Changing the subject.... what a difference a month or so makes. When they first announced the CW Leader Ultra Magnus, I knew nothing of his IDW story line, or that he was just a set of armor and a little dude. So I thought this toy was an outrage. Now I'm all comic book current and UM just might be the non MP figure I'm most looking forward to. I'm skipping Megatron unless I can find him on sale, and I don't want any seekers in Jetfires mold. For my seekers (at least Thundercracker) I'm gonna pick up the iGear Con Raptor mold. Perfect comic book accuracy.

MTMTE Magnus is in my top five characters of the whole comic book series. He is my most anticipated figure, even more than Devastator or Defensor.

I think, based on pictures we've seen before, that they collapse further into the shoulder pads to look less awkward.

Seems to be twofold:
The shoulders are pushed down to fit him in the box
AND
Hasbro stock photographers can't transform the toys well

Who is he combining with, Minimus Ambus? I don't know if him sitting inside, having no visible impact on the outward appearance and function of the toy, qualifies as "combining."

Purely design-wise, yes, it's accurate (more or less). But in the comics he has a blue waist and red thighs, rather than all that white.

They probably worded it this way because Hasbro wants people to think of Ultra Magnus and Minimus Ambus as two independent characters. They said one of the reasons why Ambus can't ride inside in truck mode is so it didn't look like Magnus was just a mech suit when in the comic that's exactly what he is.

He has a firing projectile? I thought all four were fake, which one fires?

I'm guessing it depends on if you include Ambus into the mix or not.

The last G1 Ultra Magnus toy that turned from car carrier into red, white, and blue robot (other than the Masterpiece) was the 6" Titanium figure from 2007. That figure was a floppy mess, and the Masterpiece is in a different league of price, intricacy, and aesthetics. There have been a few White Optimus Primes but this is the first time there has been a proper Classics-style Ultra Magnus.

Still on the fence with this one. I have the TFA version of UM, which I still think is the best made to date. And this one doesn't have a hammer - I thought that was kind of UM's 'signature weapon' now...
