I feelz this way to. You cannot go grander than Unicron.
You skip city bots who are insanely big and they haven't done a decent normal combiner (I don't count brainless gorilla Devastator who's defeated by 2 minibots and a manmade gun a combiner and that shapeless black vomit demon dude... no)
It's like modern writers are either dumb as a brick, or the studios hold their spouse at gunpoint.
Doctor Strange 2's threat was Wanda inslaving the entire MULTIVERSE, that means not just earth, not just all the planets and known intelligent species that could exist including freaking Celestials. But that times infinity because 1 box from russia who's just a mutant I think has that insane amount of power. Makes you think why she didn't just turn Thanos inside out the moment she saw him.
As a writer you create tension, setups and payoffs. And with sequel movies you gradually raise the stakes, some heroes die, greater villains arrise untill you come to the conclusion of that story/universe with the biggest bad and after that you stop making the damn movies.
It could be (though I doubt it) that this movie is written very competently and intelligent and that it completely fits that Unicron is already shown. Maybe he doesn't reach earth yet, maybe there's something behind Unicron that's an even bigger threat. Maybe earth is f*cked and the good guys lose and somehow they have te rebuild lateron (please.. .. please don't timetravel to negate the epic win of the badguys).
Anyway I'm not going for a fresh, intelligent sci fi story, I'm going for Transformers, fun characters and cool stylish battles. And then buy the mainline toys and fill the cast with studio series if need be.
