Well Shockwave is the awesome and I just wanted to share a slight variation of the "wing" configuration.

His fully combined alt mode reminded me of those old 8/16 bit shooters that featured giant battle ships as the entire stage/boss fight.

You know what I'd like to see for Siege (or rather, the whole trilogy) figures beside the weapons and weaponizers? Armor. Specifically armor meant to use the 5mm ports, Think of it like segmented panels with hardpoints and/or painted battle damage that you can pop off and go 'Rragh! My armor! Noooooo!"

You kind of get that with the Weaponizers and Soundwave's minions. Of course those are more shields than armor but armor would have to be too individual and is not practical to go with every size class from Deluxe upwards.
But I'd like to see more shields and melee weapons. I hoped Skytread would turn out to be a Weaponizer whose wings would form melee weapons but as we know now he's only a duocon.

I think grey armor made of flexible panels could work, especially if stuck on arms and legs. If I knew how to 3d model I'd try to see if there's a market for more 3d printed accessories for Transformers that aren't just guns.

Really surprised by the lack of enthusiasm for Galaxy Convoy. I love how this thing looks! I'm excited for him!

As for the new Commander class that looks to be coming, You watch, it's gonna be a Jetfire that can combine with the Voyager Prime ALA Armada and the movies, probably closer to the movies. And if that happens, I'll need to go find the voyager Prime so I can have a trifecta of Jetfire-powered up primes

I wasn't going to get most of the Siege figures due to being drained of money thanks to Titans Return but I am going to get that Leader Prime at some point, he was the first Optimus Prime I knew so he means a lot to me. (Cybertron is my nostalgia, it's my G1, many figures from that line are part of my "chugverse" just because many of them do fit with the classic style figures.)

I think the issue is this: unlike all other big 'G1 with knees' releases, his figure is objectively inferior to the original in just about every way. Not only that but it has a level of partsforming and fake parts generally completely unseen in the recent Generations toyline, which make him look horribly cheap and compromised. Then there's the fact they chickened out and made his base robot form flat out G1 Optimus, making him a G1 Optimus cosplaying as Galaxy Convoy.

He's simply too flawed by the standards of what we've seen in Generations since T30. While I don't think he's an iredeemably bad figure, it's clear that he's one of the most half-assed retools in a long time. They couldn't decide if they wanted an Ultra Magnus retooled into something vaguely inspired by Galaxy Convoy (the base robot mode) or a flat out remake, like the T30 Armada toys. The end result is a toy that just doesn't do very well what it's supposed to accomplish.

I mean, he has enough 5mm holes on his legs to attach stuff too, nothing on the chest, but you could attach something to his back and wrap it around his body :-?

I'm real excited for it, but also I haven't already bought Magnus, I'm not a G1-focused collector, and Cybertron Prime/Galaxy Convoy was one of the figures I really wanted when I was younger and never got ahold of, so this fulfills that old interest as well. The only things I dislike about this figure at all is the hollowness of his big old Gauss Cannons and the fact that the wheels on the wings aren't at least colored on both sides, but those aren't figure-ruining in the slightest.

Skritz wrote:...it has a level of partsforming and fake parts generally completely unseen in the recent Generations toyline...

From my experience, most if not all the well-executed super modes I can think of rely on partsforming to some extent, so it doesn't bother me that much, and the front wheels coming off means he avoids the big chunk of butt armor Magnus has and gets some Armada-ish (emphasis on ish) arm guns. As for the wing wheels, I do wish they were real or at least painted on both sides, but that isn't that problematic.

Overall, this whole thing reminds me of the conversations surrounding PotP OpOp: those who already have the original figure say he's not worth it because this one isn't as good, and those who like it are a mix of people who can't get ahold of the original and/or people who are tired of ceaseless G1 updates.

We really should move this conversation over here.

I'm still leaning towards a character like Thunderclash since he's a figure they could do a lot with. The important part would be the trailer, just pack it full of features like the tower mode of the original and possibly a dual homage to this beauty:

Image

Alternately Star Saber is a pretty strong contender with his two bot modes, two alt modes and a Brain of Courage in the form of a Titan Master.

And incidentally, both characters are classified as commanders. Star Saber is "Supreme Commander" and Thunderclash is "Commander-in-Chief".

If we're honest, the likely case is Thunderclash from Ultra Magnus/Galaxy Convoy. The trailer partsforming really helps them out in terms of base modes and robot mode. I'd love Star Saber to get an update outside of the MP line, but I doubt it'll be in Siege. Also, I know it's technically inaccurate to everything, but I'd love a Star Saber retooled to Thunderwing. Then again, Hasbro did say that they planned out figures (or made concept art, not sure how far they made it) for each potential Prime from PotP, so maybe they've modified the Star Saber design to be for Siege

Just boots and a backpack, all of which are actual parts of the alt mode. The new figure requires additional parts, many of which are "fake" like the wheels and chest windows. It's just not a very satisfying remake and a massive step down from the original for me. The completionist in me will probably end up buying one, but it's no substitute for the original that I already have.

Siege Ultra Magnus' shoulder pauldrons and forearm bracers aren't actual parts of his alt mode either. They're just stuffed inside the trailer, out of sight. It just goes with the territory of the Siege Leader class, or at least anything stemming from this UM base mold. Consider this, though. Only the shoulder pauldrons of Siege Leader Optimus Prime are fake pieces, as the fake wheels are just sculpted into the wings and not separate pieces. The parts forming wheels for the front cab are a legitimate part of the alt mode. Leader Optimus Prime actually has fewer partsforming pieces that aren't truly integrated into the alt mode than Ultra Magnus!

This Siege Leader Optimus Prime mold exists not to replace the Cybertron figure in anyone's collection, but to get reuse from the Ultra Magnus mold with some retooling to give us an homage to an Optimus Prime design that ISN'T from G1 for a change of pace. It's the same as Power of the Primes Optimal Optimus. It's meant to homage the original Beast Wars figure, not necessarily replace it. It's main reason for existing is as a way for Hasbro to give us a figure that evolves Optimus Primal, the winner of a fan vote, into a new bearer of the Matrix of Leadership. Still not convinced? How about Thrilling 30 Armada Starscream? He wasn't meant to replace the original Armada toy. The T30 version is much smaller and out of scale with the original Armada toys, doesn't come with a minicon, and has inferior accessories and action features. No one was upset to have it, though. It was just a fun homage that fans ultimately appreciated for what it was, a nod to a non-G1 part of Transformers history.

The big difference between Leader Prime and Ultra Magnus is that the armor on Magnus is just that, armor. They don't look like recognizable car parts, they look like snap on armor, and the parts that do look like car parts are functional on the alt mode. That's considerably different from Prime having fake truck cabs on his shoulders, fake truck windows on his chest (they were side windows on the original figure alt mode), and fake wheels on his wings that actually functioned on the original and would have probably been better left off. I get trying to give us an update on an old design or a second use for a new mold, but I feel this was a very poorly conceived execution. There are many other incarnations of Prime they could have done that wouldn't have needed nearly as many fake parts. Why not RID Fire Optimus Prime, they wouldn't have needed any fake parts for that? Better yet, why not something new for a change? They had options and went with possibly the worst one just so they could appease fans that call them out for being too "Geewun". I'm just not satisfied with this figure, there are too many compromises being made.
