I find it odd that so many have decided to go with MMC over this one. Looking back at the history of the two 3rd party Devastators (Hercules and Giant), everyone who wanted Giant over Hercules (which seemed like most) claimed it was because it was more 'G1 accurate', yet now here we have 2 Predakings, one of which is a massive departure from G1 (MMC) and one which looks much closer to G1 (War Lord), yet everyone is going for MMC.

I just don't understand what's changed. Maybe it has to do with the less significant price difference between the 2 Predakings vs the price difference between the 2 Devastators or maybe it has to do with the fact that MMC is a more well known company and at the time, many claimed (incorrectly) that Giant was made by someone affiliated with FansProject.

Maybe I'm stirring the pot here, but I can't help but wonder about the reasoning in all of this. Fans seem very fickle to be certain.

I'm sticking with the reasoning behind getting Herc for getting MMC. It is not about price. I want the one I like better, which in this case is MMC. I like it because it's so different from G1, not because it looks more similar to it (because as I said, it doesn't, the War Lord version is much more 'G1').

Personally I like Hercules over Giant, as far as looks go. I own neither, but if I were to get one, it'd be Herc. As a 90s kid, I don't care much for slavish G1 accuracy, I care about what looks coolest. Herc and Feral Rex win in that regard.

In individual bot modes the Herc bots are actually more G1 accurate. (G1 cartoon accurate that is) It always gets so confusing around here when someone says "more G1" do they mean G1 cartoon accuracy or G1 toy accuracy ? I always speak cartoon accuracy when I say G1. Thats why I chose Hercules (with CrazyDevy add ons of course) The only reason Im getting Giant is because he is G2 yellow.

My head was in bits when herc and giant came out all the endless banter about who's best for g1 looks ,size ,price and whatever to the point i got neither a year or so later with a fresh look i just got my first part of herc i just love the size and over all look and same with predaking i thought feck the bullshit this time and for the same reasons as herc i chose mmc feral rex

I do like G1 accuracy, but depending on the character that can be G1 toon, toy or comic interpretations. Some characters benefit from not being so slavish to the original designs. With the Devys, I still find that Giant looks more accurate to me, in my idea of what the Constructicons and Devastator looked like, plus it's half the price and I really like the vehicle modes. I agree that Hercules looked much more cartoony, but that wasn't a big selling point for me. Loads of options, especially with the add-ons make it much more appealing, but not for the prices involved.

With these Predacons the MMC ones aren't much more expensive, and look like much more fun toys than the other ones...I can't even remember the name of the guys making them. Also, really love the sword for War Lordwhatever MMCs is called. Would still like some more pics of both sets, in colour, and a better idea of when they'll all be out, but...it's 3rd parties.

Yes, I am forced to agree to this. For half the price I might have been persuaded to go this route instead of MMC.

When I asked about FP's connection to MT at TFCon, the FP Core rep said there was none whicle laughing and making it pretty clear that there was, but he couldn't really say it officially.

Anyhow, I think there's a lot of factors here. The chief among them being that MMC already has an established reputation, has the more intricite robots, AND is larger on top of all that.

Herc and Giant are almist contrasting figures. Gerc is large, simple, and more expencive (for most). Giant is smaller, but it more detailed. There's a lot of back-and-forther over who'se "more G1".

But here, MMC's take is larger AND more intricate. I feel UT's take is worth the price, but it's much more clearly the inferior take.

Looks like these figures are not only over-priced but really poorly executed. Since this is a big, multi-figure set (too ambitious for a new 3P if you ask me), they needed take their time with this even with pressure coming from MMC. Rushing these to market has probably doomed this release.

UT had promise but it looks like their War Lord set may be DOA.

I think this is a really great and interesting question.

The fandom was really divided on the Herc/Giant debate, but seems pretty unified on this one.

I will say, the latest pics look like there has been improvement in War Lord, but I'll try to answer you question from my perspective.

First, I'll disagree that MMCs is the larger departure. Predaking had a couple points in G1 that really stuck with me. First, his overall size. While the other combiners were smaller than the common cars of the era, Predaking was made up of Dinobot sized figs, so he was BIG.

Also, all 5 bots were the same size, as opposed to the scramble city guys that had a "commander" and 4 limbs. This gave him a bulky, squat appearance ... perfect for the combined form of a beast!

IMO MMC's design nails this on both counts. He is BIG. He'll be bigger than Giant by a decent margin, and should be bigger than Herc as well. Also, from the renders at least, he retains that squat body design, which for me captures Predaking.

The Beasticons are on par with Giant as far as size ... maybe smaller, and the overall design makes for a leaner bot, that has more in common with the scramble city guys. Add in the shoulder guns and over-long hand spikes, and I'd argue that this is the further departure.

Price is also a factor. MMC is only slightly more expensive, and you are getting a lot more plastic for your buck. This is probably because MMC has been around a while and, I'm guessing, has the business end of the operation set up already.

No, like I said, I think it is an interesting question.

I'm also getting MMC's offering for the same reasons I got Herc. Size + design. I perfer larger sized combiners, and as long as those don't disappoint on design, I'm a happy camper. But I don't see it as a departure from G1. While I'm not slavish to G1, as I mentioned above, to me, MMC IS the more geewunny offering.

Look back at the early image of a War Hawk prototype combined with a War Leo prototype:

http://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-p ... 2827_n.jpg

Does it look like there might not be much forward-to-backward (or sideways) movement on the hip joints? I've actually been leaning towards UT (I should be getting War Hawk tomorrow so I can see how it feels in hand), but if the combined form can't move its upper legs at all, that'll kill this for me, and I'll probably have to go with MMC.

At the top of page 11 there is a pic of this guy where you can see hip joints pretty clearly. Safe to say he has at least 45 degree forward movement in his hips, maybe more.

Ah, yes, I see what you're saying. I'm still finding myself torn anyway, though. Even if the hips do have a more decent range of motion, I must admit I'm not really liking the look of them. They seem... awkward.

I have War Hawk in hand now and it is a surprisingly likable figure in person. I like its look and it feels decently durable, though the having to attach and remove the wings is a bit scary. I do feel UT as a company has potential if they survive this initial Predaking run. All the same, as I said above, I'm still not feeling 100% ready to commit to UT. (I don't feel like buying two 3rd party Predakings.) I guess I'll have to monitor future developments.
