In Australia, one of the National Broadcast channels (7) jumped on the Spiderman and Pirates (and Knocked Up) bandwagon, another National Broadcaster (9) jumped on Shrek. Transformers ads were on, but they did not get anywhere near as much airtime as the other summer blockbusters.

It also would have helped if I'd looked at what country you were in. :D

I don't know the last time I saw a movie with such heavy advertising in the U.S. as Transformers.

Pirates of the Caribbean 3 didn't need much in terms of paid publicity: it already had a built-in audience dying to see it. As for how well Transformers 2 is likely to do out the gate, remember last year that PotC: Dead Man's Chest shattered records for best opening ever when it came out. It not only built on the fan base that the original established in theaters but also from what it got after the first movie's DVD release.

Point being: Transformers has a great start on achieving a loyal fanbase, and it's going to get even better once the DVD comes out!
