Maybe this has been mentioned before, but I just noticed this now.

Why does everyone (Optimus included) have an escape pod type alternate form as their Cybertronian form, but Megatron is a starship??

I know of course, this can only be answered AFTER the movie is out, but there have been multiple script leaks.

Does anyone have any theories??

It's their entry mode to break through atmospheres. That's as far as I know, not their normal Alt mode on Cybertron. Actually they very well might not have an Alt mode on Cybertron but create one so they can enter the atmosphere.

its just their regular Cybertronian mode....not a special break through earths atmosphere alt...opti was a truck type thing on his planet so thats why he looks like a space truck when he hits earth...starscream looks like a seeker with his alt mode...so go figure....poof

Welll...the movie version of Transformer make me think of a theory!

Seibertronian dont build ship to fight war...they ARe the ship! But, since Megatron is a power-hungry maniac, it make sense that he is somekind of Super-Ship!

I was thinking bout that last night. Well they said he was a top "secret" jet in his earth mode. Maybe thats a real jet becuase if you ask me that could be a real jet. So that is probably his earth mode.

trust me. there is no way that it is actually physically possible to make a real life jet out of meg's alt mode.

and that "top secret" jet thing was debunked as a lie.

well they didnt, if you read the script or talked to anyone that has...you would know megs has had that form since he was stuck in the ice...i dont even think he takes an alt earth form at all being that he un-freezes in the last 10-15 mins or so...after he wakes its all chase and fireballs....no need to be in an earth alt at all...the army already knows who and what he is....poof

Yes, please, no matter what happens let us not cause the TF movie section of the forums to fall back into chaotic debates that only bash each other's opinions.

I, personally, believe that the "comet" modes are entry modes and not Cybertronian modes and that Megs is frozen for most of the first movie and then when he gets out he is in his Cybertronian form, but that is my opinion and others are allowed to have their owns. Either way, we will all truly find out the facts when the movie is on the screen in front of us.

and engineering would tell you the complete opposite. It wouldnt just be a modification to the black bird, it would be taking the design astethic to building jets and throwing it out the window. because there is nothing practical that can be done to turn movie megatron's alt mode into a "modification of the blackbird jet."

If it were even close enough to the blackbird, then it wouldn't just be a modification. You'd literally have to add so much additional stuff to the exterior of the plane that it just isn't practical, and with the additional weight, it probably wouldn't fly either.
