Partsforming is a bit of an art. It can easily be done very wrong, a la our first impressions of Earthrise Arcee. Earthrise Cliffumper's partsforming is borderline, but won me over in the end for two reasons. 1) He can use the back of his vehicle mode as a credible shield. 2) The removable part still stores neatly on his back for a complete look. Arcee's "hoverboard" looks like the back half of a car, period. Hanging off her back, it'll look even clunkier than Soundbarrier, who is probably one of the worst Transformer toys in this century. Characters who "armor up" are fine for partsforming, because the base robot is still a fully functional transforming toy on its own, and the "armor" bits combine to form an accessory for the vehicle or something else, like a weapon or battle station. Earthrise Arcee isn't being "armored up" by the back half of her alt mode under her feet or hanging off her already kibbled back.

It's also easier to embrace partsforming on legacy characters, like Ultra Magnus, where that was his original schtick in G1. Or, on "new" characters like the completely reimagined Brunt, who never had G1 robot mode to begin with. Arcee is not an established partsformer, and unlike Cliffjumper, her use of partsforming is VERY underwhelming, to put it mildly.

Well, I was talking about partsforming in general. I would also like to add the fact that partsforming does mean that it puts TFs at greater risk of losing bits of themselves, so there's that.
Mind you, with regards to characters who partsformed originally, sometimes trying to cut down on the partsforming can actually make things worse. Legends Godbomber suffers a bit from trying too hard to reduce partsforming. And then there's Combiner Wars Silverbolt, who suffers from having to have the combiner kibble built in.

Looking at Arcee, I'm fairly confident that the detachable car aft will be able to fold up into the rest of her backpack rather than dangle behind her legs. Not the greatest, but still better than it could be. I also think there's a chance it will make a better-looking hoverboard when turned upside-down.
I don't know that making her a shellformer for the sake of a pelvis swivel was the best design call, but she at least looks nice and has fully 5mm-compatible hands (and there's the C.O.M.B.A.T. potential). I still plan to get her. She won't supplant T30 Arcee, of course, but she's got enough going for her to make a fun complement.

Would Energon Arcee count? Movie 1 Arcee also has some slight feminine features, Prime Arcee is also there... Ok, let's extend that challenge by excluding motorcycles.

Why in the nine hells did I forgot about the bike girls?
Energon Arcee is just perfect while Prime Arcee cheat a bit with her gaz tank wings but I can forgive her.

All the rest suffer the syndrome of the action figure hiding under a shell. All Windlades hide under her jet mode and RID Strongarm is a guy with a head-swap.

The real challenge would be to make a car or a truck change into a "hot" fembot without shellformer cheats. Because even the guys are guilty of this. Mostly movie bots but still.

I mean, if you want to talk about perfect character for Arcee to be retooled into then you really don't have to look any further than Cybertron Thunderblast.

Image

She would make a fantastic addition to the Decepticons and she wouldn't need a detachable "hover board" to make the shell work.

An updated version of Thunderblast with a shell that could compact better would be really appreciated.

G1? Like Galaxy Upgrade Optimus Prime and Selects Hot Shot? They already got the Cybertron ball rolling with those two figures. Plus we've had plenty of new G1 characters (some newer than others) like several Battle Masters, Ironworks, and Barricade. No reason why Thunderblast wouldn't fit in as a transplant into G1.

I just noticed something with Scorponok. I can't really see any of the little blast effect pegs, so maybe the only way to connect bpast effects to him is going to be the 5mm ports. While not a huge down side for me persoanlly as I don't tend to use the effects on Omega because he's not central part of my Siege display, it's still disappointing that he doesn't have that option

@zelda probably the mandibles look odd to me because the lack of the cthru visor (which whilst it's nice robot mode doesn't have it, I kinda like it in scorp mode on the original).
The scorp feet definitely don't look splayable but the feet look to fold for transformation rather than posing.
Trypticon kind of got his bits from third party as radar dishes etc were included with the toyhax labels.
Not sure I'd be keen on scorp holding his shoulder guns as a a hand weapon as he would be then missing any shoulder guns and my complaint is that he is missing some in the first place (articulated shoulder guns aside) :)

Hopefully we see better pics soon.

Fasttrack is insta-bought. He looks bob-on.

Sky-Lynx looks amazing. This is what we should have always have gotten instead of the CW one. As I'm already not going to be buying many ER figures I MAY be ale to justify the cost of his Commander price point.

Arcee. She's a mixed bag for me. She's looks good for the most part, but I can't forgive the choice made for the rear section of the car. Had we not had T30/Legends version, I'd buy this one and just loathe that one part of her. If they give her a minty green repaint as the Paradron medic, I'll pick one up.

Scorponok. Bozhe moi. No. Nope. Nyet. Nada. I expected more than just an upscaled, more articulated version of the G1 figure, with even less gimmicks than the original. Why the hell does this not have an actual chest cavity for a cockpit/command center for the titan master, especially when taken into account that this (assumingly) doesn't have the moving scorpion leg gimmick, which the G1 had and still had a chest cockpit. The only think I like about this is the double headmaster unit, and that is in no way enough to for me to warrant purchasing this.

A very nice, feminine figured Arcee. No partsforming needed here.

3rd party figures have a few non-partsforming deluxe Arcees. I know we're talking about official figures here, but it CAN be done.

I wouldn't have minded the parts forming if it wasn't so egregious. Or if the hoverboard looked like a hoverboard. There's a 3rd party Arcee called Motobot who's all about partsforming. But her parts assemble into sick guns! She remains one of my favourite figures.

Nope, and there's a funny story about that.

Back when Takara pulled out the G1 Fortress Maximus mold for its Encore release, they found the Grand Maximus Pretender shell along with the main toy mold, and eHOBBY wanted Fun Pub to do a full blown reissue of Grand Maximus. But, that kind of a toy release wouldn't have been realistically marketable for Fun Pub (even if it might have ended up being cheaper than what the original G1 release went for at the time on the secondary market), but they did, at least, end up using the Pretender shell in the Figure Subscription Service for Double Pretender Megatron.
So do you think that Takara's reluctance to reissue Grand Max back then is still present, despite the potential demand for a properly sized Black Zarak? Besides a new head and deco, how else is Black Zarak different from Scorponok?
The thing is, Takara likely didn't do an Encore Grand Max because the Encore Fort Max sat around in vast unsold quantities at online stores for many years. Some places even still have the figure for sale to this day.

I'm in agreement with Wolfman Jake's argument concerning parts-forming. It's understandable on a character like Ultra Magnus, where he's donning armor, but the base figure still transforms. Transformation is at the core of what these toys offer as their primary feature, and to omit that is omitting the raison d'etre of this franchise. The transformation aspect is what fascinates me, and keeps me collecting. If I wanted action figures with snap-on armor to effect disguise, that's what I'd buy, but I don't. I want integrated transformation that permits elements of the figure to rearrange into another cohesive form via mechanical means without the need for removal and reattachment of parts.

Respectfully, the argument that Earthrise Arcee's shell/parts-formation was necessary to enable waist swivel doesn't convince me, as MMC's Azalea has perfect transformation coalescing her car fenders into her shoulder pods, while maintaining the waist swivel. It's certainly doable. I don't share the optimism that her 'hoverboard', as it were, integrates into the transformation. It'd be a slight improvement, but it's certainly going to add considerable bulk to her backpack if it does, or if it at least snaps onto the backpack, given that it doesn't appear to collapse into a smaller form. I think Takara just gave up on this design, and went the simplest route by making her a nice looking action figure with basically a hinged hoodie and 2/3 snap-on alt mode. To my eye, little to nothing of that robot mode becomes a car, and you could easily remove the top of her backpack, join it to the lower half, and have a complete stand alone car and robot, as neither mode requires anything of the other. As an action figure, she looks really good; as a Transformer, I fear she fails. Perhaps I'm wrong; I hope I am, but I remain dubious.

I'm so happy to see Sky Lynx Splits. That is fantastic.
Arcee's robot mode looks pretty good, except for the flying bougie board. I wish they could have found something better to do with it. The vehicle mode looks decent for the most part/
I am loving the Scorpinok. Someone else mention making the head's face a different color, and I agree I think it would look better that way.

Eff me, I love the Earthrise models of Megatron and Smokescreen after I bought all those Siege toys. I was not expecting to buy up to seven Datsuns in two years!

Weapon: Mace
That Megs look underwhelming. Huge arms panels and obvious partsforming, only to get the same old, same old. #-o

If I didn't have Siege Megatron, I'd get this Megatron. Shame that it's just a retool and not a unique mold, unless they're gonna pull a Galaxy Upgrade Megatron out of their hat.
