It’s always nice to see these. I get where most of this list is coming from, but my personal disappointments are different. I think that’s why I like the comments on these lists so much. We’re all part of the same community of collectors, but we’re all divided into these little sub factions, in a way, in terms of what we look for in a toy, what works, or doesn’t work for us, what disappoints us, what’s refreshing, and ultimately what makes or breaks a toy. So I think this list’s subject is very interesting. There’s a lot of different perspectives.

Thanks Bucky, you always know how to sum things up just so perfectly ;)^ And yeah, thats why I didnt bother with honourable mentions, the entire comments section serves as an addition to the list.

I have to say, as much as I love most of Predaking (and agree that he definitely wouldn't make this list), one thing that really does disappoint me about him is the fact that they made the shoulders hinge-then-swivel rather than swivel-then-hinge, so he can't bring his arms out in any direction other than up. A lot of Titans Return figures have that problem, too.

Me thinks it's Ultimate Optimus Prime from Dark of the Moon:

I disagree about TR Galvatron suffering from being a Headmaster. Suffering from alignment and having a fat spring carriage on the mask (that's what restricts his head's turning radius so much), maybe, but not from the Headmaster gimmick in itself. If anyone really suffers on account of that gimmick it's Blaster and Soundwave because of the way the storage for their head partner was designed - you can't store the head and a tape at the same time in altmode, unless the head partner can be put away while still in the neck socket

I somewhat understand that some people don't like TR Galvatron but it's not that bad! The head is not perfect but the rest of the TF is alright.

As for Titans Return Fortress Maximus... I like Titans Return Fortress Maximus... :-x

Thirded on FOC Bruticus. He might be the worst modern-day combiner of them all. Hell, I think taking into account technical and design limitations of the time, the G1 combiners are probably better than him!

Quite. If he was better-proportioned and gimmicked out the wazoo, it would be one thing. But as-is.. ugh. Speaking as someone in touch with his inner child, I would want a toy that big to be more than an autotransforming brick with wonky proportions and only a light and sound gimmick.

Totally agree on Dragonstorm, I was dissapointed too and i never bother with him, even though I got him on sale.

Whats so bad about MP04 Perfect Prime? A ton of people still want that toy since its the only version to come with the that massive trailer.

It half-assed things by not coming with Roller, though, and that trailer is bereft of the workstations the original toy's trailer had and the pilot seat in the repair/gunnery drone is just a dummy. So you can't, say. seat Binaltech figures in it anywhere despite the trailer being nominally designed to go with Alternators/Binaltech toys.

be careful
i have returned mine TWICE.

first one dragon head came off
then the second did the same
with a different head!

:HEADHURTS:

That sucks. I watched the review so I knew about the heads beforehand and was extremely careful removing him from the box. The first thing I did was check for stress marks and sure enough he had them on every head. Such a shame because he looks awesome.

Dragonstorm ought to have had the same sort of effort put in that Armada Unicron and Cybertron Primus had.

The whole damn Last Knight toyline ought to have had some effort put into it. We had what, a good Leader Class Megs, and a couple of good Voyagers in Nitro Zeus and Hound? The rest of the line was made up of redecoes of the AoE Deluxes and the Dinobots, and then Dragonstorm.
Back at it again!

Crosshairs, Hot Rod, and and Drift had substantial retooling. And Cogman, Steelbane, Sqweeks, Skulk, and Barricade were all-new molds.
