Ultra Magnus = Optimus Prime? WTH?
I've seen a few posts saying that the Nightwatch Prime can be bought and called Ultra Magnus. My brother also told me that there was a MP Ultra Magnus that was just a repaint of MP Optimus Prime.
I haven't gotten back to Transformers till the movie, so I may be WAY out of date. But what I remember is: Ultra Magnus looks completely different from Prime! He is a Car Carrier.
If I remember the G1 toy right (and I really don't want to go through my storeroom just to look for him through the mess) there was a Prime Roller that was a whitish Prime repaint; however this wasn't Ultra Magnus until he was combined with his trailer and an outer helmet placed over the repaint's head.
So I'm wondering what is the real deal:
1. Is Ultra Magnus still a car carrier in modern times?
2. Is the small 'inner robot' Ultra Magnus, or is he a placeholder to hold everything together? In other words, is Ultra Magnus Ultra Magnus only when everything combines to form the 1986 Movie look, or is the 'inner robot' part Ultra Magnus?
3. Either way, shouldn't the head of Ultra Magnus look like Ultra Magnus?
Confused,

Don't feel bad, I jsut realized this today myself. Ultra Magnus is a white version of Optimus Prime, usually seens wearing his care carrier as armor.

Ever since Robot in Disguise Series, Ultra Magnus has been the white clone of Optimus Prime. And when you find an Optimus Prime, you automatically have to have the asumption that Hasbro will repaint it into Ultra Magnus.

Thanks guys. So Ultra Magnus is now the same alt mode as Optimus Prime?
Does this mean that when the toys come out, it will always just be a repaint, and we don't expect any toys that has Ultra Magnus as what he's supposed to be as seen in the movie/ Season 3?
This is just plain crooked

It's kind of logical, as the original toys where the same, just the movie made you feel like you were facing a different 'bot.
I think one of the dreamwave comics started portraying prime ad magnus together as brothers..
oh hell. if you're worried about prime and magnus as brothers.. the movie has prime and megatron as brothers (but no repaits though)

The original toy, as you correctly pointed out, consisted of a white Prime repaint with a trailer that functioned as armour or an exosuit.
But the cartoon that followed never showed him without the armour, and indeed oftentimes seemed to go out of their way to make it look like they were all one component.
When Dreamwave got hold of the franchise, they decided to take a lot of it back to the original toy roots, including using the white Prime (which in their storyline turned out to be his brother) as the basic mode of Magnus, revealed when his armour was destroyed.
Since then, Hasbro have capitalised on this by repainting pretty much every Prime mould they've released in white, and calling it Ultra Magnus.

And thus we hate them for it. Both Hasbro and Dreamwave. Yet like idiotic sheep, so many of us fans still buy that repainted crap instead of demanding a new mold!

we always have and always will.. as soon as we "stop" buying certrain products I'm sure the rest of the product line goes down as well.. the repaints are the moneymakers.. instead of bitching about them, buy them and secure the future of the rest of the toys.

Thats a horrid idea. "lets buy the rehashed garbage so they keep making more!" When things don't sell, companies notice and rethink things.

If we didn't buy the repaints etc. we would simply had a lot less toys, it would be the end of the masterpiece line, takara could afford making one unique mold (megatron) but I doubt the MP line would have any future if mp2, mp4 and mp6 were all unique models.
likewise with alt/binaltech.. it just costs too much and when a new model flops (skids) it really hurts them.
I just like "choice".. it might hurt as a collector (buying the same toy five times) I'm glad we're long past the time of Henry Ford and such short-sightedness.

I have question wouldn't ultra magnus just be magnus without his car carrier armor. Because doesn't his car carrier armor make him ultra magnus.

No...RiD Ultra Magnus had a whole other non-repainted toy.

True. I'm surprised no one mentioned Titanium G1 Ultra Magnus, either.

Yeah Shortround, I'm calling him Magnus too if he doesn't come with the armor.
I actually never had problem with UMagnus being a repaint of Prime as his original G1 toy and box art did advertise the white robot cab mode. Also in 1987, the UMagnus Jr was also released just the robot cab (with a paper trailer). So, I'm used to it as UMagnus fan. Although I occasionally would prefer a separate mold from Prime.

Wow thanks for all the replies guy! Mine eyes are open... to yet more crookery. Who knew years ago when I bought He-Man and Faker for SGD$6.50 each that they'd be doing the same things twenty years later... only now it's with toys worth SGD$120 and up... and just like then, we're still buying both!

Well you don't speak for all Ultra Magnus fans personally I liked the idea that the Magnus we saw was in battle armor. Gives him something more unique and it was cool to see how it played out in the Dreamwave comics.
I just wish we could get a toy to represent the gimick, I too am sick of the simple Ultra Magnus repaints even though I own the old Universe one and the Classics one, they are cool toys.

Ultra Magnus is Ultra Magnus regardless of whether he is in his armor or not. It's just his name. As has been mentioned, the original G1 Ultra Magnus toy was a white twin of Prime with a suit of battle armor which formed his car carrier. This was taken from the Diaclone "Powered Convoy" mold. This was first shown in comics be Dreamwave. In particular, War and Peace. But even before that, there was nothing conclusive saying that he was not wearing armor. The cartoons and old Marvel comics simply never showed him without it. The Titanium G1 Ultra Magnus was designed as one piece, but Don Figueroa figured out how to disconnect the cab, and that the THS Magnus can fit inside the space by it. Thus, once again, you can hav ethe armored and unarmorde robot modes like the original G1 toy.
The Classocs Ultra Magnus that came in the two-pack was a great figure, though It would ahve been better if it were sold on its own with a trailer. I rectified that by building my own.
There is nothing crooked about Magnus being a white repaint of the Prime mold. That is what he always was from the beginning. He just has really cool powered Command armor to wear.

I saw that for Classics 2.0 there will be a new Ultra Magnus sculpt. If that is true what do you all think think the chances of his being a two part figure with separable trailer armor is? He'd probably be expensive if he was, but dang he'd be sweet.

I hope so, but I don't know. Hasbro might cater to the "white Prime haters" and make him a single piece unique sculpt like RID Ultra Magnus. I can't say for sure.

Anyway, I would always prefer a two part figure since it gives more playing value.
