I paid 99 cents a pound for two bunches of red bananas, and the stupid things aren't even ripe, its been a week! They have that greenish color to them still, and when I tried to peel one, the peel came off in little pieces and the banana had a crispy crunch like a vegetable!

Maybe I need to stick them in a paper bag with an apple to 'entice' them to ripen. I tried to ask the produce guy at the supermarket about what to do, and he said "You have to wait, give them time."

Good grief, how long do these things need? :evil:

I thought plantains were brown in color. They are quite tasty fried.

Try frying one to see what you get. If it's sweet and tasty after being cooked then it's a plantain.

No, they aren't plantains, as I know what they look like green or brown. (You are right, they are quite tasty when fried

But these aren't those type, and it doesn't seem like they are turning.

The wikipedia article says red bananas take only a couple days at room temperature to ripen. Perhaps you got some dumb bananas that don't know how to ripen?

I can't figure out why they aren't ripening. They should have done so already.

Two things:

Stick them in a brown paper bag with an apple. Apples release the most...is it ethylene? That chemical that ripens fruit and stuff. (Hey, it's early!)

Two: Refrigerator. Sure, the old CHiquita banana song told us to never never never put a banana...in the refrigerator, oh no no no. But if you're trying to ripen super quick, like for banana bread, it works like a charm. They won't be pretty (turn brown on the skin) but inside, tasty!

HK, banana expert. Wait: that sounds like a double-entendre.
